I watched the first Basket Case just over a week ago I would say. I didn't like it all that much, the beginning was alright and it had it's moments. The acting sucked, and I never complain about acting... but it actually bothered me here. Revealing Belial's appearance came too early, and was just plain blah...

Anyway, aside from all of that I gave it a 5/10 and I now have a question.

Why isn't Basket Case 2 on DVD? Basket Case 3: The Prodigy is, but not the 2nd. And the 2nd sounds highly entertaining to me! So I want to find it.

Good question. It's a fun flick, but the acting is even worse this time around. And it's even worse in the third chapter.

Well then...

I still have an interest in seeing the 2nd for whatever reason. It's strange, because I really disliked the 1rst directly after watching it...

Has there ever been any news as to the 2nd's release on DVD?

I've only seen the first Basket Case film and I liked it. The acting wasn't gret but it really didn't bother me. I do not know why the second film is not on DVD while as the third one is. So, I have no news about the DVD. But as for the film's director Frank Henenlotter, I read that he will be making a new film called Sick In The Head for Fangoria Films. It will be good to see another film by him.

Part 3 is actually called The Progeny, not The Prodigy.

Ooh. Sorry. I am a dumb ass...

I knew that didn't sound right at all and I just didn't have the urge to take my lazy hands and type n' click to look it up... Americans eh?

It's been a while since anyone has talked about these films on this site. Glad to see some others have seen it although I you all probably don't share my great love and nostalgia for this movie. I got to see it when it was released - I think I was 14. I just loved it, the freakiness of it, the independent shoe-string budget, the bad acting, all of it! And my brother and I were actually very sympathetic to Belial. I actually wished I had had my own Baby Belial!!

It does stand as a testement to freakish, explotative, grass-roots horror and I am glad it has a place in history. ......................................and then there were the sequels.........................um...yeah.

"Basket Case" is classic trash...Classic Grindhouse horror fare.

Camp, gory, nasty....This IS low budget horror.
The great Joe Bob Brigggs was paramount in getting the uncut version out and it was a good thing he did.
One of the last films to have that Flea pit/Grindhouse style before Disney, Giuliani and bulldozers came and knocked all such places down.

The 'SWV' DVD release is a corker!
Along with "Maniac" it's one of the best presentations of an exploitation film.
Lot's of groovy stuff to enjoy, including the now rather old and floppy Belial!

The sequels are pretty weak, with overly stupid (and latex) looking 'mutants' and they just don't have that same 'fee' as the original.

Who else couldn't stop laughing at the stop-motion effects in the original? :D

I loved the first one
a delicious little slice of no-budgte filmamking by a guy who made a damn fine b-classic.
The effects were cheesy and the acting was bad, but at the heart of it was a fun story and a highly entertaining movie.

The second one was higher budgeted and looked much better. I liked this one as well and would love to se it on DVD as my "taped from Showtime at 3am" version on VHS is wearing out rapidly...the ending was a bit lame, but I love the mutants and good old Granny Ross...

the 3rd one was pretty bad. While I would instantly buy a boxset of the trilogy (come on! soeone...Lion's gate, Criterion, someone make this fucker happen!), this was definitely my least favorit of the series.

I also loved the little nod to this flick in Hennenlotter's Brain Damage.

I'm glad to hear he's coming back with a new flick because I also love love loved "Frankenhooker" with the talking video box :)

I'd suggest sending an e-mail to Something Weird Video at questions@somethingweird.com suggesting that they release Basket Case 2 on DVD. I would like to see this film as well.

I tell you what I love me some Basket Case, the first holds a special place in my friends and my heart we used to watch it all the time, and still do. I agree the sequels don't fit with the first one to well but they still have some entertainment, I like the way all the mutants look for some reason. I bought 2 and 3 on ebay (on vhs) for like $6 for both and they are definately worth that. I love Basket Case.

Just saw the first film not too long ago thanks to Something Weird Video. If anyone wants a good DVD copy of the movie, go to Best Buy! They have it for ten bucks along with Return of Swamp Thing! A great buy for anyone interested.

As for the movie, I thought it was a masterpiece of the grindhouse cinema (as was aptly said), the atmosphere is very dirty and the low budget helps make it effective. The acting wasn't horrible in my opinion, unremarkable, but not terrible.

My only beef with the movie is the terrible stop motion they used in the film (they did so very sparingly, but still...). otherwise, one of the best (and last) of a atmosphere I dearly miss.
