This DVD will be worth buying for those Mike Epps outtakes alone.

If the footage in the film is him being funny can you imagine how toe curlingly bad the cut scenes must be.;)

RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE

Director: Alexander Witt
Actors: Milla Jovovich (Alice)
Sienna Guillory (Jill Valentine)
Oded Fehr (Carlos Olivera)
Omar Epps (L.J.)

Rating: 5/10

Plot: Taking place right after the events of the first movie this film highlights what's going down in Raccoon City (finally something from the video game!), a city right above the Hive from the first movie where the breakout began. Alice (Jovovich) the hero of the first, who now feels "unlike her self" is quarantined in the town with a cop Jill Valentine (Guillory), a reporter, some other pieces of crap we don't care about along with lot's of flesh eating zombies. Equipped with guns and lots of kung-fu moves they try to get out of the city alive. WOW THIS SUCKS.

Review: The first Resident Evil film was an enjoyable action/horror chick even if it wasn't too much like the games I adored as a kid and still do. The sequel dips a little more into what the video game was about, as this film includes the awesome Nemesis villian from the 3rd installment in the video game series. Previews for Apocalypse looked like it would be a winner, and worthy follow up to the first film. What ensued was as dissapointing as can be: horrible acting, cheesy dialogue, badly shot action and just about everything else.

The first thing that stood out for me was the fact that the peformances seemed half-assed at times. I loved Alice (Jovovich) in the first and I think she is as naturally beautiful as a female can be, but she really didn't seem to be trying in this film at all. She seems bored and uninterested in what she is saying and doesn't really put out something for me to chew on. She does give us a beautiful full on tit shot though! At times her great performance from the first can be seen here, but for the majority of the movie I really think she could have done a better job with her character. Another beautiful female in the movie Sienna Guillory who plays a Raccoon City S.T.A.R.S officer named Jill Valentine was pretty good. This is the first movie I have seen her in and I dug her a lot. She wasn't given the best lines and I don't blame that on her, but from what she got I think she did very well with it. I liked every moment she was on screen! The character of Carlos Oliveria a soldier working with Umbrella is played by Oded Fehr, and for the most part is okay. At times he was boring but nothing rubbed me the wrong way about him during the film. The characters would have benefieted from a movie that didn't have such boring dialogue. The writing for this movie is just terrible...maybe I wasn't expecting exceptional dialogue out of this movie, but jesus, better than this!

By far the worst actor, and one of the film's biggest flaws is the character of L.J. played by Omar Epps. What were they thinking putting him in this film? Why does everyone movie need a black guy spouting unfunny one-liners at the wrong times? Why? His performance was simply there for comedic relief and I didn't laugh once. The parts I was enjoying were ruined by him saying things like "Nigga my shit is custom!" or something stupid along those lines. Every time I saw him open his mouth I was ready to rip out my hair, kill the person next to me, or cover my ears in order to stop the loss of brain cells that comes with listening to whatever this dumbass says.

The action in the film is consistent but often packed with noticeable flaws and completly unrealistic things. Okay, I know what you are thinking: this is a zombie movie, of course it's not going to be realistic. What I mean is this...there is a scene in which Jill, the reporter, and a few other disposable characters are surrounded by lickers in the church. At that exact moment Alice comes crashing through the very high stained glass ready to save the day. How did she know what was going on inside? Little things like this are sprinkled throughout the movie and really bring it down. Nemesis, the spooky ass villian from the 3rd game is here in full force. I liked his get-up, very loyal to the game and he reeked of awesomeness when he finally got to say "S.T.A.R.ssss!". I liked almost all the scenes he was in bust was annoyed when characters didn't use their damn heads when they are fighting him. Wasting hundreds of bullets firing at Nemesis chest that are just bouncing off in every direction. His chest is coated in some thick armor...why not shoot him in the head!? It makes no sense. Nemesis was a good edition to the movie but for every scene he came on flashbacks were way overused from the first movie and it just became very annoying every time they kept showing the same scene from the first movie over...and over...and over. I'll say it again, I love Nemesis, but my final complaint and the one that had me scratching my head was the fact that...he knew Kung-Fu. Since when does Nemesis know Kung-Fu!?

The action as I said was consistent and at times I really enjoyed it. A sparkling example is the fight in the church (even if I didn't like how a certain someone got in there). I liked the slow motion effect as well as the rest of the scene. A great scene is the "running down the building" scene. I loved the way it was shot and I thought it just rocked overall. I thought it was very stylish and just reeked of coolness! However for every fight scene in the movie (and there are quite a few), there was a MAJOR problem. Shaky camera! God, everytime a fight broke on screen I felt like I need to get something to hold my neck in place because watching these fight scenes will give you whiplash. I was often asking myself "Who's winning this fight anyway?" You're not supposed be asking yourself that during a fight scene in a movie! The fight scenes could have been great had it not been for the horrible camera work. To go with the badly shot fight scenes were horribly shot scares. I don't know if this movie was supposed to be considered horror or not but I can tell you that for not one second of this movie was I scared or for one scene did I jump. I did notices scenes that were meant to scare but they just ended up being laughable.

A final complaint about this film is the fact that it's Rated R. Huh? This movie is by far the dryest zombie movie ever made. There is violence, but no gore. The violence is there becuase you will see a zombie attack someone, but you will only see the aftermath. Gore is watching the zombie eat this man alive and feeling bad for the guy. There was ZIP gore in this movie, zip. Every time a character was killed I couldn't help but sit there and yawn or roll my eyes at the lack of gore or creativity in the deaths in the film. Some good gore would have helped this movie a lot but instead the film pussies out on anything hardcore, and only gives us a shitload of suggested violence. You can't help but wonder: how does a movie that's as gory as an episode of Pokemon get an R rating?

Resident Evil: Apocalypse benefiets from some nice plot twists and some pretty good ending scenes but besides that this sequel is a mess of epic proportions. Sub-par acting, badly shot fight scenes, complete lack of gore for a zombie film, and the horrible black guy just there for comic relief. Resdient Evil: Apocalypse could have great but it just ends up being a painfully average action film that's worth nothing more than a rent. Resident Evil: Apocalypse looked like a worthy follow up to the first but it just has too much going against it for it to be overly enjoyable. I'd say it's a good rent, but it's not something I'm going to come back for a 2nd time, let alone more.

Gore: WHAT!? If you actually read my review you'll know this is one of my big complaints. How is this movie rated R? Full of suggest violence, the only gore there is to speak of (and I'm being generous here) is a knife in the head, a bunch of head shots without blood, and damaged bodies and creatures. Once again...why the R-rating MPAA?

Nudity: YES! Milla Jovovich (who plays Alice) is in my opinion one of the most beautiful girls I've ever seen shows off her beautiful tits. I loved it!

Final Thoughts: Resident Evil: Apocalypse is just an average action movie. Not a horror film, not even a zombie film becuase it lacks scares, gore, and at times zombies. If you're looking for just action, I guess you've found a good movie because it has action but it's missing just about everything else. Shitty dialogue, lame acting, and many other things. Resident Evil: Apocalypse could have been a lot better but there's just way too much wrong with it. A rent at best.
