View Full Version : Do you think...
The Bond films reflect the era that they're being made in? I mean, I find it strange how they maintain their popularity, and I think that must be part of it, that they alter to "work" in the current time period.
If you do agree, is that a good thing? Don't we want that classic Bond style instead of snowboards and CGI?

Bond has obviously moved with the times in order to appeal to different generations of moviegoers.
Unfortunately with the latest installment DAD they targeted an audience with the attention span of a gnat.
Commercially it paid off big time.
Artistically it was a disaster.
In my view if they don't start to stress 007's anachronistic qualities typified in earlier films the series will eventually run out of steam & lose it's appeal as it becomes totally indistinguishable from pap like xXx.
If it hasn't done so already.
But will that be beneficial to the series? I know it's tough to think about this as Bond diehards, but the majority of the moviegoing public will not stand for the anachronisms.
Should the Broccoli's be making movies for us (Bond fanatics) or for the general public?

They need to strike a balance I think.
Enough no-brainer action to appeal to the multiplex crowd but peppered with enough steel for Bond aficionados to also enjoy.
It is a dichotomy though. I know lots of people who enjoyed DAD but not a single one who could be classed as a true 007 fan.
I also think they need to go back to employing house directors as the hire 'em & fire 'em approach just isn't working.
Bring back Martin Campbell. He directed the last good Bond film.

I agree with Ted; the filmmakers and writers need to pander to both the Bond-buffs and the general public that hits the movies every so often. I think the Bond-buffs will enjoy the cool cars and gadgets, the beautiful women, and the James Bond persona. But, every now and again some person who's a workaholic will a day off and decide to see a movie. The filmmakers need to get him into that Bond-buff category.
