Who do you think is the most underrated actress working today? My vote would definitely go to Brittany Murphy, who was fantastic in all her movies so far, but never seems to get much recognition.

Excellent choice, Brittany Murphy is extremely underrated.
I'm tempted to say Thora Birch, since she has deserved two Oscar nominations already and hasn't gotten one, but since a lot of people like her...
I'd say Leelee Sobieski is one of the most underrated actresses working today.

Fuck, urbanlegend! You took my answer! That's what came to mind as soon as I read the subject. She was great in the mediocre DON'T SAY A WORD and she was robbed of an Oscar for GIRL, INTERRUPTED. She was much better than Jolie and delivered such a heartbreaking performance in that movie.
Before she got all the accolades for A BEAUTIFUL MIND, I would have said Jennifer Connelly. But she has since made her breakthrough.

I thought she was Oscar-worthy in DON'T SAY A WORD, and her performance in GIRL, INTERRUPTED almost put me to tears.
I love Thora Birch also, but she gets lots of critics association awards so I didn't write her. She's a very promising and god-given, beautiful actress. I want to see her in some more adult roles, her performances in AMERICAN BEAUTY and GHOST WORLD were superb.

I agree urbanlegend. I also think she was also funny in that movie. I mean she made me laugh when she said that...
"Everyone likes to be alone when it comes out, I like to be alone when it goes in. To me, eating in the cafeteria is like being with twenty girls all at once taking a dump."
Haha..

Definetly Joan Cusack and Parker Posey.
They can turn "water" into "wine" if ya know what I mean. They are both pure magic and do not get the recognition that they deserve!

Parker Posey all the muthafuckin' way! One of my favorite actresses, she kicked ass in Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman, and the extremely underrated The House of Yes. Jennifer Coolidge is also a great supporting player. Give her some credit already.

I have always had a soft spot for Bridget Fonda. She is an actress who I believe has both great potential and is also underrated. Unfortunately she seems to have a knack of making bad choices when it comes to selecting the movies she wants to be involved with and thus her career has suffered accordingly.

Natalie Portman...ok ok she has alot of recognition from Star Wars(hopefully it won't hinder her), but just look at some of her work especially in The Professional and Beautiful Girls.

I would also say Brittany Murphy. I think she deserved an Oscar nomination for supporting actress in Don't Say A Word. IMO she gave the second best supporting performance of the year with only Jennifer Connelly ahead of her. I would also like to add Scarlett Johansen to the list, as well as Kirsten Dunst. Dunst was brilliant in Interview With The Vampire and Crazy/Beautiful. Johansen was brilliant in The Horse Whisperer and Ghost World. All three deserve to get more attention for the incredible acting skill that they have.

This one's easy:Meg Ryan. People don't seem to take her seriously and think that she can only do romantic comedy. Well she's the best in that genre but that doesn't mean she couldn't do anything else.

Emily Watson.

Her performance in Breaking The Waves was simply stunning. And again, she was superb in Hilary And Jackie.
She has received two Oscar nominations, and that might cause you to think that she's not underrated. But she rarely gets mentioned when people list their favorite actresses. Many people don't even know about her. So, I would say she's definitely underrated.

.Oh, and how could I forget: Claire Forlani
Unfortunately I haven't seen here in many leads, she's done some small roles in films like The Rock, but her performance in Meet Joe Black was something else alright. I heard she was also in Mallrats, I should like that film with my favorite actress and my favorite director, I gotta find it somewhere!

Great topic, great choices so far.
There are aplenty, but I'm going with Thora Birch, whose subtle performance in GHOST WORLD ranks as one of the best of 2001. I also enjoyed her in AMERICAN BEAUTY, and she was an excellent child actress, most notably in a mediocre film called PARADISE, where she played Elijah Wood's best friend.

I must add Alfre Woodard and Mary McDonnell.
I just watched the film Passion Fish (9/10) in which they both star and I must say, what AMAZING performances, two of the best I have ever seen. Both actresses are truly underrated!

Another great, underrated actress is Sarah Polley, who stole the show in two ensemble films: Doug Liman's GO! and Atom Egoyan's THE SWEET HEREAFTER.

She starting to get discovered. But I trully believe Julia Stiles is a great actress ever since I saw her in 10 Things I Hate about You. Even if the said movies was not amazing. Her performance really made it interesting for me. And now with her great performance in The Business of Strangers. I see a great future going on for this young(and really cute) actress.

I think that Robin Tunney is very under-rated. She was in end of Days, last year. And a movie called Empire Records from 95.
