I just got done talking to a friend who was at the show. He said a fan ran up on stage and shot him in the head numerous times, even when he was on the ground the gunman continued to shoot Dimebag. His brother, Vinnie, was also killed along with a few other fans before a police officer killed him. Very, very sad, as I was a big Pantera fan years ago.

Both are dead? Man that sucks. I never was a big fan of Pantera, but Dimebag was a fucking great guitar player. And his brother kicked ass at drums.

It's a strange, strange way to go.
Plus, I haven't hardly heard anything about it. It's terrible.
He made some of the most entertaining guitar columns in GUITAR ONE ( or whatever it is) magazine. I actually was going to start reading it each month because he was so fun to read. That's terrible.

Unfortunately for us, MTV always ignore anybody with REAL musical talent these days so I'm sure this story will come at the end of a fucking segment about some teeny bopper. Rest in Peace Dimebag.
P.S. A bullet was waaayy too quick for the fucker that did this. He deserved to suffer.
My thoughts go out to the family and the band. I liked Pantera, and I think Damage Plan was on their way. It's just sick what people will do for attention. This gunman is no exception.
"Police spokeswoman Sherry Mercurio identified three of the victims of Wednesday's shooting as Abbott, who played for the band Damageplan, and two other men, Nathan Bray and Erin Halk."

I cannot explain the grief, agony, and sympathy for the death of Dimebag, I have been a fan of Pantera and Damageplan for a longtime, and considered Dime to be the funnest and best person/guitarist to have ever graced music.
If you ever get a chance, watch Pantera's Vulgar Videos, and Pantera 3(home videos) they will show you exactly what kind of person Dime was, he was a prankster, a showman, and he loved his family and fans.
I will never forget Dimebag Darrell, and all that he gave to us, the fans.
thanks Dime, you will not be forgotten.
on a sidenote, Vinnie Paul was not killed, he was shot, but survived.

I can't fucking believe this! Where the fuck was security? How can an armed man just walk on stage and kill four people? Fucking bullshit. I can't imagine how horrifying it must have been to see it happen. Out of fucking nowhere. Needless to say, I'm listening to Pantera right now, and I will be for the rest of the day. Five shots at point blank. Goddamn.
Contrary to rumors, no one else from Damageplan was murdered. It was reported earlier that Bobzilla was also killed, but the body count has since lowered to four. The amoral motherfuck responsible for this was just seeking infamy (it was the anniversary of John Lennon's death, after all), and unfortunately, he'll get it.

posted this in the celeb forum... but this thread seems to be where all the dimebag fans are at, ,so ima just cut n paste what i wrote over there:
what the fuck is the world fucking coming to.
One of the best fucking guitarists to ever live (and if you refute that just listen to Cemetary Gates, Cowboys From Hell, ,Fucking Hostile and every song ever done by PANTERA)
we may have lost Brando and other big name celebrities this year... but this is the celebrity death that hits me the most, cuz i have been a fan of PANTERA sine as long as i could remember and DAMAGEPLAN from its conception. DIMEBAG was up there w/ Hammet (Metallica) and Hendrix in my book.
Here is the article from IWON.com
shit fuckin sucks man,
Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, who was fatally shot during a performance, was a frenetic, ear-shattering guitarist whose riffs for the Grammy-nominated Pantera and more recently Damageplan were a heavy-metal staple. He was 38.
Abbott was shot to death as he took the stage Wednesday with Damageplan at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio.
Three other people also were fatally shot before a police officer shot the gunman to death.
The deaths shook the heavy-metal music industry, and fans flooded Web sites to share their grief.
"It's going to be hard for people outside the metal world to understand, but this is as important as losing a president," said Mark Hunter, lead singer of the metal band Chimaira.
Abbott "changed the way metal music was written with his guitar playing. I don't know anybody in a band who hasn't stolen a few guitar riffs from him," he said.
A fan posting on the band's Web site read, "This is the worst day in metal history."
Pantera's fast, aggressive sound attracted a massive cult following in the early 1990s, and its third release, "Far Beyond Driven," debuted at No. 1 in 1994, surprising chart-watchers and critics alike. Other hit albums were "The Great Southern Trendkill" and "Reinventing The Steel," and a song by the band became the Dallas Stars hockey team's signature tune in 1999.
"When you think of '90s heavy metal or hard rock, Pantera is one of these seminal bands. They are quoted today as influences by many bands," said Tom Calderone, MTV's executive vice president. "Hard rock has lost a legendary guitar player."
Pantera was nominated for Grammies for best metal performance in 1995 for "I'm Broken" and in 2001 for "Revolution Is My Name." The video "The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys' Vulgar Hits" hit the top 10 for music-video sales earlier this year; another video, "3-Watch It Go," went top-10 in 1998.
Darrell Abbott and his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott, left Pantera last year and produced Damageplan's debut album, "New Found Power," which was released in February.
Born in Dallas on Aug. 20, 1966, Darrell Abbott was introduced to music by his father, country songwriter Jerry Abbott, who owned a recording studio. The younger Abbott gravitated toward rock music and the styles of Tony Iommi, Ace Frehley, Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhodes.
The Abbott brothers and bassist Rex Rocker formed Pantera in 1983. Then Abbott went by the name "Diamond Darrell." Abbott later began to use the moniker "Dimebag" and was often referred to as "Dime" by fans and friends.
Early on, Pantera leaned more toward hard rock, but the band began to develop a heavier sound after singer Phil Anselmo joined in 1987. After releasing a few independent albums, Pantera signed with Atlantic Records in 1990. It was also the period when Abbott came into his own as a guitar player, developing his heavy, frenetic sound that can first be heard on the 1990 album "Cowboys from Hell" and on the 1992 standout "Vulgar Display of Power."
Pantera's manager Kim Zide-Davis, who worked with Abbott from 1994 to 2003, called him larger than life, and said she often told the guitarist he was "a living cartoon character."
"He would do things that you wouldn't believe a real person was capable of," she said.
But she said Abbott also had a sweet and caring side that many people never knew.
"Everything you saw from him was real. That was who he was," she said. "He lived and unfortunately died by his guitar. What you saw on stage was his enjoyment."
In recent years, Abbott also made recording appearances on Nickleback's "The Long Road" and with one of his influences, KISS' Frehley.
Besides the Abbott brothers, Damageplan also includes vocalist Patrick Lachman and bassist Bob Zilla.
a huge RIP

DAMAGEPLAN - Concert Shooting Update

DAMAGEPLAN Concert Shooting Update: Gunman Blames Dimebag For Breaking Up PANTERA.
Australia’s The Age (www.theage.com.au) has issued the following report:
An enraged fan has walked onstage in a crowded US nightclub during a heavy metal concert and opened fire on the band and the audience, killing five people - including at least one band member - before being shot dead by police.
Members of DAMAGEPLAN had just begun their first song at the metal music venue Alrosa Villa when the man opened fire, initially targeting guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, a former member of PANTERA, one of the world's biggest metal bands, then his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul, another former Pantera member.
"I was up close to the stage on the side where Dimebag was playing," wrote one fan on the band's website. "Then I saw the guy jump out of the crowd onto the stage. He was yelling something about how 'You broke up Pantera, you ruined my life. What about Phil?' " - referring to Phil Anselmo, the Pantera singer who did not join Damageplan. " 'He needs heroin money.'
"Then I saw the gun and he shot DBD (Dimebag) right in the head. When DBD went down he kept shooting. Then he turned around for (other band members) Bob Zilla, then Vinnie.
"The whole time I thought it was part of the show. I had blood on me I was so close. I'm still freakin' out here...
"The cops showed up and then people started sayin' that DBD was killed...
There's some blood on my ticket stub, so I'm going to sell it on eBay or keep it or something. I know DBD is in heaven (or ripping some mad riffs in hell)."
The other dead have not been named.
Other notices on the website - which noted that objects were already for sale on eBay - were not so heartfelt. "Personally, I want a refund," wrote one. Someone else, under the name h8breedsh8, wrote: "Hate to say it, but when your lyrics and lifestyle glorify hate and death and misery endlessly, as every band that plays this club does, this type of #### is inevitable. Plenty of suicides were blamed on Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult back in the '70s. Only diff is that now the psychos take a bunch of people with them!"
Pantera toured Australia twice, in 1994 and in 1996. It split in 2003 and siblings Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul formed Damageplan.
Source: www.theage.com.au / www.bravewords.com
So the reason that he killed him was that he left Pantera.
That's really, really fucked up.
He was pissed because Pantera broke up?! WHAT THE FUCK! Did he think he could convince them to get back together by shooting them? People are such fucking idiots. This one in particular tops the list.

god damn man... he did it cuz he "Broke p Pantera"?!?
so does this mean in a month or so we can expect the same shit to happen to Audioslave saying that Tom Morello "Broke Up" Rage Against The Machine? or how about at an Alterbridge concert when some fucking sick cocksucking fuck gets on stage n says they "Broke Up" Creed (even though i doubt anyone i sreally too pissed about the breakup of creed)
sick fucker... couldnt have just turned the barrel on himself... same thing i said back when i found out Phil Hartman was murdered. These people need to just kill themselves. They are sick fucks and they desrve to die and suffer before death. Dont anyone deserve what Dimebag got. or the fans who were just there to see a bad ass band with one of the greatest guitarists to ever live, and now they are fuckng dead.
I just watched the news... they showed a few pics of cops out side the club and played 1 911 call. After barely a 2 minute segment, they move on to other news. WTF... thats the type of respect a legend in the metal community gets?? If Justin Timbershit or one of these stupid shitty pop/ rap stars were to die, it would be fuckin National News. All cameras would be tehre, it would be covered on every channel on every station. But Dimebag gets a 2 minute spot?? Fucking Horseshit
I just hope Phil Anselmo can put his so called "HATE" for Dimebag aside and show some emotion and i guess support (im not sure what the right word is) for this fuckin tragedy. I mean they were together for what was it, like 10 years, and created some of the best music ever. Cemetary Gates remains one of my all time favorite songs.

Fuck man .... I can't even begin to comprehend this shit ... this really breaks my heart that someone as awsome as Dime was gunned down point blank. This is truely Metals biggest tragedy since Cliff Burtons Death. I'm sorry (to the luckily dead assailant) that you were a fucked up asshole, but if you have problems to this extent, you shoot your own head offf ..boom..problem solved. Now we all have to grieve the death of this icon WAY earlier than we would have ever had to. Dimebag was the greatest Guitar player alive.

My local rock radio station does a 6 Pack at 6 (6 most requested of the day), but today they played all Pantera/Damageplan songs in honor. The last song they played was Cowboys from Hell, and the DJ said it was the song that got him into metal, and that it made the hairs stand on his arm the first time he heard it, and he started crying on air. It was pretty sad.
So when I got home (I had been listening in the car), I played my favorite Pantera songs in honor, and it made me feel weird as well. I didnt cry like the radio DJ did, but it did make me extremely sad.

For my 3 cents...
This news is just leaving me speechless. I have been a Pantera fan for many...many years. As I got older my love for the heavier side of music has become less and less...but...Pantera was a big part of my life for a long time. And much like many musicians out there, Dimebag did for music like only few have before, or ever will. Much like Jimmy Page, he changed the way the guitar is played..it may be to a different aspect in some peoples eyes, but the bottom like is this one man changed the way "metal" guitar was played and the whole band changed this one type of music's future.
The brutality of these murders is sickining.
My prayers are with everyone involved and esp with Vinnie because what he has just gone through is beyond anything I can imagine or even what to try...just insane things.

I have never listened to Pantera, chances are I never will. I haven't even heard any of their songs, nor have I heard any by Damageplan. However, I can't believe how coldhearted this person is. Asking for a refund? Have they no respect for anyone or anything? It's so ridiculous that they could be that selfish. RIP, Mr. Darrell.

If I had made a list of Crazy Things That Will Never Happen, Dimebag Darrell getting shot and killed during a show would`ve been among the Top 3.
People outside the metal community don`t realize it (and likely don`t care), but this guy wasn`t just a "popular guitar player". He was a GOD to metalheads and rockers everywhere.
Surprisingly, this news has been all over the mainstream media. Hell, I first heard about this during a news break on my local conservative talk-radio station!!
What a lousy year for the music world. First Rick James, then ODB, and now THIS. [And no, I wasn`t being sarcastic just there. I liked Rick James and Ol` Dirty too].
Hot-Handed Fury

Of all the popular musicians who have died, I don't think ANY of them have been murdered in cold blood while ON STAGE performing for their fans.
Hendrix choked on his own vommit...
Randy Rhoads, plane crash...
Stevie Ray Vaughan, helicopter crash...
Cliff Burton, horrible bus crash....
But, for Dimebag Darrell, some lunatic jumped on stage and shot him point blank 5 times....This is just senseless...I'm still in shock.
DD was one the coolest & nicest guys ever, and not to mention one of the true pioneers of Heavy Metal guitar playing.
His legato licks, great vibrato, screaming harmonics, and crushing riffs were an inspiration for millions of metal fans everywhere.
I'm still struggling to learn that little harmonic intro to "Heresy", and now I'm gonna try and get my band to cover "Cemetary Gates".
I just can't believe this is real...I was hoping this was simply an internet hoax....
RIP "Diamond/Dimebag" Darrell Abbott

One question. Where the hell was security at this fucking venue?!? I mean, how the hell does some nutjob just walk right into the club with a fucking gun and kill one of the most respected and influential artists in metal? I'm sorry, but this will make it very difficult for me to enjoy myself at a concert again, not to mention that this was extremely close to where I live and had things worked out differently, I might have been there. That scares the hell out of me.
Also, what the fuck was wrong with this guy? I read this news story online that said that the dude kept talking about how he was going to sue Pantera for stealing his songs. Wacko!
All I can say is what a tragedy for the entire heavy metal community.
RIP, Dime.

Yeah, I listened to "Floods" yesterday, and it ripped my guts out. I wonder if they'll play "Hollow" at Dime's funeral. Some of the lyrics are eerily apropos.
"We seemed like brothers
Talked for hours last month
About what we wanna be
I sit now with his hand in mine
But I know he can't feel..."
"I shake my fists at skies above
Mad at God
He as hollow as I converse
I wish he'd waken from this curse
Hear my words before it's through
I want to come in after you
My best friend "
I bet Anselmo is kicking the shit out of himself right about now.
I'd bet Anselmo is falling apart, right now. Things were so wrong when they broke up.

Another fucked up thing is that the Alrosa has always had a reputation for being one of the coolest places to go to as long as you showed up there to rock.
A year and a half ago an old buddy was desperately trying to get me to go there, and was telling me how awesome of a club it was, I can't believe something like this had to happen.
In a related story, there was an Ozzfest in Ohio this year, and a friend of mine said some band played that had members of Pantera in it. The crowd was going apeshit and being real mean to the band. He said the leader singer started saying "What the fuck is wrong with you people?! You're the worst fucking audience we've ever had!"
Well, the boos kept up, and then he screamed "When will you all fucking learn that Pantera is dead!!!" The band finally quit playing amist all the boos and left the stage.
Has there always been this hostility since the band broke up? And if someone knows, is the band I speak of at Ozzfest Damageplan?

Yes, it was Damageplan, formed by Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell. I didn't realize how hostile people were about it until this happened. But nobody knew what went on between band maembers but the band themselves. Still, some people evidently didn't want to let it go. Proof positive that audiences can be real fuckheads.

I wasn't a huge Pantera fan, but I tought Dimebag was a great guitar player. One of the best to come out during the '90s. A man who loved music and everything about it.
We've lost a great man.
Damn. :(
R.I.P, good sir!!!
Couldnt say it any better...a shock to the system.

No, it's Superjoint Ritual. Damageplan wasn't on the roster this past year. SJR is fronted by former Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo.

Nope.
Bloody hell. I thought Anselmo had turned into too much of an asshole to have a band. Damage Plan was supposed to be here in Kansas City with Drowning Pool on Saturday for Twisted Christmas. I know they were touring with different acts so they could get some attention. I guess Anselmo has to work, too.
