View Full Version : The crappier the film ... the better the extras

Anyone noticed this trend in DVDs lately.
Truly terrible films like LXG & Van Helsing are given deluxe DVD editions whereas good films like Kill Bill are released virtually extras free.
I was wondering if this studio tactic actually worked.
Are people tempted to buy bad films because the extras are good?

I think when great movies get bare bone releases (like Kill Bill), they just plan on releasing better versions later on because they know they'll sell. Crappy movies like LXG probably have all these features so they can advertise them right away on TV and get some people who haven't seen the movie to blind buy them thinking "it must be a good movie if they have all these extras". I think I've figured it out. Those bastards.

Those pricks at miramax are simply taking their time so they can sell a crappy version first then make a fortune out of a new, more jam packed version sometime in the future.
As for those films you mentioned, they were made after DVDs became really popular and were well known. Of course the Studios are gonna want to have extras done right away so they can sell loaded copies.

I was just thinking about this the other day and i agree 100%.
It does indeed seem like the company tries to validate the movies existance by stacking it fullll of extras to better entice consumers to buy a product they normaly wouldnt touch.
Pearl Harbor anyone? My local Best Buy still has 5 million copies of the uber-deluxe-mega edition of this rotting on thier shelves.

Honestly, I never thought about it but wow... you may be on to something. Just take a look at the 3-disc dvd of Underworld. That movie had some of the worst acting i've seen except by the old dude.

This is a huge scam. I bought the first Shawshank Redemption DVD a couple of years ago, and had shit for extras. Just this year they release this great 2 disc DVD with a little booklet and a soundtrack. Of course I bought it, they'll do that with TONS of DVD's, mark my word...

Yeah, but the Shawshank DVD came out when DVD's were first produced. The studios were releasing movies just to have them on DVD. I'm sure Warner had no master scheme about ripping consumers off five years later with a special edition. I think you can give the studios a break for wanting to release some of these movies again, of course for a profit, because they missed the boat the first time around.

I actually bought this three-disk version (Blind buy, I avoided it in theatres due to the bad reviews) and I rather enjoyed it. I saw what they were trying to do, and the homages that were being paid. True, the best two parts are the first two scenes (Black and white, and Hyde) and that's never good for a film, but I still enjoyed it throughout. It was infinitely better than I thought it would be.
Plus, the 3 disk version has the original Dracula, Frankenstein, and Wolfman. Those aren't exactly easy film to find, not to mention special features and documentaries about them. How can you beat that? It was a bargain if you ask me.

So you buy one shitty movie & they chuck in three good ones as a sweetener?
I must admit even I might be tempted by that offer.
I could watch Frankenstein, Wolfman & Dracula & use the Van Helsing disc as a drinks coaster - hey you gotta find some use for it right. ;)
