Well Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish has done it again critizing Bush

OTTAWA (CP) - The prime minister is condemning anti-U.S. comments by outspoken Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish, and the Opposition leader is calling for her head.

But Parrish says she stands by what she said and has no regrets. Parrish told The Canadian Press on Wednesday that U.S. President George W. Bush is "war-like," and his re-election shows Americans are "out of step" with the rest of the world. On Thursday, Paul Martin dismissed her comments as "clearly unacceptable."

"She speaks neither for the government, nor does she speak for the caucus," he said after a cabinet meeting.

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper asked Martin to kick Parrish out of the Liberal caucus. He said Martin is sending out mixed signals by condemning the comments while refusing to punish errant MPs.

Martin fired back, noting that Tory MPs have criticized the Charter of Rights, bilingualism and Canadian values.

Later Thursday, Parrish issued a statement saying any comments she makes, "are in the best traditions of free speech and independence of thought."

She said she doesn't seek approval from her leader or her party and noted "with some delight" that as her comments "become more moderate, the Opposition's responses become increasingly rabid."

Foreign Minister Pierre Pettigrew brushed off Parrish's anti-Bush remarks, saying he prefers to focus on the good relations Canada has with the U.S.

He noted that U.S. senators and congressmen are often critical of Canada, but the prime minister knows they don't speak for the White House.

Parrish's comments Wednesday came just hours after Martin warned his MPs in a private caucus meeting not to make incendiary comments in the wake of the U.S. election.

Parrish said Thursday that she wasn't at the meeting and even had she been, it wouldn't have stopped her from speaking her mind.

Earlier this fall, Parrish publicly expressed her disdain for what she called the "coalition of the idiots" who back the U.S. missile defence plan.

Last year, she referred to the Bush administration as American "bastards."

Michael Kergin, Canada's ambassador to Washington, briefed cabinet on Canada-U.S. relations Thursday.

Kergin said he expects the process to settle trade irritants will begin anew now that the election is out of the way. But he gave no indication that he expects any quick action on such files as mad cow and softwood lumber.

I'm still wondering why she still has a seat in the House Of Commons. Wether the Canadian governent likes Bush or not you can't have MPs saying shit like this.

And we should respect the rest of the world...why? After some of the comments dished out, I have to wonder why I should have any repect for the people who made them at all (all liberals, I might add). This is a new low for extremist partisans everywhere. As an elected official, she should be ashamed of herself. The decision of so many to keep Bush in office being heralded as "stupid, idiotic, moronic, out-of-step, etc." only shows me that we have no business working with any nation on this planet. It's rude, bitter, disrespectful and insulting. If that's the way the rest of the world thinks, then I'm more satisfied than ever with this election.

It's cool. It just seems like Canada is getting a lot of attention lately. A lot of it negative. What with some Democrats saying they're moving to Canada, and now this stupid, idiot woman's remarks. I really wish Paul Martin would kick her ass out of the Liberal party, the last thing we need right now is for the U.S./Canada relationship to deteroriate.

Parrish is absolutely spot-on, and I admire her for doing that. We shouldn't do anything to censor her, let her speak is all I say. This is CANADA not the UNITED STATES. Since when did it become mandatory for the rest of the world to wave a big, gigantic American flag? Isn't it fair to be honest?

I don't give a flying shit if Canada/U.S relations deteroriate. I'd rather be in a Canada that stands by its peacekeeping values, than a Canada that is likely to get attacked for being allies with the U.S. It's because of Bush's pure idiocy that U.S allies are getting all these terror threats. And you know why I'm saying this? Becuase Parrish is a Canadian, not an American. Saying a Liberal MP should step down for bashing a country that she doesn't live in is purely idiotic.

That's what I hate about America. It's their "you're with us or against us" policy on the rest of the world that I truly despise. Message to America: stop policing us, and stop forcing us to choose.

America is policing Canada in terms of what options it'll make. If Canada says "no, we can't do this, it's wrong", America makes a big stink about it and stomps its muddy boots all over Canada's carpet. Isn't it ironic that when the U.S closed its borders to Canadian beef as a result of Mad Cow was the very same year Canada opted out of joining the U.S in the war in Iraq? (2003).

Parrish told The Canadian Press on Wednesday that U.S. President George W. Bush is "war-like," and his re-election shows Americans are "out of step" with the rest of the world.

While she is only speaking what many Canadians like myself are thinking, as an elected official she should really learn to bite her tongue.

I didn't even think this particular comment was as bad as some of the previous ones she's made. It's not hard to see that the US is in fact a bit 'out of step', taking their government in one direction while the rest of the western world goes in another.

She can have whichever opinion she chooses, but I think that as an MP a little bit of professionalism is in order. It's her JOB to be diplomatic, and if she doesn't realize this, Uncle Martin should shit can her ass.

I don't blame Parrish for saying what she did. In my opinion, she couldn't have been more right. The last time I checked Canadians were our allies and in my book friends critiquing friends is a good thing. We need more of the world to do this instead of not saying how they truly feel.

I agree completely with this post. Her opinions are hers to have, but she lacks any sense in making such rude remarks to an ally. There's a right way to critique a friend and there's a wrong way. And it shows what a lack of concern for fellow nations this woman has when she spouts off mindlessly.

Well, this is what happens when you have (Canadian) Liberals running the country. You American guys think your politicians are bad, try living up here being taxed to death and having morons running the country.

I support Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish right to have the freedom to express her opinions.

Does anyone else see a slight double standard in this whole "express your opinions free speech" subject. I see this a lot. If someone speaks out against this administration or personally attacks Bush, I get the reaction that "im glad they said it! They are just exercising free speech! Let them express there opinions!' When Bush says something to the effect of "you're with us or against us" suddenly he's pissing off the whole entire world and inciting anti-americanism and should immediately should apologize. sheesh

Bah, it's the Liberals. No one pays attention to them in Canada, even when they scammed taxpayers out of millions on sponsorships. I'm only glad they don't have a majority government.
