View Full Version : Rock Star Death that affected you the most.

There are so many of these.....but which one really cut you deep (I'm referring to the overdose/murder/suicide ones). I think both Keith Moon's and Ian Curtis' would have been rough but considering I wasn't born yet, I will go with what most people will say and that's Kurt Cobain's. I remember where I was, what I was wearing....all that shit. But yeah let me know.

Out of those you mentioned, I have only heard of Cobain, so I can't say the other two affected me. I hadn't heard of Nirvana when I heard that Cobain had shot himself, so it wasn't a big deal to me then. (I was young and foolish  )
Another one I sadly remember is Thomas "Quorthon" Forsberg of Bathory, when he died this june. 39 is not an age in which to die of heart failure! :(

Since not a lot of people who I gave a fuck about have died when I actually KNEW who they were, I'll say the only one I really remember: Chuck Schuldiner.

If not, Jeff Buckley.

Elliott Smith.

Self-inflicted stab-wound.

Total waste.

Even though I didn't know about Jeff Buckley when he died, I think his death has affected me the most. Can't remember any others that have affacted me in any way close to that.

John Lennon's death had the most impact to me. I was 11 when he was gunned down. It had a lot of impact for me because I was a Beatles fan from a very young age, so I was shocked to hear it.

Same Here John Lennon. I remember seeing LOTS of FANS sad bunched up together holding candle light vigils when I saw it captured on the news when his death happened. :(

Ian Curtis...despite the fact that he took his own life when I was just a kiddie, the more I think about Ian's short time on this here planet, the more it pains me.

Radio 1 DJ John Peel's death has probably had the most profound effect on me. If it weren't for Peely, the Jarvis Cocker I know and love today would probably still be mulling around Sheffield making wanky student films and bumming fags. John enriched so many lives over a 40 year period, and I think these people say it best...

Jack White - He was the last important DJ in the world.

Pete Townshend (The Who) - 'Our John' is just irreplaceable.

Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) - It's impossible to imagine what the music scene would have been like without him. It's incalculable, actually.

Nick Mason (Pink Floyd) - There simply hasn't been anyone like him in the past 40 years, I suspect there's a whole raft of music that would have disappeared without a trace if it wasn't for John. It's difficult to see now where that is going to come from now.

Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order) - You really sort of feel like not only have you lost a friend, music has lost a friend as well.

I guess I can rightfully say that Kobain was the main person to get me into music. He was alive when I started playing guitar at the tender age of 9. So when he died, I literally cried for days upon days. Although it brought me closer to him and his music, but my happy glass is only half empty now (rather then empty period)… his death still seems farce though, sad.

I pretty much knew he did NOT kick the bucket. His career may be dead but he is alive and kicking. I checked via IMDB to verify... :D

Freddie Mercury. I was a Queen fan from an early age, pretty much by default as my Mum is a fan. I remember crying.

BCV didn't say Pete was dead, she said that John Peel was and then quoted Pete talking about him (as well as quoting Jack White and Jarvis Cocker and Peter Hook).

Layne Staley. I would say Schuldiner, but I was only vaguely familiar with Death around the time of his passing.

Buddy Holly, for me. This is obviously one that has touched me after the fact (February 3rd, 1959). I'm a big fan of early rock 'n' roll and of Holly's in particular and the plane crash has always fascinated and affected me, since my very early teens.

I finally got a chance to visit the crash site earlier this year and take pictures. Anyway, 22 years of age is way too young for anybody, especially someone that had the potential to be even greater than he already was. The fact that Ritchie Valens (17) and The Big Bopper (28) died in the same crash, makes it all the more tragic.

http://rds.yahoo.com/S=96062883/K=holly+plane+/v=2/SID=e/TID=I011_77/l=IVI/SIG=12cdh6beg/*-http%3A//www.hotshotdigital.com/WellAlwaysRemember/Buddy.Images/plain.jpg

With Elvis gone to the army, Chuck Berry in jail, Jerry Lee Lewis' marital indiscretions and Little Richard turning to the priesthood, the plane crash was the final blow to the rock 'n' roll "uprising" that had been going on the last few years. It would take 5 long years for things to turn around again...

Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley and John Lennon also rank pretty high up there.

PS: Whoops, I didn't realize this was only meant for murder/overdose/suicide deaths and not accidental deaths. I just saw Freddie Mercury there and figured anything goes.

I remember that day, mostly because the next day, a lot of people in my class wore Cobain or Nirvana t-shirts, and our damn principal made them all change, and even suspended someone who refused to.

This may not count since i wasn't born until a couple years after he died, but John Lennon's death still affected me when I read all about it. He was one of the most influenctual artist that had ever lived, both musically and politically, and even scared Nixon so bad, he had the FBI trail him and tap his phone.

John Lennon's death effected me the most, personally. I was in the 6th grade and remember the teachers running out into the hallways to talk about it. They were all crying. It was so sad. Being an adult now and thinking about all of the great things he's not around to accomplish makes me sad.

I think, in general, anyone who is taken out before their full potential is realized is a tragedy. Some names that come to mind are:

Brad Knoll (Sublime)
Aaliyah
Jeff Buckley
Marvin Gaye
Lisa Lopes (Left Eye)
Tupac
Joey Ramone

I wasn't alive when it happened, but it still ranks (to me) as one of the most important incidents of the 20th Century.

Elliott Smith is the one that has messed me up the worst. Probably the first time a rock idol of mine has kicked the bucket whilst I lived and breathed their music. And as Kaufman put it, it was a total waste.

I would have to say Joe Strummers death affected me the most. He was one of my idols growing up. I remember hearing of his death in the early morning on NPR. I was driving and I had to pull over. I was in total shock I thought I was hearing things.

Cliff Burton, i wasn't a fan of metalica when he died, too young at the time to know good music, but no one on metallica could hold a candle to his skill and the emotion he put into his playing.

I wasn't even born when he died, but I'm going to have to say Keith Moon. Hearing his amazing ability and energy on earlier Who recordings and then hearing the alcohol and drugs taking their toll on later ones is sad enough, but seeing the grin spreading across his face at the end of their performance of Won't Get Fooled Again on The Kids Are Alright and knowing that he would die a little more than three months later is absolutely heartbreaking.

:( R.I.P. Keith.

I know these aren't really rock stars, but I was sad to hear when Stevie Ray Vaughan died.

Also, more recently Johhny Cash. I've been a fan of his for a long time.
Of course, now that he's dead you hear his music a lot more. Half the movies that came out this year had a Johnny Cash song in it.

Wow...there are a lot of dead stars mentioned. Layne Staley and Cliff Burton both are great choices. Randy Rhoads was great when playing for Ozzy. The man was on par with greats like Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Some others that deserve mention:

Jim Morrison - The Doors
John Bonham - Led Zeppelin
Shannon Hoon - Blind Melon
George Harrison - The Beatles (George was a great musician, even if you didn't care for the Beatles)

Dimebag Darrell, I cannot fucking function properly now because of this....who the fuck shoots someone dead at a concert, these people make music for us and a "fan" kills them? Dimebag is my top choice, other notables are: Kurt Cobain, Shannon Hoon, Cliff Burton, Layne Staley (his death bothered me deeply, even though it was inevitable).

R.I.P. Dimebag, you were fucking awesome.

Right now, the fact that Damage Plan has suffered this loss is just tragic. And on the already infamous anniversary. Dimebag Darrell never deserved this. May his band, his friends and family find comfort in this tragic time.

Rest In Peace, Darrell.

By far Dimebag's. I was damn near driven to tears by the death of a person I have never met. I've been listening to the Damageplan record constantly since wendsday and it really is insanely depressing, so much talent gone.:(

Kurt Cobain died when I was 14 and being so impressionable his dealth hit me fairly hard. At 25 I look back and am thankful I made it through my teenage years unscathed.
Anyways I attatched a poem I wrote then, (it's unformated that's the only way I could upload it) Not my greatest but I still hold it close.

Another death that affected me was Shannon Hoon from Blind melon.
I have a rare acoustic version of "Change" that everytime I listen to it I cry.

I don’t feel the suns comin’ out today
Its staying in, it’s gonna find another way.
As I sit here in this misery, I don’t
Think I’ll ever see the sun from here.
And oh as I fade away,
They’ll all look at me and say, and they’ll say,
Hey look at him! I’ll never live that way.
But that’s okay
They’re just afraid to change.
When you feel your life ain’t worth living
You’ve got to stand up and
Take a look around you then a look way up to the sky.
And when your deepest thoughts are broken,
Keep on dreaming boy, cause when you stop dreamin’ it’s time to die.
And right now I don't wanna die,
And as we all play parts of tomorrow,
Some ways will work and other ways we’ll play.
But I know we all can’t stay here forever,
So I want to write my words on the face of today.
And then they’ll paint it
And oh as I fade away,
They’ll all look at me and they’ll say,
Hey look at him and where he is these days.
When life is hard, you have to change.

I'm currently only 14, and after vividly watchin some Behind The Music or something shows on Nirvana I decided to get a CD because I'd loved everything I've heard of clips off those shows but after I got the CD, I found out Kurt Cobain killed himself and I was just so sad. It still makes me sad. Personally, I dont know what to think about whether or not he did it. Some stuff doesn't make sense to me, but I dont want to get into that.

But I remember (even though she's not a rock star), Aaliyah's death was extremely shocking for me. She was very talented, great R&B music. And just right in her prime....she was going to be a star. I was only 12 when that happened. I remember when I heard it I even cried a little bit, which surprised me. I dont know.

R.I.P. All talented stars cut away.

Layne Staley.

It's not particularly why or how he died, it's just that he could have done so much more musicially. The sky was the limit for him and he pushed it all away with his addiction. I still can't believe it, even now.

Elliott Smith.

I knew who he was when he died, but had only heard "Needle in the Hay", and it didnt much matter to me either way. Eight months later, I discover "Everything Reminds me of Her", and fall in love with his music. After listening to about every song if his I could find, I then realized he had died eight months prior. Thankfully basement on the hill was released, but now we'll never hear from him, and his amazing voice again. I wish I would of found out about him sooner. He is now my favorite singer of all time.
