Bela Lugosi stars as a mad scientist who genetically alters bats to A) increase in size and B) become violently reactive to shaving cream. This is a vertiginous succession of wonky special effects and bottomless plot holes. But it's fun. It's more entertaining than it should be, considering that it's just another subaqueous cheapie from the '40s. Lugosi is delightfully demented as usual. The supporting cast is serviceable, but there's no real reason to ramble on about the acting. The Devil Bat is a diverting it-just-happens-to-be-on-AMC-at-3 a.m.-and-I-can't-sleep type of flick. Expect the expected.

I've wanted to see this for quite some time... I figured the Alpha DVD would be a good way to buy it since it's only 5.99. Sounds like it should be an okay viewing.

If you liked the story line, there's also the similarly themed The Flying Serpent with George Zucco.

Yeah, as far as Bela goes, I think his best stuff is White Zombie, The Wolfman and last but not least Universals Dracula.

I havent seen this one, but Ive been tempted to. Doesnt sound like a must see though.

It's not "must-see" material, but it's not "must-burn" material either. Glut, have you seen The Devil Bat's Daughter?

You kidding? I've never even heard of that movie! Is it a sequel?

I'm thinking about picking this one up just before Christmas, it sounds like a gas.

Well, it's an unrelated sequel. It seems like your standard mystery, but I'd pick it up if the price was right.

Who's up for a game of plinko?

I see my naivity is showing again...

What, exactly, is plinko?

Oh, I never was a Price is Right fan. I was always annoyed by Bob Barker and got him confused with an old guy who lived across the street.

I'm more of a Whammies fan.

Dealing with George Zucco, I know who he is, but I'm not a great fan.

To me, this is the ultimate crappy cash-in-because-you've-got-a-big-star film. Nothing makes sense, nothing has a purpose, and I was too angry to laugh at the unintentional humor.

So-bad-it's-good this is not, more like so-bad-it's-gone-from-bad-to-good-back-to-bad.

20 hyphens in this post.

I got this as an early Christmas Present, but then had to send it back (didn't work right), got the new copy and was unsurprised by what I got. Unintentionally funny, but I got into the story and Bela was hilarious fun.

I just aquired a copy of "The Devil Bat" for X-Mas, there is a company called 'DIGIVIEW Productions, which happens to be a budget DVD maker. They have a ton of 'B horror flicks' for only '$1 Dollar' each....look out 'Alpha'! :)
