I love horror movies just as everyone in this forum does. I buy them all the time. But, like many, I always try to look for the best deal. Getting to the point, I was in best buy the other day and I kept seeing these sets of horror movies. One was like 50 movies for like 30$, one was 20 movies for 20$, and one was like 10 movies for 10$. Automatically I picked each of them up with the same excitement, only to be let down with movies I have never heard of. If anyone knows if these sets are worth the price I'd like to be informed so i dont waste my money.

I bought the 50 movies for $30 one when I was on vacation in Michigan, assuming you mean this one:

It's definitely worth it if you like older films. I'm talking really old, since it ranges from the 1910's (Nosferatu) to the 1970's.
The quality isn't always great, but some of these films are classics. You've got Nosferatu there, as well as Night Of The Living Dead, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, The Phantom Of The Opera, Hunchback Of Notre Dame, Little Shop Of Horrors, House On Haunted Hill, Dementia 13, Carnival Of Souls, White Zombie, etc.
A lot of these can be bought for $1.99 in some shops, and I saw a couple on the cheap racks in Best Buy when I was there, but this way you can instantly add 50 old movies to your collection for less than 60 cents a film.
I'd seriously recommend you get that one if you can afford it... and the same goes with the Sci-Fi one, because they're all basically a Mystery Science Theatre 3000 episode waiting to happen (and some of them already have).

I recently picked up the 50 Movie Pack one for $28 before tax. I saw it as a good deal, if you like Classic horror. Not the, pardon my language, most of the shit that they release these days.
Things like Night Of The Living Dead, The Phantom Of The Opera (Lon Cheny, Jr.), Carnival Of Souls, Etc.
I found it to be a good buy, even though I pretty much have most of the more reknowned ones on DVD. It's really up to you, I love Classic horror AND modern horror, many people don't.

I was fooled into buying one of these also. Never again I say. It was a huge rip off.

Why are they a rip off? Are they like really bad transfers? Just curious cause if they looked and sounded good Id say it was a good deal...if not then Im with you all the way.

I love picking up these sets
there are some true classics and some I'd never heard of before but really enjoyed
I'm a huge fan of cheesy horror and sci-fi movies from ther 50's and 60's so these collections are perfect for that...
Scream-kids need not apply

Yeah, well, the transfers are surprisingly terrible. But who cares? I own all of these sets and havent begun to have watched them all. Overall, I have 200 of these films - andI only paid about 100. that is NOT a ripoff!

These are all public domain titles, so distribution companies rarely put care into cleaning the prints up. Most of the films in the horror collection have "definitive" editions, buy they'll cost you $20-$30 a pop. For instance, THIS (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000AKY58/qid=1104554531/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/104-0079058-7072750?v=glance&s=dvd) version of The Phantom of the Opera is fucking superb, but if you're willing to sacrifice quality for a more economical purchasing decision, it doesn't really matter. It just depends on what you want to do.

At the end of the day if you buy cheap, you get cheap.
See this as a way to enhance your horror knowledge. After all, you're getting shitloads of films for a very low price.
Then, if you decide you really like one (such as Phantom Of The Opera), then you should go out and splash $30 on the cleaned-up edition. But at least it won't be a blind buy.

Good way to look at it. It is definately an excellent set to dip into the waters of older horror. I am curious, I still have not watched it...
How is Dementia 13? Curious if I should spend the time to sit down and watch it.

I liked it. A bit slow at first but very pleasing at the end of the day.

What he said. Dementia 13 is a brooding, Hitchcockian whodunit filled with style. God, I sound like a quote on a DVD cover.

Even if so, your "posting style" and "reviewing style" is really good at capturing attention... I wonder if you speak as well as you write? :D
Anyway, I will check it out, I trust both of your opinions.

It's from Carnival Of Souls:

Which, coincidentally, is the very first film on the 50 horror films boxset being discussed in this very thread!

It's from Carnival Of Souls...
No problem. I have since changed it though. I am actually writing a screenplay/short that has some revolvment around Paranormal (Ouijas, etc.) so I changed it over to set some more mood, but I am trying to gain some atmospherical inspiration from CoS.
By the way... did spizznittlebam wind up getting one of the sets? No news back from him/her.
