View Full Version : Stop Complaining About Your Damn Late Fees!
Lindsey

I've been working at Hollywood Video for a couple of months now, and it's a great job. The only drawback is the customers who like to blame things on me (or my co-workers). If they have late fees, apparently it's my fault. I can't even count the times people have litterly yelled at me, demanding to see the manager, because 'they know for a fact that they returned the movies on time'. Yes, I understand that late fees SUCK...but that doesn't mean you have to take it out on us! Even I get late fees, and my movies are free!
So please people, next time you have late fees, smile...and pay the damn thing without any complaints! :)
Or go to Blockbuster...:D

Well, I think the real question is... are they yelling at your FACE?

I know I wouldnt.

Ok, seriously, I agree. I worked in a video store 7 years ago, and thats pretty much all I ever heard. We gave slips with rentals, so people would know when the movies were due back. Its not like it was my fault the dumbasses lost their slips and couldnt work their brains to remember to return tapes on time.

I never rent for two reasons: late fees, and the fact that Blockfucker has swallowed up all but one of the rental places in the city, and that one is very expensive.
Yeah, I'm lazy. I know, I know. Late fees suck, though. I'd never blame them on the poor schmuck working at the counter, though.

i really love the people who's accounts show that their movie was checked in at like 11pm, one day late, and they proclaim that they don't know what day it was, what month, or what year, but they definitely returned it on time at 8pm and it sat in the box for 20 some-odd hours.

Oh, good lord, do I have plenty of experience with these shiny, happy people...You wouldn't believe the amount of folks who get pissed when they have a, GASP!, $1.75 fee!
Still, I especially love it when people try to start new accounts to avoid gigantic late fees they've racked up. One couple tried to start a new account, but they already had one...with a $50-plus late fee count.

i think some of the excuses are great
"My son rented it, im not paying for it"
"my parents rented it" and the movie was jackass: the movie, right bud

Blah, pay the fee and be done with it. Never understood why someone would want to argue, and lets be honest .. make a complete jackass out of themselves, than just simply paying the $2-3 bucks and get the fuck out of there.
I wonder how long these late fees are going to be around? With NetFlix, and Blockbuster doing away with them, it will be increasingly tougher for other video store chains to compete I'm sure. Especially since it's quite obvious that business-is-not-what-it-once-was.

That is why I took my DVD's INSIDE when I dropped them off... :D
I never trusted the drop box......
When I rented a movie and found out that the movie was still on my account and explained to the dude at Blockbuster that I ALREADY returned the movie. Did I argue and blame him? Well not yet but the guy excused himself and he ended up finding the movie that was still on my account as not returned sitting on the shelf in the store...... HELLO!!!

Amen to the boobie honey (that'd be you, Linds darling, I miss you ;) ).
You're late, you're late. Pay up. What bugs me is that the people complaining about having to pay late fees are probably the same people who're complaining because their mail comes late, or because the people they work with don't deliver their work at the right deadline...
A deadline's a deadline. You accept it, you respect it.

Oh, yeah, I get those a lot. It's especially funny when a woman or man says that first one, and they're the only person who can rent on that account.

There was actually one pyschotic I heard about before I started working at this video store. Apparently he owed a hefty fee in late charges. When told about this he got really pissed, but left...He then later called the store and went psycho on the manager, saying that he was gonna come in a blow her fuckin head off if she didn't erase the charges....A restraining order was later filed....Sweet Jesus! I almost couldn't believe it! But yeah, I hate having to tell people they have late charges because they always have some excuse, or won't pay it....Like this one fella who was renting under his brothers acct. and there was a dollar late charge.. i told him about it and he's like "That's my bro's, i ain't payin for it!". Then he paid with a twenty..Please die you hick ass scum.
What can I say that hasn't been said? Other than people are retards and can eat shit for all I care.

I don't understand all the complaints either. And now I think you get the movie for 7 days. Isn't that what it is now?
I have a friend and his family is always late with their movies. You know what they did? Absolutely nothing. They started rented at Hollywood Video and the same shit has started again recently. I don't know why they are late with their movies, but they aren't the psychos like some described on this post. They're Catholics.
If that happened to me I would ask the guy what prevented him from bringing the movie back in that past 6 day period. Usually when I rent a movie, I intend on watching it that night and then I will take it back the next day with no problems at all.
Also there is something called Pay-Per-View. Anyone heard of it? It's pretty nice for the person who doesn't want to go out and rent the new release and it's for around the same price.
Blockbusters sucks now anyway. I get everything from Hollywood Video now.
Just show em your boobies and they'll never complain again.
Just so you know, If that happened to me I would tip that girl big time for the excellent service.

I remember over hearing a phone convo in a video update (now known as moviegallery), and apparently a dude had kept a video for SO long, that he had a hundred dollar plus late fee ( just a funny tidbit I wanted to share). But, if you have a late fee, and you know it, just do what I do, dodge them. If you wanna keep renting, just go to the other video store down the street. Or you could just pay it......

My local rental place wanted me to pay 10 bucks for a film I returned ON TIME.
After a small debate she JUST HAPPENED TO REMEMBER that last weeks ice storm shut the computer's down and charged everyone three days full of late fees.
If it's late, for whatever reason, I'll pay it. If it's not, you'll have an easier time kissing my ass than for me to smile and pay.

one time i let my friend rent 2 flicks on my account... one of the flicks was Bubble Boy... so like 2 months later, i wanted to see Bubble Boy so i tried to rent it (this was at a Hollywood Video to.. where i always rented until i got Netflix) and i walked up to the counter and tried to rent it.. and the woman workin the counter said im not allowed to have 2 copies of the same movie out at once. It sucked to cuz the other movie he rented was Poor White Trash (which he oinly rented cuz it had Jaime Pressly and she is incredibly hot).. but i didnt get mad.. i just told em to go fuck off and pushed over a candy rack.. haha nah... i just put bubble boy back on the shelf and rented something else..it turned out my friend never returned em... so the next time i went back, i just paid the bill (of $50 i believe it was) and then made sure my friend gave me the money!
I dont see any reason in getting pissed at stupid shit like that... if you handle things in a nice and respectful manner people are more inclined to help you out. I know that when i worked at Home Depot... we would have customers that would want wood cut (i worked in the lumber dept, mainly cuz im just so damn muscular and thats the area where they need the most muscles...!!!) and i would have ppl come to me and ask if i could cut a few pieces of wood for them in a respectful manner.. and i would do it.. and we had a 5 cut maximum.. but if the ppl were friendly and thankful, i would gladly cut more than 5 cuts for them.. and then id get fuckin arseholes, and they'd come up and DEMAND cuts and id be like "fine.. but we have a 5 cut maximum.. and i do have to charge you 50 cents for every cut after 2) (thats what we did for ppl we didnt like) and they'd get pissed cuz if i could only do 5 cuts how could they finish up their project... and they'd start to get all mad at me.. and i just be like "oh well... 5 cuts is our policy... you are not our only customer"!
Haha sorry for tellin that long and pry pointles story... but i figured it fit in with the whole customers suck crucial amounts of ass!
Lindsey (and every other video stor emplyee) u should just tell the fuckers off... cuz i been fired from a good few jobs mainly cuz i dont put up with ppls shit... i am a smart ass to boot.. and when ppl get shitty with me.. i turn into a smart ass which pisses em off even more... and you may lose your job.. BUT... bet your ass there is always another job to be found! So if there ever is a person who you seriously just wanna beat the hell out of cuz they are being a prick.. just be like "hey fucker.. its a fucking 2 dollar fee... im sorry if you cant fuckin afford that because your already 3 months late on your morgage payment for your trailer... but dont get loud with me because your a fat slob who cant remember to return Juwanna Man on time!" That'll shut them up!

Here's a question:
When you know a company is charging you more than they should, do you get mad or just pay it?
For example, if you get charged 12 bucks for a combo meal at Wendy's, do you speak up?
If your credit card bill comes in and there is 15-20 dollars extra on top of what should be there, do you call to debate the fee?
A telephone number on your bill for 30 minutes to some god forsaken town you've never called, do you debate that one?
I'm just wondering if Video Rental Stores are supposed to be the only place you are exempt from complaining about fees that are the company's fault and not yours.

Here's something we do at Premiere Video to try and ensure that we are spot on when it comes to late fees. Whoever opens in the morning, since it's almost always dead as Dillinger, prints out the late list, then checks for every one of those titles on the shelf, to see if someone just forgot to scan them in and put them out. A couple of them get away like that, but the majority are indeed late. If they were forgotten and put on the shelf, we just erase the fee. But 95% of the time, it's peoples' own fault if they forget their rentals, and there's different per-day fees for different types of rentals ($1.75 per day for new arrivals, 80 cents per day for Game Boy games, etc.) that correspond with how much you would pay for the rentals normally.
I dunno how it works with other stores, but we try to avoid having a mess with customers, so chances are that if you have a late fee, it's your fault here. A few customers are cool about it and admit, "Yep, I forgot that one in the car," but a couple just go psycho and refuse to pay (ooo, $3.50 is really gonna put a dent in your financial empire ).

i think the problem isnt ppl complaining as much as it is the MANNER in which they complain.
I have no problem with a complaint, done respectfully, and if i can help out with that, i will.... but if i get a complaint that is an ass hole just being an ass hole... then fuck them! I understand sometimes ppl fuck up and it does piss you off... and even i ONCE got real mad at a situation that fucked me out of over $100, and i took it out on the lady, but it wasnt her fault (the next time i went ot that bank, i did apologize and say i was havin a shitty day when that happened) .
Complaing isnt a problem... being a prick douche bag is though!

Yeah I agree that being civil is something that we should all do, no need to walk in and shout or be a dick-off.
But the original poster says "Stop complaining about your damn late fees" and to smile and pay them, or go to blockbuster. So that's pretty much what I'm debating.

Having access to internet and NOT using Netflix and STILL dealing with shithole places like HW or BB is like havng the money to buy an air conditioner but instead still using a block of fucking ice to cool yourself off with...the future is NOW...the sooner EVERYBODY who uses the Net gets with the program and goes online rental, the sooner these fucking video stores will go out of business...sorry..video employess, but I DO pray for the end of these video stores..for MANY reasons....namely, being about 5 years behind the fucking times with coverting to dvd and carrying ALL titles.

I really like Netflix, but I don't find it's worth my time trying to get new 'popular' releases from them. Much easier to cruise into the store after getting groceries or something to pick up Eternal Sunshine or what not.

Yes there are honest mistakes where it is actually the store's fault (of which I've been on the receaving end of), but 99 out of 100 times it's not.
The problem is simple: You give people a deadline - for anything - and they'll miss it. How many times have you seen someone scrambling on April 15th to get their taxes done? They've only had four months to figure it out, as well as a lifetime of knowing the due date, and yet they miss it.
A movie starts at 7:00 and people will be late.
The credit card bill is due, and it will be late.
The store closes at ten, yet some asshole will show up at 10:01 and demand to be let in.
I worked at a dry cleaner once and we had a same-day-service if you dropped anything off before noon - guess what? Assholes would show up at 12:30 and want same day service.
Breakfast at McDonalds ends at 10:30 - who shows up at 10:35?
How many people do Christmas shopping on Dec 24th?
etc.
No matter what - you give a deadline and someone will always push the last minute until they run out - and it's your fault.
I've worked at a movie theater for ten years and it never ceases to piss me off when some douche shows up twenty minutes late and half jokingly - half not joking says "Can you rewind it?"
To which I say half joking - half not: "I don't think the people who got here on time would like that."
This whole no late fee thing from Blockbuster is just caving in to whining babies. You know what? They'll still be late. Only now they have like two weeks to return a movie, which they won't - and then they'll just get charged for the movie - which will in turn piss them off and make them avoid going back to Blockbuster - the very same thing late fees were doing.

I also work at Hollywood Video and I'm the one to get bitched at all the time for people's late fees. And you know what's even worse?
I live in ARKANSAS where we get a bunch of hicks and ghetto acting folk on our asses, that have no senes of reality or intellegence in the least. But we're not talking about 4.13 folks...oh no...we're talking 70, 80 dollars in late fees sometimes. These people are addicts to renting movies and racking up the late fees.
My BIGGEST COMPLAINT though--and god hope they don't hear me---is how screwed up the company is! They tell us we are not supposed to let people rent movies if they have over 25 dollars in late fees, but when the customer calls the company and complains, WE get bitched at because we didn't take their late fee off. And why is this!?.....
Because "The customer is always right." The customer is always right my ASS!
I hate corporal goverment propaganda-rigged FAT CAT ruled SHIT like this!
*sigh*
and for the guy who wants video stores to go out of business and everyone to use NetFlix. Um....I would totally do Net Flix if the fact that I wouldn't get to see my indie films...umm....EVER! Considering they only get in a few titles and soooo many people are signed on-line for that shit they always say "VERY LONG WAIT" across the screen. Hm...and even when I do get them I have to wait 3 whole days to get my movies, then send them back and wait another 3 whole days for them to get them back and then for them to send me another batch. By the time it all adds up I don't get my movies here and now when I want them! (but they shouldn't get rid of the on-line business bc there are lots of classics I want that I'll never see again in a video store--but that's besides the point)
now If I can just complain as to the fact that I'm the ONLY person at my work that even picks up indie/foreign films for a 'consideration'--let alone 99.5 percent of the customers. What can I say? It's Arkansas.
Maybe I should move to...where are you....Lindsey...? j/k
