In answer to your first question...you can put anything you like on it. You can download all the MP3s you like and transfer them. If you own an album you can whack it into your PC and the iTunes software will automatically turn the whole thing into MP3s.
As for the second question. Your friend is talking out of the same hole he uses to excrete waste. If used properly the iPod's battery will last way longer than a couple of months. Certainly more than a year and in most case much longer than that. As for it being irreplaceable. Bullshit!!! Again. You can send it off to Apple and they will replace the battery for $99.00 (I think). Alternatively there are a lot of other places that will provide this service for half that. If you are feeling confident there are a lot of guides scattered around the world wide web that will take you step by step through the procedure yourself.
Hope this helps. I've had my Ipod for close on two months now. Best £200+ i've spent.

thanks for the info psychocandy, i know i didnt ask but i had the same queries as envi, anyways what kind of iPod do you own, i believe im going to be getting a 20GB one, i just wanted to know if its better to get one of those or the 4GB ones?

Yes, you can play any .mp3 file on your iPod. Battery shouldn't be a problem, you can change them yourself if it goes bad. They sell kits for it. If you are sure you're going to get one, I would go ahead and rip all of my cd's now. I had everything ready for mine when I purchased it.
Make sure all your songs are tagged correctly. If the artist's name isn't spelled EXACTLY the same, then you will see duplicates on your iPod. That was rather annoying for me. You can download some tagging programs, or do it manually in iTunes.
Also, it's nice to have an external HDD. I always keep movies and such on my iPod also. Its easy to take to friends houses and trade movies and such. I ordered a protective case for mine the same day I ordered my iPod, but it will get scratched regardless.
I've enjoyed the hell outta mine and I'm sure you will too. I've had my 3rd Generation 15 gb iPod for about a year now, and have had no problems so far. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
www.ipodlounge.com is the best site I've seen on the net. Every iPod related question can be answered there, along with reviews of accessories and such.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate it.
I think im gonna get the 20 gig one.
Also, how do you transfer? Is firewire just for charging the battery or can you transfer mp3s with that. Whats USB 2? I have usb ports, but i dont know if theyre USB 2...
as you can tell, im not good with PCs...
thanks again

You can transfer with Firewire or USB 2. But firewire charges also.
There are utilities you can download that will tell you what version USB you have/ Try looking for one of them at tucows. Unfortunately, I don't know any of their names.

I gave a lot of thought as to which I should buy...the iPOD or the Zen. I opted for the iPOD as a result of having read so many reports of the hard drive failing on people soon after they bought their zen unit. The battery life of the iPOD isn't a problem for me. I can replace the battery myself when it's all used up (it's a simple procedure) and right now I only have to charge it every couple of days. Everything else is absolutely peachy. My iPOD is the best £219 i've spent in years.

If you're buying a used one, then make sure not to get a generation 3 one. They suck. At least mine, and a few of my friends do too.

I havent heard of failing hard drives before. If that did happen shortly after buying it its just a simple act of taking it back and geting a new one. Glad you looked into it tho. To many people think that all there is out there are ipods and just rush out and get one with out doing a little research.

My iPod is a 3rd Generation. No trouble here.

I've had no problems whatsoever with my 3rd Generation 30gb iPod. It's been going strong for over a year and a half. I use my iPod every day and consistenly get about 8 hours of off & on use (where 6 of those hours are from continuous use) and still have some juice left over for the drive home. Of course, this is at mid-volume with no backlight & no equalizer. The only thing I let my iPod do is shuffle by song. Buying an iPod was one of the best gadgets I've ever bought with Tivo being a close second.
I've got a friend with a 40GB Creative Zen Nomad, and it's treated her just fine, especially since the headphone jack bug has been fixed, so I'm looking into getting one of those pretty soon.
The iPods are definitely sleeker, but I find the Zen's to be more user friendly.
Read: I'm too stupid to work that wheel-clicker thing.

After deliberating for quite a while, I have decided to buy a Creative Zen Touch.
It has much of the same features of the iPod, including a touch-senstive scroll device. In the end, it was the battery that screwed over the iPod for me. Where the iPod battery lasts around 12 hours per charge, the Zen Touch lasts 24. And this commotion over the iPod battery depleting within a few years of use is not comforting.

I really can't debate the battery issue since it is true. But, as someone said, if you treat it right it will last long. They are basic and if you go to www.apple.ca/batteries they have tips for saving the power to last for a hell of a long time.
I've had it for 4 months and have charged it less than 50 times
Although I can't complain too much since I got it for free :):)

iPods are awful. If there's even a miniscule speck of dust on a disc, there's a 3 second sound dropout during certain songs.
iTunes makes tracks sound flat and bass-less as well. Oh, and the headphones you get with it are shitty and the battery lasts 18 months (and it's non replaceable).

I'm guessing you are talking about ripping cd's using iTunes. That has absolutely nothing to do with an iPod. There are hundreds of programs to use to rip cd's, unless you want AAC or loseless.

Again, ripping cd's with iTunes and owning an iPod are two totally different things. The headphones aren't "great", but I didn't buy my iPod for the headphones. I use the stock buds, no problem with them. I've had mine for a little over a year, and have had no problem with the battery. I still get a good 8 hours. If it dies, I'll just replace it myself for about $20. You can send them to multiple places for them to replace it, but it's a very easy thing to do.

Except your music on iTunes is then imported onto the iPod.
If there are skips and pops on an iTunes track, will it still be present when uploaded to an iPod.

So? Don't use iTunes to make MP3s then. I don't. I use alternative software then use iTunes to import the tracks i've made onto my iPod. The sound is fucking ace. As for your statement re. the battery. Rubbish. There are many guides littered around the net explaining how to replace the battery. It's a very simple procedure. As for the headphones. So what? I fully intended to buy myself an expensive set as soon as possible and have now done so. The set I got with the unit weren't as bad as you suggest but with my new set i'm in hog heaven. If you are going to post about something please at least ensure that you have your facts straight. You were pretty much wrong about everything.

Sorry, I've just had bad experiences with iTunes and my first iPod. I suspect my iPod was an early model - the battery certainly ISN'T replaceable on my model, and I've tried in about 20 different places to get it replaced.
I didn't know about copying music from a different source and uploading it to iTunes! Thanks for the tip, I might just have to use that in the future.
Oh, and the headphones you get with it ARE shite. :D

Hmmm, thats crazy that that happens. I've taken at least four cds that were so scratched to shit they wouldnt play on any CD player, and ITunes played them (and transeferd them) as clean as the day I bought the CD

I agree. The prices of the accessories are really outrageous. The highest priced accessory I've bought so far was an in car cd player with auxilary input. Love having my iPod hard wired to my car's stereo.

Well, to my great surprise, I just received an IPOD. It's the 20 GB one. Anyway, I have a few questions, and I hope some of you can answer them for me.....
1. I already downloaded the iTunes software from the Apple website. Therefore, do I need to use the disc to download the software again, or not? Basically, is the iTunes stuff from the Apple website the same as what's in the disc?
2. Step by step, exactly how do you import ripped CD's and MP3's to iTunes, then transfer to the IPOD? Keep in mind, all of my music is windows media files. Does that matter?
3. Do I have to use the iTunes software to import my music and transfer my music to the IPOD? Is there any other alternative software I could use instead of iTunes?
That's all for now. Thanks in advance. :D

It is, however, very cheap and easy just to procure a plug-in called 'iTrip', which transmits your music into the radio.

No, you don't have to use iTunes to import your music, but you DO need it for transfer.

1. No. If I remember correctly, the only thing on the disk is iTunes and the firmware. You should be able to get the latter from the site as well(if I remember correctly)
2. You can't use WMA(windows media audio) in iTunes or your iPod. There is a program out there that converts WMA to mp3 or AAC, but I would just rerip my cd's to MP3 format.
3. You don't have to use iTunes to rip your cds. You can use any cd ripping software out there.(except Windows Media)
www.ipodlounge.com - The best site for anything iPod. I frequented that site for about 2 months before I purchased my iPod. Anything you need to know, you will be able to find there.

I really didn't want to go that route. I wouldn't have been satisfied with radio sound quality plus static. I know the aux input isn't cd quality, but it sure is close.
My main Xmas present this year was a 40 gig ipod. I've only got 6 albums on there right now but I'll be loading up most of my collection in due time. Fantastic gadget it is.

I must admit, I refused to buy into all the hype surrounding the IPOD at first. But now that I have one of my own, I realize that this is well deserving of all the hype and praise. The IPOD is an absolutely brilliant thing. I've only had it for two days, and I already love it to death. Thus far, I have 8 albums on there, plus 52 additional songs.

Dudeman - what did you do?? I messed mine up when I first got it, but I called the support desk and they helped me. This is what I did wrong: When I first set it up; it started automaticallly downloading EVERY FRIGGIN' SONG from my hard-drive into my iPod. I didn't want every friggin' song on it!! (I have over 8000.) So I wiped it clean to start over. (I think it's called resetting it.) What I forgot to do was to put the software back on it. SO it didn't know how to communicate with itunes. I have it set up now where I manually manage my music by dragging it from my music folder into itunes. I have about 2200+ songs on it now and about 20 playlists. (But you already know that from talking to me on AOL!) If you see me online message me and we'll see if I can help you.
As a sidenote: I LOVE MY iPod!!!! I also got the i-station for Christmas so I can listen to it at work: and the tuner so I can listen to it in my truck. It is the best gift a music lover could ever get!!!

it won't load music until you reinstall the software on the iPod. (I think I'm saying that right.) Without it, it doesn't know how to communicate w/ iTunes... (I'm not too computer savvy, but I hope that makes sense..?) You can also call the support line - which is what I ended up having to do - and they'll talk you through getting it going again. It's worth a try and that's what they're there for.

That sounds like the exact same thing that happened to my ipod. I can upload about 300-400 songs then it won't upload anymore after that. I've reloaded the software at least 10 times and it still does the same thing each time. I'm thinking it has something to do with my fire wire card though, I haven't checked though because I'm fucking tired of trying to fix it.

iPods friggin' suck.
My sister got one late last year, just like millions of people did around the holiday season, for one reason -- because it's cool to do so. It's a fashion statement. The silhouettes and white earphones have become instantly recognizable by people of all ages. I'd bet my last dollar that these people couldn't tell the difference between a 128 and a 192 kbit mp3 if their life depended on it. Like zombies, like sheep, they go out in hordes and buy the latest tool, a sign of the times, a way to feel young and hip. Meanwhile, I use my sis' iPod for 2 days and I can tell its a piece of junk. Beyond the sleek design and light weight, the battery life is piss-poor and its not very economical. For the price of an iPod mini (which I'd argue is completely worthless..), I went and bought a Creative Zen Xtra 40 GB player. Its only slightly heavier, which a lot of people make a big fuss about, but really.. when you're talking about mere ounces, its not going to make a dent in your pocket. I can barely feel it in my jacket when I'm walking. The battery life is un-fuckin-believable. I went on a long trip over the holidays and only recharged it a couple of times. It'll last 20-25 hours easy, even more if you function the backlight correctly. The MediaSource software is infinitely better than iTunes, less clunkier, quicker transferring of files and simpler to use. And lastly, the earplugs aren't fucking WHITE, which when I see on somebody now, only makes me recoil in disgust.
Don't even get me started on Apple has forever tarnished the image of one of my favorite bands, U2.. sellout whores.
iPods friggin' suck.

Ok...I didn't know all that. Can't be bothered going to check myself but I believe you. I don't agree that it's selling out though. Bands "selling out" is a tired concept. The entire "does being successful and making sound business decisions = sellout" argument got old years ago and i'm sick listening to upstart indie bands and their fans deriding everything that's successful just because they will never achieve a similar degree of success. But that's for another thread...one that I think i'll start real soon. :D

I thought it was just brilliant marketing on their part. How else can you get an old 80's era band to connect with a younger generation? Attach them to a cool new toy! I bought the new CD just because of that commercial. (Only the U2 iPod came w/ the new album. I bought the standard white one.)
I don't really think bands 'sell out' anymore. It seems like it's part of the package.

I'm just chiming in because I was thinking about saving up my pennies for a bose soundock which runs about $299, and I was wondering if anyone had any feedback on this item. I know there are cheaper speaker hookups, but it's hard not to associate the bose name with quality.

I got an i-logic iPod deck; it has two speakers and a big sub-woofer that folds down in back. I took it to work, so I don't know the full extent of it's potential (I need to listen to my music kinda low so I don't disturb my co-workers) but it's great! It charges the battery while it's playing too. I also got a Phillips portable speaker/receiver set that I can plug it into - that's in the bathroom. (Yeah, I know I got really spoiled this Christmas. I must've been a good girl!)

I'll be the first one to defend a band who have been accused of selling out based on changes in their music styles (Metallica, RHCP), but I cannot stand for one second bands who associate themselves with commercials, whether its Bob Dylan in Victoria's Secret ads or U2 here. Anyway, that's not really the issue. I've had my say on iPods. Just had to respond to that 'pre-teen mentality' remark, which I thought was uncalled for.

Alright... I got a 20 gig for xmas and it is awesome. Ive been using the sync method (i think its called) where it matches your itunes folder with whats on the ipod..
how can I change it to where I can manually add songs, because I deleted some songs off of my PC and I dont want them to get deleted off of the IPOD when I plug it in
thanks

What do you guys think of iPod Shuffle?
Funny story behind this. I hardly wanted one (despite the hype and praise it was getting), and had no intention to buy one. I however, had fully intended to purchase one for my bro's b-day. Called best buy every day here and there and to my surprise, they had them in monday (and still do!) so i couldnt resist having an unopened ipod on my desk for a week, so i decided to buy one and fuss with it.
I liked its simplicity and flashed based player, and the idea, but the lack of screen really killed me (even though i knew what i was in for).. simply said, its trying to make it a fad to cut production costs
it felt cheap in my hands, the sharp edges were annoying (like 1G and 2G iPod -> 3G smoothed out the edges), the battery life meter was v. vague, and worst of all, the Xfer speeds were awful. I think i read somewhere its 1.4MBPS now, while it takes like 6 minutes to fill a 512MB this is ridiculous in my opinion, especially after i have been spoiled with normal iPod speeds. I demand a 2005 product to utilise USB 2.0 technology a little more than by +.3 mbps
Hahah, just unacceptable IMO. and worst of all, i'm not an athlete, and manually picking songs was a bitch (if i pick random ones out of my 30GB collection, i end up getting LOTS of shit)
oh well , to each his own. glad i got this off my chest
and btw, i'm a hardcore iPod lover!
EDIT:forgot to include the funny part
Monday i bought two Shuffles, one for me and one for my bro -- both 512MB
Tuesday my parents both bought 1GB
Me and my father both returned ours, I returned mine because of the reasons listed above but my father never even opened his because after i declared i wouldnt stay hunched over a computer uploading stuff for him, he got angry and disapointed with the product (even though its not difficult to operate, he always finds a way to forget to click one button or something)
My mom opened hers, and I think she likes it.
My brother, TBA whether he likes it or not. We shall see this weekend
the funny part is, if you havent noticed
the parents get (had) the 1GB
the kids get (had) the 512MB
sold my 3G 15GB for 200 a couple of weeks ago, so now i'm twiddling my thumbs waiting to get greens on freeipods.com, waiting for release of 5G iPod, or 2G iPod mini.... dun dun dun

Man, whoever thought selling out applies to music now has got to get out of the 60's and get off the drugs. Yeah, it's called a JOB and it's called a LIVING, as in it's my JOB and I make a LIVING out of this. Jeez, you think that you get stuff handed to you because you're a musician? Bullshit. I play the piano, and my going rate is $30 an hour, so don't bitch and whine about this selling out shit, because I have to pay for college somehow.

I have over 800 songs, which takes up 3.24 GB. And I still have a lot of room left. It's going to take awhile to fill it up... ;)
Fellow IPOD users, I have a question for you all: can you use different headphones for the IPOD? I'm a little bored with the whole white headphones, and I'm looking for different headphones in a different color which can be used with the IPOD. And I could care less if it matches or not, I'm just tired of white. :D

Yes, to answer your question. Headphones are headphones when it comes to the IPOD, it doesnt matter what kind you plug into it.
I just got my Creative 40GB player today, and I'm loving it so far. I don't have any of my music on my computer, so it's kind of a bitch to load it all up, but the computer-to-player transfer is lightning fast.
Plus, it comes pre-loaded with 5 albums of classical music, which I really like, so that was a nice little surprise, too.

Hey Strider, did you buy the skins for the iPod? I have pink and blue. They kinda perk it up and make it shock-resistant if you drop it. I like the blue one best.
I've been on a quest for the perfect headphones myself: the ear buds don't fit right. I hate the wrap-around ones or any type that fit over your ears; and I really hate Sony headphones. So I'm still looking...

No, I haven't purchased any skins for the IPOD yet. I definitely want to, but I can't seem to find any. I've looked at Best Buy and other places, but I find nothing. I guess they're very popular. ;)

Right now, I've got around 900 songs on my Zen Touch using about 5 gigs.
Extra long battery life still kicks ass, even if the energy meter can be a bit off sometimes.
I've amassed 1500 songs so far...still got about half of my CD collection to go, however....

What are your top 25 most played songs?( on your I-pod)
B1rd_Po0p
02-14-2005, 11:59 AM
only 25?? Hmmm, my smallest playlist has 14 songs on it: the biggest one 120. I usually listen to the playlist that fits my mood: Lately it's been The Outfield or Duran Duran mixes; or Tears for Fears... Or Icehouse... Or... Well - apparently I don't really have a top 25... :D But it's usually music from the 80's... But I also have a techno mix; then one that has some White Zombie, Rage Against The Machine, Rammstein, etc: but then I also have my 60's and 70's classic rock playlist; and then the mushy stuff from the 70's, and my favorite 90's alternative stuff;... so I guess it just depends on the mood....

Woo, I love my secondhand 3G 40gig iPod! Over 200 songs, and miles above my old Minidisc player. I still don't see the big deal with the sound on an iPod being 'terrible'. Far from it. It sounds great!

I own a 40GB IPOD and I've had it for quite a while, probably over a year and I've definitly ntocied that the battery life for it has declined dramtically. It's really pretty annoying when you charge your IPOD all night and it then can't make it through 6 hours of school. Or it just dies when you get to school, but that only happened once.
I'm really pretty amazed at the sheer power of it. I mean, I look at my big computer and know it's 40GB and I look at this little itty bitty IPOD and know that it's the same. exact. amount of space on it. It's insanity. 40GB can hold upwards of 10,000 songs, and I bought it because I felt like who knows maybe I can keep it for the long run and just keep filling it up and filling it up. Let me break it to you, 10,000 songs is QUITE a lot. I think some people forget this. Only get this mammoth of an IPOD unless you are absolutely sure that you need it.
Itunes is a great service even for just listening to music, but putting music on your IPOD is a breeze of epic proportions. Pop a CD in, import it into your library (takes around a minute) and then drag that CD into the IPOD and all the songs will be put on within seconds. It's really incredible simple and very fast and efficent. When just listening to music the party shuffle option is pretty good and the songs stay organized easily. The design is pretty slick for ITUNES and when I'm using it I don't usually experience much slow down. Some downloadble skins would be pretty nice, but I'm sure that they're on the way.
Overall I enjoy mine, but I defintily think that over time your battery life begins to deteriarate and unfortuneately I think mine might even die soon. One thing to say is that this thing is a pretty tank machine, you drop it and it doesn't even flinch. Sure, it scratches VERY easily, actually really annoyingly easily but if you drop it nothing happens, it's pretty cool. I'm just pretty scared that my abttery is gonna be syaing bye bye soon and my whatever hundred dollars is gonna be a complete waste.

In the MediaSource Organizer that came with the player, add the song, right click on it, and select Convert. Follow instructions from there.
When I right-click, the Convert File Format option is not clickable. What in Davey Jones' locker is going on?

returning my 30GB ipod photo to sender. the click wheel center button is loose, the side is somewhat off-centered (although not too dramatically), and most importantly -- frequently it skips with VBR encoded tracks. I will get a replacement, and during this week or two without my photo, I'm contemplating whether I should sell it , buy a cheap mp3 player, and pocket the difference...
Not that iPod is bad,,, its just i've been using them for years. nothing new, or exciting about them. but some say,,,

I've only had my iPod for 5 months, but it's started to die on me already. Sometimes it freezes, then unfreezes, and refuses to play anything. I have about 39 GBs worth of music, but buying a 40 GB is not an option (no money). Thus, for £20, I bought a 10 GB from eBay. It's fairly old but it was still boxed and sealed), and quite large, but it's incredibly solid. Hasn't frozen on me once, I have only the best of the best on there, and has a fantastic battery life.

Anyone with generations 1-3 should be getting legal papers in the mail about the failing battery life. I read that Apple got sued in the paper and I got a thing in the mail asking me about my batt life. I can either send my 3rd generation in for batt replacement/new ipod or take a $50 voucher for any apple products. meh
