I'm a kaiju fanatic, and I enjoyed Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster (a.k.a. Godzilla vs. Hedorah) as a nascent horror fiend, but it took me two sittings to finish it just recently. Even on the second viewing, I nodded off without much of a fight. The child "actor" is a canker sore, the pace is sludgy, and the battle sequences are distressingly languid. The film does have sunny spots. Hedorah is a cool foe, the cheese is majestic, and it seems to have been written by coked-out malformations (The cartoon interludes? The psychedelic nightclub?). This flick never wanted to end, and I've already forgotten it. Admittedly, it deviated from the norm, but so did Ed Gein.

I just saw this and the other 4 Godzilla films that just got rerealesed at a few different stores. They want $20.00 a piece. I dont think it csot $20 to make them. I 'll but some of them when they are like $9.00.

$20 is unreasonable. The transfer is surprisingly impeccable, but if it's not filled to the brim with extras, it should cost $15 at the most. I rented this, and I'll also be renting Godzilla vs. Gigan. Thank Satan for Netflix (no, I don't work for them).

i saw this a few years ago and the only thing about it i remember is being completely bored, something that i find happens with most of the japanese Godzilla films

Say what you will, but that "Save the Earth Song" is the greatest musical creation since Flashdance.

Another in a line of the nice "Godzilla" films, that suffer from painful mediocrity. I recommend this one for the 'extremist' of all the 'extreme' Godzilla completist only..."The Smog Monster" entry, is without a doubt a sleeping pill...which should have been called;

"Godzilla vs the Snooze Monster" !!!

The only other "Godzilla" film even more painful to watch, is the one with the kid on monster island! Baby Godzilla actually talks to him, in this voice that sounds like the dog on that religious clokey/ clay-animation TV show "Davey and Goliath"!

This still can't possibly be worse than the modern Matthew Broderick version. :p

That would be Godzilla's Revenge and, honestly, that's the only way to actually enjoy that movie.

Godzilla's Revenge is easily the worst G-romp I've seen, but it wasn't made with us in mind. It's just a pulpy melange tailor-made for little ones (although I hated it as a child as well).

I just watched Godzilla against Mechagodzilla 2002. It wasnt as bad as the reviews I had read about it. Some good action and fight scenes. They are some big plot holes and cheesey parts but overall a good G film.

You haven't seen Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla?

Not in its entirety. The Heisei series has delivered a few abortions, I grant you that.

Oh come on, Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla wasn't that bad. Yes, it was a hideously atrocious attempt to make Godzilla a hero again, but it was funny because of the giant penguin and some decent fight scenes. Enjoying Godzilla's Revenge to the point of perfection must require some sort of special high recreational drugs won't allow.

Even heckling that movie becomes a chore after a while. The only G-romp I dislike more is Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla (1993).

I just picked up Godzilla Tokyo SOS. Its not bad. Godzilla has a plastic look to him though. It has some good fight scenes though alot of them are taken from the Godzilla vs. Mothra movie.

Godzilla vs the sea monster comes out on DVD soon- is it any good ? I haven't seen it in years.

I haven't seen G Vs Sea Monster in a long time, but when I was a kid I would turn it off when Godzilla plays boulder baseball with the sea monster.

Gluttony is right on the money, with his comments on Godzilla VS Space Godzilla. It is easily enjoyable, lets give some credit to the production design on the current look of the latest Big 'G' Flicks. Godzilla 2000, showed signs of an over all improvement in the visual effects department...as opposed to the very early films of the 50s to the 70's.

Like a fine wine 'Godzilla' only gets better with age!:)

To hell with the americanized Godzilla...long live the REAL O.G!

Its also cool that G uses his radioactive fire breath more. In some of the old ones he would only use it 2 or 3 times the whole film. Also when another monster would start beatin him down he would always try to punch his way back- he would hardly ever use his fire to get the upper hand again.

It takes awhile to get going, but it's certainly entertaining. I haven't seen it in years either, though. It would be fun to revisit.

Amen to that! But I have to admit, the animated series was quite enjoyable. A HUGE improvement over the film that inspired it. At least the animators were trying to keep the spirit of the Toho G in the animated form.

The classic(?) Godzilla vs the smog monster is on sci-fi this sat. morning at 9:00. Followed by Godzilla vs. Mothra. I gotta dust off my VCR.

I still find Godzilla vs. Destroyah to be the best Godzilla film I've ever seen. Too bad Destroyah was never used again. :(
