Jon Stewart torches
'Crossfire' hosts

BY HELEN KENNEDY
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON - It wasn't meant to be funny, but Jon Stewart of "The Daily Show" got in a dustup with his "Crossfire" hosts yesterday that left viewers laughing.
Stewart, who is promoting a new political-humor book, surprised the talk show mavens by being deadly serious.

He went after "Crossfire" hosts Tucker Carlson and Paul Begala for turning politics into cartoonish conflict instead of illuminating issues.

"What you do is not honest. What you do is partisan hackery," Stewart said.

"I'm here to confront you. ... You have a responsibility to the public discourse, and you fail miserably. ... It's hurting America," he said.

Carlson, clearly angry, replied, "Jon, I'm sorry. I think you're a good comedian. I think your lectures are boring."

He called Stewart John Kerry's "butt boy" for lobbing softball questions at the candidate on "The Daily Show."

"I thought you were going to be funny. Be funny," he told Stewart.

"I'm not going to be your monkey," Stewart replied.

After a commercial break, the sparring resumed.

Carlson: "You're more fun on your show."

Stewart: "You're as big a d--- on your show as you are on any show."

As the credits rolled, Stewart said sarcastically, "Well, that went well."

John Stewart is too much of a liberal for my tastes, but this is just classic! He really rips Carlson a new a-hole. A truly bizarre episode in the annals of television

Just finished watching the whole thing, and really, Tucker is one huge-bow-tied penis. Must be bitter because of the lack of Emmies on his mantle.

Jon Stewart entered my pantheon of Gods a little while ago. I think he's well on his way to become God of Gods now. ;)

The man is funny. No doubt about it. I'm glad he railed on them. It gets old listening to partisans bark like dogs.

I agree with what Stewart says about their show. It is true. But resorting to calling him a dick? Come on, what are we in elementary school?

I think I'd also call someone a dick if I kept being cut off for commercials.

The loser deserved to be called a dick.

He kept telling Stewart to "be funny"

Stewart told him..I aint your monkey

The bow tie freak kept telling him you arent funny like on your show..say something funny..he was deliberately trying to get Stewarts goat..he's lucky all Jon did was call him a dick and not punch him in his face.

Crossfire is a suck ass show and Stewart put them in their place....good for him.

Stewart: How old are you?

Tucker: Im 35

Stewart: ..and you're wearing a BOW TIE?

CLASSIC...

I loved his response on The Daily Show last night
(speaking of a Sunday conversation) "tomorrow, I'll go on my show and be funny, you'll still be on this show" or something to that effect...funny stuff

I almost agreed with Jon but he drifted from his point half way through and resorted to name calling in return.

And I think the question about his Kerry interview was completely valid, if Jon had Bush on the show do you really think he would ask questions as light as the ones he asked Kerry? Probably not, I have a feeling he would get pretty serious on his ass, but the ultimate defense for his show is that "we are comedy" and no one watches it for real coverage. Bullshit. People, especially the younger voters, are inspired by The Daily Show as well. He has responsibilities too.

I would agree with that. He sure would get more serious if the "other guy" was on his show. But he did try and call out Crossfire with some valid reasons and at least its an enjoyable watch.

Carlson: "You should teach a class at a journalism school."

Stewart: "You should go to one."

ZZZZZZZING! Carlson got served! :D

Admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of Jon Stewart or The Daily Show. I think he's extremely overrated. But I gotta say, that interview was pretty funny. He really did rip Carlson a new one.
