Cruise Throws Lousy Pitch, Honored Anyway
October 20, 2004
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - "The Last Samurai" star Tom Cruise was back in the land of the rising sun to promote his latest film, "Collateral."
The 42-year-old actor was first taken out to the ballgame to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Seibu Dome on Tuesday, Oct. 19, reports the AP.
It wasn't the most auspicious start for Game 3 of the Japan Series between Seibu Lions and the Chunichi Dragons, since Cruise's pitch went almost 3 feet wide of the strike zone.
"That was a terrible pitch, but I love being here in Japan," Cruise says. "I feel I have a very special relationship with Japanese audiences."
The following day, the actor became the first foreign actor to leave his handprint to be placed in Tokyo's equivalent of the Hollywood's Walk of Fame.
Cruise made an imprint of his right hand indoors due to the heavy rain, while he gave a thumbs-up to fans. His mark will be placed in the Tokyo square, which honors Japanese actors, on Saturday, Oct. 30.
"Collateral," which co-stars Jamie Foxx, has earned more than $100 million at the domestic box office. Cruise's upcoming projects include the "War of the Worlds" update and "Mission: Impossible 3."
