Hi,

Recently, a store near the place I live sells imported Troma-dvd's. I've already seen some good Troma-movies (Bloodsucking Freaks, The Wizard of Gore, Rabid Grannies), but also some crappy movies which I personally liked less (Mother's Day, Surf Nazis Must Die, Troma's War, The Toxic Avenger => sorry about this last one, it was funny though).

When you see which movies I liked and disliked, would you be able to give me a few tips of enjoyable Troma-movies? I'm looking for some great gore, funny stuff, some sort of story and some crazy ideas (that's why "Surf Nazis Must Die!" drew my attention, but unfortunately it wasn't offensive at all)...

Thanks in advantage,

Jan

You might want to try Beware! Children at Play. It's not "good" per se, but it's enjoyable on a hedonistic level. I've also heard "good" things about Tromeo & Juliet and Class of Nuke 'Em High.

The only TROMA that I've ever freaked out about was Dead Dudes In The House, which was a bit of a shameless ripoff of Evil Dead, but somehow really... well.. cool!

Terror Firmer is also a bit of fun to watch. Messy, messy, messy.

There are for most extensive purposes, two categories of Troma films. In house productions (usually directed by Kaufman and Herz) and their pick ups (distribution rights belong to Troma). Since you seemed to really enjoy some of their older pick ups, I might suggest Class of Nukem' High. A bit more 80s, but more linear on the violence and lighter on the humor.

Since you haven't liked the in house productions that you've seen, I'd stay away from the ultra stuff like Toxic Avenger sequels and Tromeo and Juliet.

Honestly, maybe you should just give up on them, there really aren't many pick ups worth watching and if you don't like the in house type of comedy/horror, you may have a hard time establishing a basis to which films you should watch.

My favs are Tromeo and Juliet and Class of nuke'm high. I'd avoid the "class of" sequels though. Frostbiter and Beware children at play are decent. Redneck Zombies has some good gore and funny parts but overall is pretty bad. Decampitated is pretty lame.

Thanks everybody (especially you, Gluttony: your post really got to me, and I think you really know what you're talking about considering this matter and know what I'm looking for)!

I've heard good things about "Class of Nuke 'em High", and since you guys are all positive about this one, I'm gonna check that one out (if it's in store). If I dislike it, I'm gonna drop out of Troma-school ;)

I liked The Toxic Avenger, Troma's War, Def By Temptation, Killer Condom, Tromeo And Juliet, Bloodsucking Freaks, Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger Part 4 and Terror Firmer. I saw Class Of Nuke 'Em High but did not like it.

I've also seen Cannibal! The Musical which I forgot to mention above. That one was good too. At the mall they carry Teenage Cat Girls In Heat and Hall Monitor but I haven't seen them.

Thanks. A post before mine but after the one I just quoted made a good point. Combat Shock (a pick up I tend to forget) is a good idea because it's very bleak and at times horrific. Very little of Troma's humor is in the movie if I can recall. I'd put that before the others.

However, if you like movies to be entertaining (an argument frequently spawned around these parts) I'd be wary. If you get into being disturbed and provoked to think, than you'll be more ready for the experience. Not saying that entertainment is mindless... but, uh... well, it all goes back to the King of the Ants thread.

Oh, and I didn't like that movie. No surprise.

Oh yeah, there's also Troma's War to look at. It's pretty good. I have a VHS from Media saying that it is the uncut, uncensored, full length version.

i second that (i'm a woman, and i enjoyed it). i highly recommend any of the "in house" troma movies to people who love cheese-tastic cinema - terror firmer is one of my faves. but then again, i'm a bit biased - my dog's name is toxie.

Always loved the Toxic Avenger series as the goofy enjoyable entertainment that they are meant to be. But I also dug Class of Nuke 'em High, Surf Nazis Must Die, and the snuff film that they released back in he 70's, Bloodsucking Freaks for the pure shock value. That midget torturer guy was hilarious!

"Redneck Zombies"...fun trash! "Class of Nukem High" very cool!

My favorite troma effort has to be "Mothers Day"---before they were even called 'Troma'. Here is a little a true story Id like to share, back in the 80's somewhere about, I met this girl whos father was invloved with the good people at troma in New York.

When her father found out I was a 'Horror Fan' he lent me the actual work print for 'Toxic Avenger'!

The interesting thing is, he had me sign off on somekind of legal document because "TA" hadnt been screened by anyone outside the studio, and I had to promise not to show it to anyone---he wanted my honest reaction of the film. I took it home popped it into the VCR and thought what the hell is this shit?

Overall, I did get a kick out of it! I just didnt think it was going to be such a cult hit, I even got posters and other cool goodies from the girls father...sweet deal...I still have them! :D

It's nice that 'Troma' get people's films out, but it does annoy when films that are nothing to do with them get listed as 'Troma Films'.

"Cannibal the Musical" was out in the UK before 'Troma' even picked it up under it's original "Alferd Packer" title for example.

And almost always the films (some like "Bloodsucking Freaks" are years old) listed as favourite Troma films are not actually Troma films at all, like "Combat Shock".

"Terror Firmer" is the best actual Troma film I have seen.

Lloyd is great, the set-up of Troma is fun, but a hell of a lot of their films are actually just awful.

Chillers was decent.

It was bought by Troma, and features six people who are waiting for a bus that is late. They all have one thing in common, they each had terrible dreams the night before. They all take turns telling their wicked stories while they wait on the bus.

If you're up for something weird, I suggest "Christmas Evil." It gets a lot of flack, but I really enjoy it. It's about a obsessed-Christmas-freak-turned-killer-Santa-Claus, but it isn't a straight forward slasher. It kind of works as a character study, a la "Henry: A Portraid of a Serial Killer." It probably is not as good as that film, but I think "Christmas Evil" is worth checking out if you're up for something different.

I used to be a big fan of Troma but lately I've started to get very bored with them. The only Troma movies I would recomend still are
Cannibal: The Musicial (I hardly count this as a Troma movie though)
Tromio and Juliet
and Bloodsucking Freaks
I still own Redneck Zombies so I guess I would say that too but I'm slowly starting to not like it.

Oh yeah. Cannibal: The Musical and Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D. are both pretty goddamn awesome too.

I didn't really care for it, but Surf Nazi Must Die has the coolest title ever.

Oh yeah, and Christmas Evil is the most boring, poorly acted, stupidest piece of crap I have ever seen... well behind the 1969 film It's Alive.

I second this. Some of the segments were really good. The vampire bit was a pretty stodgy though.
