Why do you call it Soccer?
It's called football!
America is the only country that has football (I think), the rest of the world has soccer.
Soccer is football, football (NFL kind) doesn't even make players use their feet for other than running!

(Yes this is movie related)

I saw the trailer for The Pink Panther, and Stever Martin's character is supposed to be french.
Wich is european.
Europe calls it football.
But he still calls it soccer!
Not only would his character call it football, but what pisses me off is that do those studio execs honestly believe that every day americans would really get confused if they used football?
I mean the plot is about a FOOTBALL coach getting killed, wich means plenty of shots of said spot in progress!
I hate it when movies simplify obvious shit!
Those studio exec shitheads appearantly think that americans are as stupid as themselves!

Football!

Over 90 percent of the country calls it football and you complain about one or two countries calling it soccer?

I do not understand

Iceland is green. Greenland is Icy. You drive on a parkway. And park on a driveway.

America just likes to be difficult!

Yes, but how many times a day do you hear anything from those countries?
America is pretty much 90 percent of the world.

That's an easy one , because we have a real sport over here called Football , where men knock each other silly over an oval shaped sphere , trying to cross the goal line or to get in position for a field goal . Not like soccer where if you breathe on the precious players they give you a yellow card , or maybe even a red  .

So , soccer is appropriate because we already have Football .

It's called Rugby & it's played without the benefit of tin hats & excessive padding. ;)

Hey...I don't give a damn if it is football in other countries...The game will never truly be accepted in the U.S. like it has everywhere else in the world.

For good reason, mind you. Boring game.

The Inspector calling the beautiful game "soccer" just doesn't seem right.

I think if the setup of American football were like rugby, the pads would have to be taken off. To play American football without pads would result in multiple manslaughters every year.

If the top American sport were rugby, I wonder if pads would have to be worn there also, considering that the game would have much more speed, intensity, talent, and money invested into it with the rich executives and the best overall athletes in the world.

I believe in Italy it is called it calcio, while we Indonesian call it sepak bola.

Yeah, but calcio literally means something like "ball to foot".

What's the literal translation of sepak bola?

I really don't care what it's called , i'm pretty much bored with both sports , American Football and Soccer ( Euro Football ) . Hockey is where it's at for me . I would imagine though , that the best thing about " soccer " is watching it live with a bunch of hot chicks screaming in the stands wearing skimpy outfits , on the tele it becomes sleep inducing quicklike , looks like something you have to experience in person to enjoy .

Ted Pikul

But if you were to say hockey in England everyone would assume you were talking about a (mostly) girls' game played on grass.

Talk about 2 nations divided by the same language.;)

Rugby is pretty fucking cool, but I have to wonder if American Football actually is more dangerous. Hell, even with pads and helmets, there are many dangerous injuries in the sport, even paralysis or other career ending injuries.

Canada has "American football" also. I've also heard of something called NFL Europe - so it's not just us Americans.

Personally, I love to play and watch both.

sepak bola literally means kick ball in English.

Anyway, a friend of mine had an interesting view on American Football. He thinks the game is created with players with such specific tasks so that anyone could play the game. Whether your big, not so big, slow, fast, or can't do anything but kick the ball, there's a place for you in the teaml. Meanwhile football (soccer to Americans) require the player to have good overall skills (with the exception of the goalkeeper of course).

I disagree. Anyone can play "soccer" whereas gridiron requires specific body types in regimented roles.

For example you can have tall (Jurgen Klinsmann) or short (Ronaldo) strikers in "soccer" but you have to be built like a brick shithouse to scrimmage in gridiron.

"Calcio" in Italy translates as "kick".
What do you mean by "ball to foot"?
As regards "Soccer" it sounds quite foolish probably because in an Italian dialect it sounds like a well known body part belonging to women, only.
As regards America being the 90% of the world, that's really the attitude that makes people love the USA so much.
I agree with Jas about the use of a word that a European would not use.
It's like when in old Fred Astaire's movies allegedly located in Venice, they had white gondolas: gondolas have been black for centuries, since 1600 more or less.

Yeah, and we just loooove being told that we should do it Europe's way. It tells us that North America isn't the only continent with an attitude problem.

What I meant is that if the character is European, he/she should use a European term, just like if the character is American he/she should use an American term.
If I watch an American movie I expect to hear people using term used in the USA, not in Europe if the terms are different.
Or if I watch a movie with a known location, I expect some consistency.

Ted Pikul

I doubt anyone will watch The Pink Panther movie anyway so if they call it football (for a non existent European audience) or soccer (for a non existent American audience) it doesn't really matter in the end.

I agree with the moral standpoint of this. However, I do think that films should be tailored for their designated audience. The designated audience is the one who must interpret what is being said. If they think 'football' and gridiron comes to mind, you've got a minor miscalculation, and some confusion may arise that needs to be settled, instead of paying attention to the film.

How many times am I going to see this fucking debate? Who gives a flying fuck if the U.S. and Canada call it Soccer? The rest of you can call it football, I don't give a shit! I am going to call it Soccer, and everyone else I know is too. Accept it! We're not trying to force you to change your ways and call it soccer too, so stop griping about it! There, that's all I have to say on this subject.

Anyways in europe fall it football, in north america call it soccer it all means the same,

also Canada plays Canadian Football which is a hell of alot better

and about the hockey, we call it hockey as short form seeing that field hockey isn't all that big,

The way I see it, in football ("soccer") you use your foot a hell of a lot more than you do in American Football ("football").

The only time you use your foot in American Football is when punting, kicking off or kicking for a field goal. And that takes up a very short percentage of the entire game time.

Football is the opposite. You use your feet all the time except for headers, goalkeepers and throw-ins.

So are you saying we should name it handball? ;)
