View Full Version : Anyone else think Argento`s "Creepers" was kinda lame?

I finally saw this recently (it was the R-rated cut, unfortunatly).
Now, there was some good Argento atmosphere, some good kills, some icky maggots-and-rotting-bodies stuff.....
.....but I had some big problems with it, namely:
1. The whole "selling point" of the movie is that Jennifer Connely`s character can control bugs. Cool idea! Too bad the movie does almost nothing with it! Even the big climatic "bugs-VS-killer" scene was pretty underwhelming.
2. The 80`s heavy-metal music was used in incredibly inappropiate moments sometimes. Like, for example, when she`s trying to get the telephone with the fireplace poker. Now, this is good for unintentional humor......but it`s bad for the serious horror mood most of the movie tries to achieve.
At one point, when the 80`s heavy-metal started up, my freinds and I started adding our own lyrics (kinda like the fake rock songs on "South Park"). Our lyrics went something like, "The power of bugs is IN YOUR HAAAAAAAND!!!!.
And finally.......
3. Ending Spoiler (highlight to read):
The fucking MONKEY saves the day! Isn`t this an Argento movie?!?

I think it would have also helped if you had seen the uncut version under the original title of Phenomena.
And considering Phenomena was my first Argento movie, I really enjoy it a lot.

Oh, I have no doubt I would`ve liked it better if I`d seen the uncut version. From what I understand, the uncut version is about 30 minutes longer! That`s a good chunk of movie.

but as for the american cut known as Creepers, I agree it's kind of lame.

Yeah, I agree Creepers sucked BUT Phenomena was awesome. The US creepers video version is cut to hell and after I watched Phenomena it was like a had watched a different movie.

yeah, R-rated is always bad when an uncut version is out there
I agree with the inapproporiate music like
**SPOILERS**:
when they are carrying out Donald Pleasance's dead body and a Motorhead song is playing..
**SPOILERS**
I still loved the movie and it wasn't so much she could control the bugs, but could communicate with them...

I actually didn't mind the heavy metal music scoring the movie at times. I actually found it unique. Besides, if you listen to the lyrics, it is rather fitting.

**SPOILERS***
"Phenomena" has some stunning set pieces and some great music (and use of music, esp during the sequence when she follows the fly to the house), but the overall idea seems just too fantastical for a film that is not a supernatural story.
The aforementioned 'following' of the fly is in itself rather silly as is her telepathic communication.
It all comes across as just too damn whimsical.
And although the vengeful Chimp was fun, again the idea of this Chimp (no matter how well trained) tracking down and then following the killer to leap at just the right time was again an act coated with too much fantastical whimsy.
Connelly's character was also rather unpleasent at times, coming across like a rather spoilt brat at times.
Still a very good Argento though.

Phenomena is one of my favorite Argentos, but I understand that it can't fit everyone's bill since it's also one of his weirdest movies. I, for one like the soundtrack, it's definitely Goblin's next best work after Suspiria.
And the 80's hair metal.... well, I understand that if you're not into this music ( but I don't think that neither IRON MAIDEN nor MOTÖRHEAD represent that frightening genre that much, to be honest) you'll find the songs bewildering. Still, they're here for a reason - if you read the lyrics of Maiden's "Flash of the Blade" (which is the only song that appears constantly throughout) there's a lot of coinsidence between the words and the killer.
("As a young boy chasing dragons...ect.")
Damm this thread makes me think that I've got a different cut - the song by Motörhead is not there in the scene you talked about. As for the monkey thing - this is Argento. It's his vision. It's his idea. And I think it's a rather original aspect, can't believe that this has been done before or after in any movie that was not aimed at children.
Phenomena is a no-question 10/10 for me.

I liked Phenomena quite a bit. Although, I didn't see the chopped up Creepers. I never really gave the music thing much thought till now and the ending didn't bother me and I liked how she could communicate with the insects and I never really thought she needed to do anything more with them.
