OKay! I work at a "Hollywood" video and my biggest complaint is that the world in movies is getting more and more "Hollywoodish" (and the movies are getting worse!) and the Indie/Foreign films are getting the shab. Now, before all of you go answering my question as to whether or not you think I am a film snob, ask yourself "do you even give most of the indie flicks a chance?" --but frankly I'm sure you guys don't give a rats ass about me because you don't know me and even if you did you'd say "Oh Will, you'll never stop will you" and pat me on the head...anyway!!

My complaint is that most people don't even give Indie films a chance in the light of day and in return the video store at which I work is not getting as many of those titles/getting rid of the older ones as well bc they don't 'do as well' --and some we get at the indie theatre here! I don't even know why we don't get them at the video store!! It doesn't make sense! "Irreversible"--NO one has it here. Glad all you people like it but I'll never see it. And maybe part of the reason is because I am in non-cultured Arkansas, but oh well....

I remember the week "Barbarian Invasions" came out some guy asked me what was the best film of that week and I said "well, it depends on what you like" and he said "I like everything" and I said "Well, there's this one." and he said "What's that?" and I said "A french film about..." and he said "OHhhhh nevermind...I don't like that kind of crap!" What the hell!?

And movies like Collateral and Spider-Man 2, I really didn't care for. *shrugs* In fact, most movies I really liked this year no one has even heard of --- "Broken Wings"--ring a bell?

And then you get these people that say things like "That movie "Garden State" or "Monster" that was 'weird' ---PLEASE--watch "Mulholland Drive" "Donnie Darko" "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" "Being John Malkovich" "Jack and the Beanstalk (1974)" or "Clockwork Orange" if you want 'weird' or 'strange' --not that I'm saying "Monster" wasn't good, I loved it, but there wasn't anything 'weird' about it--oh yeah, they think "De-Lovely" is weird too---*rolls eyes*

AND one more last complaint to get it all out---these BIBLE BELT people and their dislike for movies with language, any other religion BESIDES christianity, SUBTITLES!!! and here's the big kicker.....HOMOSEXUALITY!! OH NO!! *gasps* please, give me a fucking break! If you guys only saw 'half' the movies I see and opened your minds just a bit more then maybe the films that you're watching wouldn't seem so harsh in "CONTENT!!"

(And I really have not always been this way> I 'try' to be open-minded and take into consideration not everyone watches 400 bloody films a year like I do, but this has just built up more and more til I can't stomach it any longer. If you're thinking I'm one of those people that like an 'indie' film 'just because' it's indie you're wrong--I really didn't care much for "Baadasssss!" and I actually thought "The Village" wasn't that bad, except for that cop-out ending! Fucking shit! I hated that movie! lol. Point is, when I make my 10 of the year list this year will probably have one mainstream film at the most...and that will be "Kill Bill Vol. 2" which is 'actually' an indie film if you go by the company.....I just don't know if I'm getting pickier or the Hollywood films are really sucking ass now-a-days)

Oh and one more thing--just because I like some film someone assumes I am like the people in the film!! I loved "The Contender"--OMG You're an atheist! (so my dad thinks bc I liked it) I loved "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" or "Before Sunset" OMG You're a faggot. Shut the fuck up people and get a life! I am who I am and I like what I like and just because I like some cracked-up movie about a drag-queen doesn't mean I go queening it up on the weekends.

*SIGH* Ahhh! I feel so much better!

sorry If I offended anyone this is just how I feel at the moment

I know your pain man, having to deal with customers and movies, who knew it could be so rough. I've gotten to the point where if they are bitching about a movie i love i just shrug and move on. that'll be 4.32 please. I work at a hollywood video too, but i guess we get more indie films at mine, though we didn't carry Irreverisible, i had to go to video king for that.

Yeah, I 'used' to just shrug it off, but after day after day and customer after custmoer allllll dayyy long...lol--I'm sure New York is a lot more welcoming than Arkansas, considering they're more cultured. lol. Glad I'm not the only one feeling this way, because I was beginning to be afraid I was turning snobbish. Today is actually my last day of work until summer or spring break one bc I'm back to school. I love my job, though, really--free movies--and we get occasional good customers--but most of the people I really liked I used to work with are now gone or about to leave--oh well. But yeah, sometimes the customers can be very close-minded/opionated, leaving me to keep my mouth shut and vent it all out when I come home. lol. I know they're just movies, but they're a big part of my life, lol.

I feel you on this one. I live in Alabama, and let me tell you, it sucks.

I rented the movie Boys Don't Cry about a year ago at Movie Gallery, and the guy up at the front said, "I wouldn't rent that one if I were you." I asked him why, and he leaned closer to me and whispered, "It's got Queers in it." I was literally speechless.

I'm Catholic and wouldnt even THINK about living in Alabama.. I dont want nobody dictating to me what I can buy, sell, rent, watch or download..PERIOD...the beauty about my faith is, if I feel gulity about my actions, I can go to (confession) over a stupid porno, NOT a JAIL!

One of the reasons I am SO anti Hollywood and BB..BB being the worst offender...is that if a movie doesnt "rent well" it will be taken off the shelf to make way for the most popular flick of the moment..and it doesnt matter if the movie is a classic ...if it hasnt rented in a certain period of time, these damnable stores will retire it... death to ALL B&M corporate owned video stores.

I work at Blockbuster and you all know how much people hate Blockbuster...so I put up with a lot of shit just to get free movies. This one guy rented "The Passion of the Christ", but brought it back and watched to exchange it for another movie because it had subtitles, so I said sure (it happens a few times a week)...but then he brought up "Hero". I just smiled and told him how much of a great movie it was. I wonder if he agreed...

The Hero DVD has an English dub, I fucking hate dubs...

lol... rofl... hmm. I think it is catholic organizations that regularly ban books, videos, and music that is deemed paganistic. Also who do you think Braveheart was fighting against, or Maximus... lol

Too fucking funny, Also confession does nothing, once you commit a sin you going to hell. No if ands or buts about it, way Christianity works. Confession is something that was made up long after the bible and all that shit. Also the Catholic chuch is nothing more that a bunch of religions put together, which happened around the same time Jesus was supposedly born.

The Greeks who are Welsh now collected all the religious teachings of of the world. With all this knowledge they wrote one book, which is the bible. The Romans then inslaved and killed almost all the Greeks, and few of them escaped up into the mountains. But most of them were either killed or turned into slaves, who were forced into the military.

Maximus who after being the Roman's greatest soldier turned the Roman army against Rome. Maximus then escaped to what now Wales or nothern England and set up a new kingdom. Then returned Roman army to them and became emperor of Rome.

Little different that the movie huh?

I agree with you on most of your points. But even you should know video stores are for the blockbuster flicks most of the time. Sure they have indie and foreign flicks. But their emphasis is on the big hollywood movies because those are the ones that bring in money. And that's because most average people in this world don't do enough research into movies to know what 95% of these indie/foreign films are. I don't blame them though. They don't love films like say, many of the people on this site do (including me). Film is our passion... we are film nerds and we dig deeper because we are nerds. But the average poeple in society aren't as passionate about it so they just serch out the biggest films of the year. It's just a way of life. And it's their loss that they're missing all these great movies because of it.

Now I do completely agree wiht your point on subtitles. To me, dubbing ruins a perfectly good movie and it pisses me off when someones only reason for disliking a movie is because "they had to read it" as I've heard so many people say. God forbid you read subtitles at the bottom of a screen. Like it's such a difficult task.

About the whole Bible belt thing.. what do you expect? You're dealing with extremists in most cases. They aren't going to want to see that in a movie and as far as I'm concerned that's fine. Sure, they do go overboard no doubt but seeing as how they are extremists it's nothing new. And you'll find out that most religions don't look highly upon another religion. (I'm religious, but I find that poblematic. I don't really care what someone else believes in and I respect whatever it may be. I also find it disturbing that I've been called out as being a "servant of evil" and "not christian" for liking some of the things I do.. it's kind of sad).

And just so you know you aren't going crazy, hollywood movies are getting shittier.

Yeah, I hear you on snobbery. All of us dorks on here are probably snobs, otherwise what would we be doing on here.

Me, I love to argue about movies. People think because they "love" a movie its "good". Now there's nothing wrong with loving any movie, you like what you like. But don't try to argue that "the Ring" is "good" because you love it, but "Magnolia" is stupid and you hate it because you don't get it.

Also, I'm a funny dude but I fucking hate *HATE* comedies. I go to stupid Adam Sandler movies or Farrelly bros films and I'm the only one in the theater and/or out of my friends not laughing. 90% of the time "comedies" suck, ever since this horrendous "gross out" humor started in the mid 90s. And something I find funny like "Royal Tennenbaums" is about as funny as ball cancer to most others. And they're like "dude, you're such a snob" because I like Fellini movies, excuse the fuck out of me. Like this "Harold and Kumar". All I hear about is how goddamn funny this "Harold and Kumar" movie is. I know it's going to be retarded, but I go in with an open mind, 'hey, maybe it'll funny.' No. It's awful. Pot jokes, dick jokes, "wacky" situations, the same old fuckin crap. If it doesn't have "Zucker" or "Abrams" " in the titles, I'm not interested.

I like both indie films and Hollywood-ish flicks. Not all of them, but I like some of what Hollywood has to offer - better special effects (Lord of the Rings, Spider-man) and, for the most part, recognizable talent (Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Mel Gibson).

But indies do have better stories and character driven movies, most of the time. Movies like Garden State and Memento knocked me off my feet on how freakin' awesome they were.

Now, I'm not going to go watch every Tom Cruise or special-effects laden movie that Hollywood puts out - cuz that would be stupid. If a movie I see catches my interest, than I'm going to make a point to watch it. Plain and simple.

I usually watch the Hollywood stuff not becuase something is subtitled or it's too complicated for me to understand, it's just that most non-Hollywood films don't appeal to me in the same way that some Hollywood films don't appeal to me.

Non-Hollywood Stuff that appeals to me: El Mariachi, old John Woo movies, Clerks

What dosn't appeal to me: Garden State, Barbarian Invasions, etc.

What've you guys got against Hollywood movies anyway?

Um..I didnt offer up my faith as point for you to ignorantly ridicule it..ON ALL ASPECTS of your inane response. I offered it up as an example of agreeing with the posters argument...ah..never mind..you arent worth it.

..btw..its Evangelicals that are into book, video, etc banning...and not a few liberal groups who wanna PC it up and get rid of some Mark Twain books as well... please be more informed on issues next time. :o

first i would like to say that i have deep admiration for Catholics and Christians, they do a lot for society. My post wasn't ment to harm or provoke you, just inform. (now i know what Darwin felt like)

never do you make a point or bring up any facts, just insult... Yeah i'm insane, sure... and ignorant, sure... but isn't that what they said about Jesus? Too funny... anyone with a alternative view to yours is put up on a cross and crucified... that's the reason i'm not and never would be a Christian. You go to chuch every sunday, do you even listen?

All my family lines have been Catholic or Christians, and i have much respect for the dept they paid.

Saying all that, my best wishes to Pope John Paul and his recovery from sickness and all men of cloth who fiind sabbath in the lord. You are the light for many helpless souls

PS: Really your wrong about the banning, those liberals are christian and most Catholic too, they just make a point of not saying it. I am a huge fan of rock music and the shit that Christians accuse Pagans of is just pure lies and deception.

Propaganda Roman Catholic Church. A division of the Roman Curia that has authority in the matter of preaching the gospel, of establishing the Church in non-Christian countries, and of administering Church missions in territories where there is no properly organized hierarchy.

PPS: sad thing is Catholic schools are highly financed organizations, and they still turn out ignorance

oh and BTFW my point was how Christians dictate what Film makers can make. Even if history is changed....
