View Full Version : Most undeserving best picture winners?

I have an easy answer for this one:Shakespeare in Love. Saving Private Ryan was so much better.
And how about that Titanic? It was a good film, but I preferred Good Will Hunting and L.A Confidential, but I guess Titanic was more of an oscar film.
Can't come up with a whole lot more right away, maybe when/if LOTR wins, I'll come back and place it to the top of the list.

These were the standouts-
Shakespeare in Love winning over Private Ryan
Forrest Gump winning over Shawshank Redemption
Two others that come to mind are
Ordinary people
Rain Man

American Beauty was not undeserving, that deserved every award it won. It was clearly the best film of the year, and it deserved all its awars.

Gladiator 4/10
and
American Beauty 5/10

The movies below I liked, but I think other movies were the real best pictures of the year (well, at least out of the ones the Oscars had nominated).
Gladiator over either Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or Traffic.
Forrest Gump over The Shawshank Redemption.
Shakespeare in Love over Elizabeth (and for the fucking Best Actress award too...I'll never forgive the Oscars for not giving it to Blanchett!).
The English Patient over Jerry Maguire and Fargo.
The Sound of Music over Doctor Zhivago.

Well, let's see...
Gladiator over Erin Brockovich. I know it ranked about 4th, only above Chocolat, but I still wanted it to win.
For me urbanlegend23, I think Emily Watson should have won over Gwyneth. You should see Hilary and Jackie if you haven't. She's brilliant in that movie.
American Beauty deserved to win.
I didn't really mind Shakespeare in Love winning. But I remember how shocked I was when Harrison Ford said the bard's name though.

Why is everyone mentioning Titanic?? Am I the only that thought that it deserved to win Best Picture? I thought is an excellant movie and much better then anything else nominated. L.A. Confidential? Yeah, sure it's a great movie, but, did it really deserve Best Picture over Titanic?? I don't think so... But, you guys seem to... Which is cool.

DTM... I'm glad that Titanic (9/10) won Best Picture.
I don't think I'll ever understand what people like about Elizabeth and why they hate Shakespeare in Love so much. SIL is in my top three movies of all time. I hadn't even seen it when it won the Oscar. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif Most of the RL people I talk to all love it, yet online it's considered trash. ?! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/frown.gif
l.a. confidential was WAY better than titanic
saving private ryan deserved to win the oscar instead of shakespeare in love

THE LEAST-DESERVING BEST PICTURE OSCAR-WINNERS
1. SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE (1998)
2. ORDINARY PEOPLE (1980)
3. DANCES WITH WOLVES (1990)
4. BRAVEHEART (1995)
5. THE ENGLISH PATIENT (1996)
6. GLADIATOR (2000)
7. TITANIC (1997)
8. FORREST GUMP (1994)
ALTERNATE BEST PICTURE OSCAR WINNERS
1. SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (1998)
2. RAGING BULL (1980)
3. GOODFELLAS (1990)
4. BABE (1995)
5. FARGO (1996)
6. TRAFFIC (2000)
7. L.A. CONFIDENTIAL (1997)
8. PULP FICTION (1994)
I am not saying that the Best Picture Oscar winners were bad movies, they just weren't the best of that specific year. My alternate list is confined to those other nominated films, not such non-nominated classics such as BOOGIE NIGHTS, ALMOST FAMOUS or REQUIEM FOR A DREAM.

I hope you're kidding when you say Babe. I think Forrest Gump deserved it's Oscar, although Shakespear in Love and Gladiator didn't. Almost Famous was a much better film than Gladiator, and Saving Private Ryan was superior to Shakespear in Love

Dude, please tell me someone hacked into your account because you just picked Babe over Braveheart?!?!?!?
Shakespeare in Love
English Patient
Driving Miss Dasiy
Gladiator

I was genuinely moved by BABE, moreso than BRAVEHEART. I'm a sucker for animal flicks, and usually don't like war pics.

I agree with all the choices Antonio, except Babe over Braveheart (because I didn't like Babe that much), and Raging Bull over Ordinary People. What is it that some schmoes have got against it winning over Raging Bull. Thinking about it, I really don't mind which of them had won the oscar. Although Scorsese may have deserved the Best Director statue. I would've liked to see "The Stunt Man" win, but the Academy wouldn't go for a picture like that. You did say that "Ordinary People" was not necessarily a bad movie, but it wasn't as bad a snub as other movies were. Like "The English Patient" winning, ugh! Or "Driving Miss Daisy" which is one of the BIGGER snubs. Even "Dances with Wolves" and "Titanic" were not good choices by the Academy. I really loved Ordinary People, that is why I'm taking defense for it; it wasn't lesser in greatness than Raging Bull, just about the same.....

I haven't seen Elizabeth yet, and I did like Shakespeare in Love. But they chose it over one of my all time favorite films Saving Private Ryan which was definitely better than SIL.

American Beauty not only deserved every award it won, it deserved more. It should be the fourth movie of all-time to win the five main Oscars...
Shakespeare in Love, although I really enjoyed it, certainly did not deserve to win over Saving Private Ryan.
I truly don't believe Gone with the Wind deserved Best Picture of The Wizard of Oz.
Gladiator didn't deserve to win Best Picture. Almost Famous or Cast Away, which were not nominated, were far more deserving.

It was interesting to see that a few people dislike American Beauty or at least thought it was very ordinary. I am curious as to what elements of the movie did you guys not like?

THE ENGLISH PATIENT DID NOT DESERVE TO WIN BEST PICTURE!
This film was just...................shit. Too slow, too boring, too long, too overly sentimental. The performances were good but the movie itself made me want to go to sleep.

I'm gonna make 2 different lists here:
UNDESERVING BECAUSE IT WAS BAD:
Gladiator over just about anything (Traffic especially)
Driving Miss Daisy over any other nominee
Rain Man wasn't very good but the other nominees were nothing special either
UNDESERVING BECAUSE IT WAS NOT AS GOOD AS OTHER MOVIES THAT YEAR:
Titanic over LA Confidential
The English Patient over Jerry Maguire and Fargo
Dances With Wolves over Goodfellas
Rocky over Taxi Driver, Network and All The President's Men
Gone With The Wind over The Wizard Of OZ
I think Ordinary People is just as great as Raging Bull, but it's obvious that people criticise it because it's not an entertaining movie
