Well today as I was driving home from work I was really thinking about which albums I felt were the strongest from this years excellent output of music. These were the top ten albums I came up with:
1. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0001XARU4.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
After all was said and done I have to say after many many listens A Grand don't Come for Free is easily the greatest album to have slipped it's way into my clutches from 2004. It may be the best concept album I've ever heard and I after at least a hundred listens I'm still not sick of the story it tells.
2. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0002SDKG6.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
Good ol' Tom Waits comes around and releases another rusty treasure box of songs with his grovelly voice and stripped down charm. Plus you just can't go wrong with a song with Tom Waits beat boxing in the background. A Grand don't come for free may be the album of the year but Barn is my favorite song of the year.
3. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000U98KI.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
The Mountain Goats album: We Shall all be Healed is about as great as Lyrics can possibly get. John Darnielle is a poet. A damned fine one as well and this album is soaked with raw emotion, beauty, and some really good stories to tell. A beautiful album from start to finish.
4. http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0002LQ8CQ.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
The Go Team! Thunder Lightning Strike is just plain fun. Driving to work listening to this cd while downing sweet coffee is one of my favorite ways to start my morning lately. I pretty much owe this discovery to BCV because I had no idea who the hell these people were till she opened a thread on them. So thanks :)
5. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0002RUPH4.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
Yes thats right. William Shatner comes in and number 5. I picked up this album at first just because I really liked him covering Common People. At first it was a little cheesy but then I realized there were some really beautiful songs and covers thrown into the mix. His cover of That's me Trying still gives me a lump in my throat when I hear it. The acclaim shouldn't all go to Shatner because Ben Folds did a really really good job arranging the cd with songs that would work for the man. Even at it's cheesiness this cd is fun to listen too. I think Psychocandy opened up the thread for this before it got released and got my interest peaked. So that's another thank you to a schmoe. :). Seriously who needs music magazines when you have the schmoes.
I have to go to an Iron and Wine show now but I'll be back with the bottom 5 tomoorow this was taking longer than I thought.

this album really kicked me in the balls first time i heard it,its a long time since an album really jumped out and grabbed me as much as this one did,my favourate album of the year containing the best song of the year "all these things that ive done".
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0002QCBFO.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
since leaving the roses ian has quietly went about his buissness of making pretty decent tunes, but this album for me took his solo work to a higher level, there is not a weak track on it and there are a couple of real corkers,he seams to have found a new peace this last 12 months and put a lot of demons to bed and he is sounding a lot better for it.
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0001BH15K.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
one of this years biggest success's a great album that is chock full of anthems to sing along too.
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0002QXS92.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
a welcome return from one of my favourate bands, who at last seam to be getting the recognition they have deserved.
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0001Z2RUK.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
a great debut album full of great tunes.
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0002LI58Q.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
another debut album, this is another album that really kicked me hard the first time i heard it,lots of great stand out tracks gutsy music and singalong lyrics.
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0006AZMSY.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
his best solo album by a long way for me.
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0002HV4RE.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
pete doherty may be one of the most fucked up individuals in music today, but boy can the man rock and write a great tune,he is a potential kurt cbain in the making i just hope he does'nt waste his talent in the same way.
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00029R5OI.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
this has been a real grower for me latley,it took a while to get into it fully but am now really starting to appreciate the potential these boys have.
http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0001ZXMUO.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
am struggling a bit for no 10 but i have enjoyed this album its a little cheesy but a lot of fun.

K-Os - Joyful Rebellion
- probly one of the best rap albums I have heard in a long while, every song is different and funky, donno if the states have heard of him yet, or anywhere else, but he is starting to get big here in Canada.

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0002Y4T8I.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
Fatboy Slim - Palookaville
- A very fun listen, I don't think I can ever get bored of a Fatboy Slim disk
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0001AP12G.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
Kanye West - College Dropout
- Say waht you want about him whining about how he didn't win at the AMA's, fuck man HE SHOULD HAVE! a great debut from the great producer

O.k. Here are my bottom 5:
6. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0001EFUJ6.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
Misery is a butterfly is Blonde redhead's finest album to date. The title track may be one of the prettiest songs of all time and this album showed a ton of growth without losing any of the bands charm.
7. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0001BVI86.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
TV on the radios new album was everything I expected it to be. Which was a whole lot. After falling in love with young liars I had really high expecations for this album and they delivered on every count. I love music that paves new roads that haven't been tromped down before and this album is a perfect example of a band making music outside the box.
8. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0001IU934.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
Lou Reeds recent live release is the best album he's put out since Berlin. The band he chose to back him up on that tour perfectly complimented every single one of his songs. Actually my favorite song off the album is when he has his back up singer take the lead vocals on Stephanie Says. It made a great song pretty much perfect.
9. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0002PD3HU.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
Iterpol must have made a deal with the devil to make two such really good albums. While this album hasn't stood up to the test of time like turn on the bright lights it's still a really really good album. The imagery the lyrics in this album conjur for me are fantastic.
10. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0001WB696.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
It's the moz. He can do no wrong. :)

No. Actually, I thought I'd just join in with everyone else and post what I thought were the best albums of the year. If that makes me gay, then so be it. I also watched and enjoyed "A Clay Aiken Christmas" tonight on NBC. Any comments on that one?

- Even though this WAS released last year (and I did pick it up last year, too), there was still singles released from it, so I included it. I have to say, that I enjoy this blink-182 more then the previous, and I kind of like their new sound. I do wish that in the next album, that Mark would sing more.
2. Coheed and Cambria 'In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3' (9/10)

You know, I figured you'd like Mastodon. I think I reccommended them to you in that metal thread you made a while back. I'm pretty shocked at the Encore mention for you Heart Collector. I thought while the album had some good songs on it, it didn't stack up to his previous three at all. "Ass Like That" has to be the lamest song ever recorded as well.
I've pretty much ignored the hip hop genre this year. I really need to pick up Madvillian, De La Soul, Kanye, and Dizzee.
