Gellar Hesitates Over 'Buffy' Movie

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) -- Although she has some hesitation about bringing her vampire slaying Buffy character to the big screen, Sarah Michelle Gellar says she hasn't completely ruled out the idea.

After playing "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" on the cult hit TV series for seven years, she tells Zap2it.com that making a movie of the series may disappoint fans.

"Clearly, you're going to disappoint people. I mean, I was very happy with the finale, but I still believe that it should have been two hours," Gellar says. "I believe there wasn't enough Xander. I believe that certain things get left out, and when you make a film you're setting yourself up to disappoint people."

Gellar, who is in the upcoming horror film "The Grudge," adds, "Part of the reason I believe that the show worked was because the story had arcs and you felt for this character and you experienced things [with her], and it wasn't a beginning, middle and end."

There already was a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie released in 1992 starring Luke Perry (TV's "Beverly Hills, 90210") and Kristy Swanson ("Dude Where's My Car?") That pre-dated the series and it's part of the reason Gellar is wary of making a follow-up film.

"I spent the first year of the show constantly explaining to people, 'No no, it's not like the movie; it's not like the movie,' because there was such a bias to the movie, because it didn't work as a film," she says.

Yet, the 27-year-old actress says she's not giving a definite no at this stage. "I say that now, and a year someone could send me the script and I could think it's great and we could be at the junket a-year-and-a-half from now. But I will say that I have a lot of hesitations about it and it is not something I particularly want to do at this time."

However, bidding goodbye to her beloved Buffy character was a tough time for Gellar. "[It was] the most difficult thing i've ever experienced. It was all I knew. I started that show when I was 18 years old. It was a character I loved," she says. "[The crew] were people I saw nine months a year for eight years of my life it was incredibly difficult."

The TV series created by Joss Wheadon ("Angel") appeared on TV screens from 1997 to 2003 and also starred Alyson Hannigan ("American Pie") and Nicholas Brendon ("Psycho Beach Party.")

I think that's a roundabout way of saying she'll do it if her current slate of projects don't amount to anything.

When that rumour floated around that she was doing the big screen version of Sabrina The Teenage Witch my mouth dropped open in disbelief. She was willing to do that instead of a Buffy movie? When she hardly even passes for a teenager anymore?

I'm assuming it was a rumour.

In any case, she probably wants to leave the character behind. I can hardly blame her. Seven years of your life is a long time.

Personally, I'd rather see the mythology the show created be explored in another television series, as opposed to waiting several years for each big screen story to come my way.

I'm torn about this. I'm a big fan of the show, but I think she has a point. The show was so character driven that it may not translate well to an all-action extravaganza type film

Yep, they should give us Ripper (the show that was to focus on Giles and be a co-production with the BBC) rather than a movie

Gellar can't act worth shit and she's getting old. Do a Buffy movie now while the characters are still fresh.

She's not even 30 yet. Getting old? Explain what you mean.

I still fail to see your reasoning? She's in her twenties and the character would now be in her twenties. It's not like we're talking about a movie where she would still be at high school. When the show ended Buffy would have been about twenty-two or so anyway. I'm assuming that if they made a movie a few years would have passed after the big finale. Anyway...I hope this happens at some point. I want to see a big budget Buffy I movie. I have faith in all involved to produce the goods.

A buffy movie MAY be in the post apoacolyptic world. The sixth season of Angel would have been set this way as well, b/c the battle in the final episode would ultimately have made mince meat of the planet.

So, if it did happen, we can expect a much bigger scale to the porject.
