Soavi is really a good director but unfortunately he's too rare.

I think now he works for the italians channels (Rai 1 or 2 or something like that)

The Church is certainly a weird movie but I really like the atmosphere that Soavi creates.
You have this same atmosphere in The Sect (aka La Setta) and it really works well to me.
Simon Boswell's music is effective but not only his music. I mean you have a good soundtrack, too.
The Church really begins in the last 30 minutes in fact, it is really slow but I was not bored 'cause of this atmosphere.
I suppose there was some german money involved in The Sect and The Church because the two settings are in this country.

The gore level is low but that was not important in this case.

I've only seen "Dellamorte Dellamore" and "The Church," both of which I found fascinating. I have the latter on DVD and pop it in on a fairly regular basis. The camera really exploits the Gothic setting to its fullest, and I'm always a sucker for the theme of struggling against Catholic oppression. Soavi is a very artsy type. Sometimes it's quite powerful; even when it's not, it's entertaining.
