View Full Version : Talented actors making shit movies

Sorry if this thread has been done before but why must talented actors and actresses reduce themselves to such bad movies?
Kevin Spacey-Life of David Gale, beyond the sea
Al Pacino- Simone, Gigli(nothing could possibly be worse)
Robert DeNiro- Showtime, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Godsend

why don't directors give these stars better projects than these shit movies, stop giving talentless actors like Orlando Bloom mainstream projects and give better movie options to actors who have played classic characters like Travis bickle, Michael Corleone and Verbal Kint

Well from what I understand, actors are sometimes contractually (sp?) obligated to do movies. I remember Edward Norton talking about The Italian Job, saying it was a shitty movie andhe only did it because he was under contract with the studio.
Sometimes a studio thinks they can take a piece of crap, throw in Pacino and you have a hit that will make millions. Sorry to see that people actually go see these movies just because of the actors. Which is why Hollywood keeps churning out more crap with a few big names in it just to turn a quick profit.

After a long line of duds Kevin Spacey's film career is effectively over.

Ditto De Niro who hasn't made a good film (Ronin) since 1998.

Pacino alternates between crud & good films so he's still managed to retain some street cred.

robert de niro, man, what happened to you. you've been called the greatest actor of all time, when did it all go wrong?
kevin spacey good actor not finding himself a good script which is a shame, cos when a part is right for him, he gets an oscar.
Pacino is the only guy who, to me atleast never made a bad movie. okay camoed in gigli but i didn't necessarily loath that movie. this guy is in competition for one of the greatest filmographies ever. this guy's very intelligent about his roles. the list speaks for itself...

I haven't watched a new DeNiro film since City by the Sea.

Well, you can't expect De Niro to give a Raging Bull-esque performance in every movie he's in. I think he's at the point in his career where he can say "I've given amazing performancs in so many movies. Now I just want to have fun." Personally, I don't mind. I can pop in my copy of The Godfather Part II anytime I want to be reminded how great of an actor he is. And besides, it's not like he's giving *bad* performances. He's just not taking challenging roles anymore. Oh, and I liked Meet the Parents.

And just so you know, there are still great actors past their prime who are still holding up well, like Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, and Paul Newman, to name a few. Pacino's still known to put out a good movie every so often too. As for Kevin Spacey, I don't think he ever achieved legendary status...he was known as an up-and-coming actor with loads of potential who could very well achieve legendary status, but since American Beauty, it's just been downhill, and now it looks like he won't become a legend. But you never know. He might redeem himself.

Kevin Spacey had a good streak of movies going at the end of the 90's, but I agree, with his latest movies like Life of David Gale, K-Pax, and Pay it Forward, he's just gone down hill...

I kinda liked Pay It Foreward a little but the other two, not really. But even Kevin Spacey takes a crappy movie and revives it with a great role, in my opinion. He's definatly one of my favorite actors.

Kevin Spacey hasn't been in a good movie since American Beauty.

Also, let's have a look at Christopher Walken's career for the past couple years: The Country Bears, Kangaroo Jack, Gigli, The Rundown, Envy, The Stepford Wives. And people say that DeNiro has been in a lot of shit movies lately.

Christopher Walken is one of the coolest actors to ever hit our screens, even if he has picked shity movies for the past few years. He would be the only reason I would even consider watching these movies. Will Ferrel is starting to become that type of actor for me too.

I think Spacey has been trying to get Beyond The Sea made for a while. He looks at Darin's as a compelling story.

Christopher Walken got an Oscar nod for Catch Me If You Can. I think his was the best performance of the movie. Was also in Man on Fire, so his decisions in movie roles aren't all bad.

And none of these actors know for sure what's going to be successful or not. Although, I do believe DeNiro should've seen Rocky & Bullwinkle coming. But he was in Meet the Parents which was very funny and made lots of mula.

Al Pacino didn't star in Gigli and isn't the reason it sucked - he was probably just wanting to reteam with his Scent of a Woman director. His film choices have not sucked because he was in HBO's "Angels of America" which won like 101 Emmy's - he won for best actor in a miniseries.

I've never been a big Kevin Spacey fan, so somebody else can make that argument.

I do feel Harrison Ford has slipped by the waste side, but some of the projects he's looking at (news via JoBlo) are looking prettty sweet. Here's hoping for Indiana Jones 4.

Sometimes actors have to pay the bills, too.
Virtuosity, starred Denzel Washington and a still unknown Russell Crowe.
The movie was something to pass a couple of hours and while Russell was good despite the script, Denzel looked as if he was sleepwalking,

All the above is true, but when kevin spacey gets the lead role in the new film Survivor by chucky P. I'm almost positive it will boost him back as a major player.

i liked all 3 of those movies. They weren't Spacey's best work but they were still entertaining movies. David Gale was the worst one, but it was still a mediocre film. it wasnt terrible at all.

And Survivor is going to fucking rule.

As long as they dont fuck it up like Dreamcatcher.

Spacey is the lead in Survivor? Isn't he way too old for the part? Pay It Forward and The Life of David Gale are cinematic abortions. Absolutely vile, worthless movies. I nominate Michael Madsen. He's no Pacino or De Niro, but I love the dude and he's in way too many awful movies.

Donald Sutherland has been in a fairly great many shitty movies --- and some good, too. I think Ray Liotta is one of the under-used actors out there, I mean the father's role in Blow....c'mon it's Ray frigging Liotta.

I have heard that Gary Oldman did Harry Potter simply because he needed the money, so did William H Macy a few years ago.

And Anthony Hopkins doing Hearts in Atlantis...he hated it...it's piece of s***t.

Have you seen Beyond the Sea yet? Last I checked, it is coming out for awhile. I'd at least wait till the movie comes out to knock it (especially considering that its Spacey's labor of love, and probably a damn good film).

Beyond The Sea is actually a very good film, a definite revival in his career. He's a also a very talented singer.

With the Likes of De Niro and Pacino i agree they have had some stinkers (and some fairly good) over the recent years, they haven't really got anything to prove anymore.

I haven't watched a new DeNiro film since City by the Sea.

A vastly underrated film, I say. So are 15 MINUTES, THE SCORE and MEN OF HONOR. I also enjoyed his comic turns in MEET THE PARENTS and ANALYZE THIS. I think we should just leave De Niro and Pacino alone. They've given us more than enough share of great films. If they want to do a film just for money, they're entitled to it. Besides, I'd rather watch them in a mediocre film anytime than someone like Cruise, for example, in anything.

Seriously, we need more of Tom Savini ala From Dusk till Dawn (Sex Machine) kick supernatural ass for my popcorn fun. Or zombie movies since that's my #1 horror genre.

Yeah I believe most movies nowadays are just not the type of quality they use to make. Today it's all about money and stars will serve shit for a good paycheck, and we can clearly see what Ben Affleck has been doing all this year.

My A+ List that need more good roles in good movies:

Denzel Washington
Robert De Niro
Al Pacino
Chris Walken
Samuel Jackson

Sad to say even Jackson has some shit movies to his name, sad after he earned my profound respect after Pulp Fiction.

You think his career is in a slump? Really? This year alone he gave a very good performance in Man on Fire (I'm not crazy about the movie, but he was good in it) and from what I've heard, The Manchurian Candidate as well. He just won an Oscar less than 3 years ago for what many people would call the best performance of his career (not me, although it's close). He is becoming a household name (if he isn't already), and he is a strong contender for a Lifetime Achievement award someday, maybe 10 or so years from now. How, exactly, is that the description of someone who "could use more good roles?" The man is on fire. No pun intended. Okay, maybe a little.

In my opinion, an example of an A+ actor who could use more good roles as of lately would be Morgan Freeman, although looking at the upcoming Million Dollar Baby and An Unfinished Life, maybe that's a request that has already been answered.

Surely John Travolta falls into this category.

Oh and Michael Madsen. That Free Willey shit was strictly a paycheck. Glad to see that he knoocked it out of the park again in Kill Bill.

Pay it forward was cool, The life of David Gale was mediocre but Spacey did a decent job even though at times he appeared to be bored.

Christopher Walken is a Master and makes almost any film he is in worth watching for his part alone.

Denzel Washington Sucks!!! I liked Man on Fire simply because I think it is the film The Punisher should have been. Washington dosen't act he is merely quoting lines from the script. His performance in Training Day was no better than any other movie he has done.

I have seen many of horrible movies where the actors did a good job , the script just sucked . Take Phone Booth. Colin Farrel, Forest Whitaker, and the voice of Keifer Sutherland were great. The script however was a piece of crap.

There is also the editing standpoint. An actor may read the script and think " Now this is a good story" Go through the proccess of making the movie and by the time the editor gets done chopping the shit out of it ( or leaving too much) it's ruined.

Every now and then while browsing through the video store, my friends and I have to turn to each other and ask "Just what in the hell is WRONG with Cuba Gooding Jr?"

Seriously, didn't this guy win an Oscar at some point? I'm asking because it's starting to seem like such a surreal prospect now. Come on, Rat Race, Snow Dogs, Radio, PEARL HARBOR? Does he read these scripts, at all?

Anthony Hopkins has got a lot to answer for after Hannibal, Red Dragon, and Hearts in Atlantis.

DeNiro is in a real slump these days too, nothing really good since Analyze This (which, to be fair, WAS excellent). Analyze That and Meet the Parents were awful, The Score was not awful but very blah, Men of Honor was barely a blip on the radar (add that one to Cuba's list too while we're at it).

Ben Affleck, man, remember back after Good Will Hunting when this guy was a hot ticket? After Pearl Harbor, Phantoms, Gigli, Bounce, and Reindeer Games, that gig on Hollywood Squares should be looking AWFULLY tempting by now. Good for him he's got Kevin Smith around to play Tarantino to his Travolta. Although, even Jersey Girl kinda sucked.

And let's not even start talking Travolta. Seriously, it would hurt me, it would physically hurt me.

Voight's a strange one.

When he was a bonafide star he'd make about 2 films a decade.

Now he's doing character roles he's the busiest mofo around & like you say will appear in almost anything.

Maybe he's got a big mortgage.

Robert De Niro has a handful of films coming out in the next year or so. This includes a new horror film, Hide and Seek and a drama called The Good Shepherd. The latter film will star Leonardo DiCaprio and be directed by De Niro. It will mark De Niro's second time in the director's chair since 1993's A Bronx Tale.

Al Pacino will star in this December's Shakespeare adaptation, The Merchant of Venice, directed by Michael Radford (Il Postino).

That is my defense of these two actors.

I agree that De Niro has gotten sidetracked in recent years, mugging for the camera in enjoyable (Meet the Parents; Analyze This) and awful (Analyze That; Godsend) movies. He should stop doing comedies and do more dramatic films, which seems to be where he's headed in the next two years.

I actually think Pacino has been doing phenomenal work in the last few years, including The Insider (1999) and Insomnia (2002).

Rebecca Romijn made some bad choises ( The Punisher, Godsend) but I do think that she can act....or are her looks clouding my vision:D

and gotte agree with both Cuba Gooding Jr and Ben Affleck, looks like Pearl Harbour is the movie that sunk both careers
