Okay, I gotta admit I was really excited when I heard they were going to remake this with Christopher Walken as "Willy Wonka". Then my excitement dropped when they started fishing around replacement actors to fill that role like "Nicholas Cage" (insert laughter here, I kid you not), and then it rose again when Johnny Depp stepped up to take the role.
I haven't done much research on the movie since, but I guess it's finished filming as I finally saw a trailer for this movie the other day.
Charlie & The Chocolate Factory Trailer (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0367594/trailers)
First of all, what's with the annoying music (sung by Oompa Loompas)? It's not even wacky.. it's just plain annoying. And then Johnny Depp appears.... as Michael Jackson!
The hair.. the bleached skin.. the bleached teeth... the goggles. It was scary... I mean, I wasn't even laughing at this point, I was seriously disturbed. What was Tim Burton thinking? Let's make the kindly owner of the chocolate factory look like... a child molester! What kind of a fucking Willy Wonka adaptation is this? A sarcastic one?
It's nothing like the Roald Dahl version I remember, or to a lesser extent, the Gene Wilder classic. This looks like a disaster-ala-Cat In The Hat.
After junk adaptations like "Matilda" and "The Witches" and "James & The Giant Peach", poor Roald Dah must be spinning in his grave at this point.

Just sifted from IMDB's Trivia Facts and also mentioned on AMC's DVD TV Broadcast of the movie.....
Roald Dahl hated the film.
Like I mentioned in the MANY MANY threads popping up on this, Tim Burton's take on this is leaning MORE towards the book and the Dahl Family (because Roald passed on in 1980 I believe) approved 200% with Burton as director for the movie. The teaser trailer is a TEASER so I am anxious to see the actual trailer... :D

I'm really excited for this movie. I think Tim Burton being the director of this project just adds the extra ounce of anticipation.

I know Tim Burton creates crazy characters (ie. Beetlejuice, Scissorhands, etc) - but Roald Dahl CREATED Willy Wonka. In the book he was merely eccentric, almost loving/looking for a son-figure to take over the factory. Not creepy.
One look at Depp's get-up in the trailer immediately gave me creepy visions of Michael Jackson. I mean, what's with the wig? The lipstick? Powdered face/bleached skin? If people can't get that connection out of their heads, they're not going to fall in love with this one.
I'm willing to give this a fair go when it comes out, but based upon the trailer alone, it doesn't look like anything Roald Dahl had in mind when he wrote the book.

Based on what Ive seen Id say it will be a combination of both things....a homage to Gene Wilders flick and being true to the book.
I for one loved the teaser trailer, and I think that Depps look is creepy yes, but thats the way Wonka is supposed to be. He is a trickster....he is a joker a magician...and if you remember correctly Wilders Wonka wasnt exactly lovable.
He was enigmatic, weird, elusive and tricky. Yeah he was likable in a strange sort of way but it wasnt hes predominant quality.

If you read the book you would know that Willy Wonka turned into a Boo Radley-esque character, he never left his factory (pale skin), he had almost no connection with the outside world, when he first sees the sun from such a long time he needs sunglasses, the movie should have him adjusting to meeting people again after being cooped up in his factory, he becomes a Machael Jackson like character if you want to say. Anyway, I think it's looking good, I don't like teh look of Violet and Veruca doesn't look like a big enough cunt, and the OOMPAS look like shit (they're orange but it's not florescent!), but I think after watching teh movie I'll be able to forgive Burton, it looks good, and Depp looks great (I'm sad it's not a musical).

looks pretty weird and so in turn funky to me. im willing to give it a chance, it is Tim Burton after all.
Tim Burton and Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands produced a masterpiece. Despite not being a character written by Burton, Willy Wonker is an amicable fellow full of quirks and eccentricities.....which is exactly what Depp pulls off best.
il catch the full trailer and go from there i think. looking good so far though.
~~~~
James and the Giant Peach was a good film, very heart warming.
The Witches, just down right freaky.
Matilda.........ok im willing to agree that was a poor film.
Funnily enough, I actually think Tim Burton could have done wonders if he had directed "Cat In The Hat".
I'm really looking forward to this (gotta agree with The King of Masks - there's something strangely similar to the world of Burton and the world of Suess. Take a look at The Nightmare Before Christmas.) Anyway, I think a teaser is just a little too brief to draw a conclusion from, but this teaser has me intrigued, so I'll be there.
hey who said they all died, it was just a possibility for most of them.
It's been a while (damn, I just realised how old I am!) since I read the book, but I do recall one child disappearing in the chocolate river and one getting zapped into Wonkavision, and didn't another blow up like a balloon? Unless Wonka's indifference to their fate is because he knows the OompaLompa's (sp?) will retrieve them, his reaction to their farewell from the Chocolate Factory is mild to say the least. Don't get me wrong, Wonka IS one of my favourite childhood characters (I always wished it was me taking off in the Glass Elevator), but all-benevolent he was not.
It was hinted at that they died.
Dahl was a much darker writer than many people think. His many adult novels were extremely clever.
Regardless, even if they didn't die, just consider their fates in the film:
Augustus Gloop is shot out of a tube at a startling rate, much like a big fat chocolate-filled bullet in a gun.
Veruca Salt falls down a trapdoor where, according to Wonka, there's a good chance she'll end up in a furnace.
Violet Beuregarde turns into a blueberry and is taken away to be popped.
The only one who doesn't die for sure is Mike Teevee, but he's a fucking inch tall. Hardly good news for him.
And yet Wonka doesn't bat an eyelid at any point, except for when his chocolate's in danger (Augustus). Whether the Oompa-Loompas can help them or not, this hadn't happened to Wonka before (after all, he hadn't let people into his factory until that point).
Youre right they all appeared like they were going to die, but I believe that this was just Wonka playing with the parents mind. In fact there is a scene just before they are going to get on the glass elevator thingy where they have this bit of conversation:
Charlie Bucket: "Mr. Wonka, what's gonna happen to the other kids? Augustus, Veruca?"
Willy Wonka: "My dear boy, I promise you they'll be quite all right. When they leave here, they'll be completely restored to their normal, terrible old selves. But maybe they'll be a little bit wiser for the wear. Anyway, don't worry about them."
Or in other words Dahl was saying, ...
"Don't worry parents, all the children are safe. I didn't kill them off, see? This is a good children's book, safe to read, and *cough*BUY*cough*, and enjoy with your kids and their kids. I'm not demented. Really."
I think that's just a cop out, probably added by the publisher, to take off some of the darkness of the story. Without that, the story is quite demented. It just seems like an easy way out of a problem that might have scared away parents trying to buy a safer story for their children to enjoy, but not be scared by.
Actually that quote is from the movie. Ive never read Dahls book. I do know that the book has a slightly different ending. I dont know what happens to the kids in the book.
That whole ending with Charlie flying on that elevator with Wonka and Grandpa isnt in the book. At least thats what I understood from the making of docs on the DVD.
Ok, so I saw the trailer for this one (I'm a bit behind yea, I know) and It looks like it'll be a good film. With Burton and Depp you really can't go wrong and I absolutely love Wonka's outfit! The poster for some reason or another gives me a creepy vibe. I'm not sure what it is.
The music in the trailer was a bit annoying but after the second or third viewing it gets stuck in your head. I've been humming it all night.
Not to be too picky or anything, but the movie will be called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, like the book; not Willy Wonka - like the Gene Wilder flick.
That's one of the first differences I noticed when they announced a new movie - the title will be that of the book's.
I was seriously disturbed. What was Tim Burton thinking?
Tim Burton is disturbing thats what makes him so friggin awsome. and as stated before. the way he looks and act is supposedly how the writer of the book wanted him to look and act. this movie looks far better than the one with gene wilder.
I think they did have an elevator at the end. The next book was called Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator and I believe it picked up right where the first one left off. In the elevator, Charlie can see the other four kids. They aren't dead, but they are deformed. Mike is really skinny and about 10 feet tall, Violet is a blueberry, Veruca is covered in garbage (not a bad alternative, really) and I forgot how Augustus fared. So even though the film version assures us the kids are fine, we never actually see them...
At best, this movie is going to be genius. At worst, it'll be bizarre enough to be interesting.
I'm in line either way.
Heres the deal:
Johnny Depp & Tim Burton have NEVER made a bad film...
Edward Scisserhands
Ed Wood
Sleepy Hollow
Now comes..Charlie & the Chocolate Factory..its gonna rock...I have a feeling that those who are or will be knocking it are coming with pre concieved notions of Gene Wilders Willy Wonka and any version must follow the old one.
I know how some people are sick and tired of comparing this TIM BURTON movie to the old Gene Wilder classic.
What I'm sick of is other people saying that it will be NOTHING LIKE THE OLDER MOVIE, and how it doesn't have any influence AT ALL to this new movie.
This is utterly untrue when you look at the teaser, and then do a flashback to all those hundreds of times you watched the older movie as a kid...
The 'television' room entirely in white with white clothes, the Wonkabars looking strangely similar to the previous movie's bars, Wonka's colorful outfit with a tophat (albeit a different shade), most of the kids are dressed very closely to the old version, the candy village looks a lot like the old one but slightly DR. SUESS'-ized for Burton's version, Augustus drowning in a sea of chocolate...
There are a LOT of VISUAL similarities to the older movie, and I know many people keep saying "This is not the same movie, this is not the same movie, Roald Dahl hated that version, this version will be darker and based off of the book more than that one, yadda yadda yadda..."
I understand that, but at the same time my eyes can also see what's flashing before me onscreen. Perhaps this movie will be very very different (darker, and meaner I hope) from the Gene Wilder classic, but at the same time there's no WAY that someone can not say there aren't visual similarities to the older movie. That's just plain denial.
So please, people... if someone doesn't like the teaser and also makes any mention whatsoever of the older movie, bear in mind that MANY MANY OTHER PEOPLE OUT THERE making these statements already know that Tim Burton's movie is supposed to be an entirely different beast. But also make mention of the fact that a lot of this new version - from the teaser and production photos - has strong references to the older movie, at least in how it LOOKS.
I'm looking forward to this. Tim Burton is great, Johnny Depp is just awesome. I rather liked the teaser, and although I'm not excited out of my brains, I'm going to go see it on the weekend it comes out.
Also, at the end of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book, they do go up in the glass elevator, and yes, there is a book after it (I've got it sitting on my bookshelf:) ).
Does anyone know if there will be any actual singing like in the original? The original could actually be classified as a "musical" I suppose, as there were quite a few numbers in it.
While those musical numbers had nothing to do with the book the story is based on, I did enjoy hearing Gene Wilder sing about a world made of "pure imagination". Or how about "Cheer up Charlie"? And let's not forget the classic "Coz I've got a golden ticket!".
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will not be a musical. The only singing will be done by the Oompa Loompas, which conforms to the book. Danny Elfman who is doing the scoring for the movie will be singing their songs.
