View Full Version : Exploiting Tragedy

This is prob old news , but i think it's getting worse .
I'm sick , tired , bored , annoyed , unsettled , and just about fed up with the greedy vultures who profit from tragedies , the large ones like the recent tsunamis , and the small ones like the Laci Peterson murder . All the scum comes to the surface when these things occur , the individuals selling their stories , the news , the experts on tv , the grief counselors , the politicians , they all come out of their holes with their hand out looking to cash in somehow on other persons misfortune .
Why did that waste of life Amy Fisher write a book about her oh woe is me life when she was the guilty one who shot half someone's face off ,and who was dumb enough to buy it , and why did Oprah have her on her show , putting this peon in a good light , she should be living in a cave for what she did , now she's like a hero of some sort , a tragic figure who should be pitied , sorry , i think she should still be in jail , preferably in solitary confinement , and all the proceeds from her book should go to the victim for medical bills and such . But instead , Amy Fisher gets the royal treatment and all the money whores , Oprah , her publisher , the distributor , her lawyers , they all make some money off of what she did , shoot someone in the face , almost killing them . It's a disgrace , to say the least .
Then you have this Amber Fry slut who is practically spitting on Laci Peterson's ( and her child's ) grave . First she screws her husband , now she writes a tell all book about her relationship with Scott Peterson . For someone who didn't want to be in the spotlight , for someone who didn't want to testify she's sure finding ways to cash in on her adulterous ways . Oh , i forgot , she's a whore , so it's not a surprise she would try to profit from someone's murder . Then you get the other whores who hold televison interviews with her , for ratings of course , and the high priced lawyer who only took her as a client for publicity . Everybody has their hand in the till on this one , and everyone is happy to make a couple of bucks , from what , the murder of an innocent woman and her unborn child , it's shameless ., and sickening . Go away Fry , you sucked someon'es dick , you're a slut , go away already and get ready for Saturday night , someone needs a fixin' . You would be doing amateur porn for a living if you didn't hit the jackpot by screwing someone who got convicted of murder .
Now comes the topper , the Tsunami disaster . Everyone is coming out of the caves for this one . First you have the lowest forms of life , the so called charities who pocket most of the money that's supposed to go to the victims , i wouldn't doubt if some of them keep all of it . Then you have the survivors themselves . Stay with me on this one . I don't know what any particular person went through over there , but i'm almost positive the " lucky " peeps who have video of it are selling it to the highest bidder . So , they happened to be high enough up not to be affected by the rushing water , and they caught it on tape , so now they want to cash in like all the other whores . And i'm sure all those people who " survived " and are doing interviews are getting paid , and will write a book about it later , and sell the movie rights . This disaster will mint new millionaires , its the nature of exploitation , the higher the body count , the more money to be made , tons of people perished that day , but a ton more will cash in their chips and have a nice life . Everybody wins . The publishers for the eventual novels , the lawyers , the networks that will finance the made for tv movie , the news outlets because ratings go up , the bogus charities , the politicians , the survivors , the survivors second cousins , the psychiatrists or any mental health professional , a bunch of peep will profit from this .
It all reminds me of a quote from " The Last Broadcast " , one of the characters said , When bodies start dropping , there's money to be made . That statement becomes more prophetic every day .

Yeah I was really getting angered with all of the Jon Benet Ramsey exploitation.
National Enquirer would take a snapshot of the father smiling with his family out in public and say "LOOK AT THE LAUGH OF GUILT. HOW COULD HE BE LAUGHING AT A TIME WHEN HIS DAUGHTER WAS MURDERED!"
All the while the picture was taken three years after her death.
I guess the stuff wouldn't be done if there wasn't such a demand for it though.

I also hate when unscrupulous people take advantage of somebody else's tragedies to earn money. It's really disgusting. And the media are guilty as well. They do these stories and show them like freaking soap operas just to get higher ratings...
In my country, the TV channels put this ad running that was something like this: "We, (insert any TV network) were the first to deploy our reporters on the field to cover this tragedy..." WHO CARES IF YOU'RE THE FIRST!!! THIS ISN'T A FUCKING RACE!!!
For the Tsunami tragedy, my wife and I discussed where to send the help. We agreed that the one place that will use it to the fullest is the Red Cross, which is staging a massive effort to help survivors and pick up what's left of these coastal areas. This way, no shithead executive cashes in, no commercials are on TV with some well-paid actor pleading into the camera, and no scams. The Tsunami tragedy had camera men all over it that were too busy filming to lend a hand, even when lives were at stake. And there are Congressmen, so-called charities and bitchy show hosts all putting their hands in the cookie jar.
Yeah, I'm a little sick of the whole capitalizing on tragedy for profit, but I listen to select cases differently from assholes like Amy Fischer and Joey Buttafuco. Make no mistake, I see Amy as a slut and Joey as a cheating slug. And I see Oprah as a conniving little parasite who wormed her way into "respectability" by man bashing and diving onto personal tragedy. Hell, this is typical of most talk show hosts anyway. But I'll listen to anything once before dismissing it as bullshit.
I never once trust tabloids on anything and I never pay for them. I also don't watch them on TV. If I want a news story, I'll go to CNN or some other global news station. And even then, I'm guarded about how much I believe. Jon Benet Ramsey changed my way of thinking about TV news.
Amber Frey's case is one where she didn't know Scott Peterson was married until the police approached her and said "his wife is missing". (Or so she says.)But she did the right thing and in my opinion the smart thing. She got a lawyer. She announced on TV under professional guidance that she had been misled and that she was his secret mistress, even though she "didn't know" about Laci. She told her story completely only after the case was over and Peterson was convicted. I'm not sure how much to believe because I wasn't there, but I see this case as a rare exception to the usual "listen to what I have to say" crybaby story. Scott Peterson was caught in a web of lies. He strung her along and she got it both on tape and in certifiable documentation to support her side of the story. This book is more of a warning than it is a cash cow. People are scum, but anyone can prevent this from happening to them, even your run of the mill "dumb blonde". Because of the way she handled herself, I believe her story much moreso than I believe Scott Peterson.

You are my new hero. You have openly voiced what has been brewing in the inner confines of my mind for months now. Yes the media is full of sick little greedy vultures who capitalize on other people's misfortunes. And yes it causes me to sometime go into sickening deep -seated inner rages when I think about the sleaziness of it all.
But why not put the blame where the blame is really due also? WE ARE TO BLAME EVERY BIT AS MUCH AS THE VULTURES! Now I am not singling anyone here out personally, but my point is that tradgedy is what sells to the general public. Do you really think that anyone would tune in to a tabloid news show that dealt with nothing but cheerful human interest stories? Do you think that most newspapers would increase their circulation if they reported more upbeat and uplifting stories. While many of you would probably say that you'd prefer something like that you know in your heart of hearts that the general public would turn a blind eye to that kind of thing.
People only seem to tune in to tradgedies, war, and disaster. Ratings have proved it time and time again. So even though these types of events are certainly not the only things going on in the world, unfortunately they will always take center stage. What's important is that you don't let it distort your point of view of the world. Remember for every tradgedy that you see repeatedly on the daily news ad-nauseaum there are honest to God miracles happening on a daily basis that don't fit the media's standards for ratings grabbers. In other words, don't let the media bring you down! ;)

I could be wrong here, but they could be people who had just watched their house get destroyed and are too poor for insurance, so they try and build themselves up again by selling their videotape. Don't comment if you don't know their circumstances.

I had this same feeling when 9/11 happened. Every twenty minutes, the news anchor would go as such:
NEWS ANCHOR: Oh, and we've just got some breaking news into the station. It seems we have a new angle of the plane hitting the first tower. Let's take a look at this. (Looks a footage) And I'm being told we can slow this down so we're going to do a slow motion shot of the plane hitting the tower...
How fucked up is that? If I knew someone on that plane, I sure as hell wouldn't want to watch the moment they died over and over again from an assortment of different angles and speeds. Oh look, my friend is alive...alive...alive....oh, now he's dead. Then, they would constantly show shots of people jumping from the building. They would even go as far as to zoom in and try to clear up the image so we could more clearly see it was a person falling towards his inevitable death. What were these fucknuts trying to see? If they could zoom in so far we could see the terror all over the guys face? Damn, if only they had cameras inside the plane to capture the footage, that would've been the presses wet dream.
I'm glad this was brought up as it was and is something that disgusts me to this day.

The cynical bastard in me says that some people love death and destruction , it's good for business , the bigger the tragedy , the more potential profit . And if some nice looking young woman is involved somehow , all the better , ala that Jessica babe that was ambushed in Iraq , she was camera friendly , get ready for your closeup .

Its incerdibly annoying!
Just today I saw a promo for a news program 'Tsunami! Killer Wave!"
UGH
Its obvious theyre in it for ratings beyond just 'telling the news'. Thers this guy in my hometown of Grapvine TX. He parks his butt on a corner of a deserted, broke down gas station every day by the local target, hooks up a mic to an amp, and just starts preaching. To no one. Now THERES someone who just wants to get the word out! Give this guy some fuckin money!
Also, something else been buggin me. I was just sitting back and thinking to my self, "Self, who the hell decides which murders are more 'marketbale'????
There are what, thousands! or murders every year. And all I fucking hear about is Laci Peterson, "New information in the Jean Benet Ramsey death" or any of those otehr fuckers. Seriously, who decides which death is more newsworthy? Why do SOME get this much coverage, and others get none. Because they think it'll get ratings.
Again I say
UGH

You guys ought to watch Network, an excellent movie that is about just this sort of thing.

That's one of the main reasons I haven't seen Titanic or Pearl Harbor. I just don't see the reason to watch movies about people who died tragically. And making up fictionalized love stories surrounding these events makes it even worse for me.
A couple of coworkers and I had a similar discussion a few months after 9/11. We were wondering who would make a movie 50-60 years from now about a fictionalized love story that ends in tragedy. It made us sick.

I live in Indonesia and you have no idea how sickening the TV stations here have been in exploiting the tragedy. They show the dead bodies, the survivors crying, children with their huge eyes, while the theme from Schindler's List playing in the background.
Almost every morning they broadcast a live telephone call between a survivor and their family who happened to be in another part of Indonesia. The conversation of course, is barely intelligible because all the sobbing and crying.
I may have sounded like an insensitive bastard. Perhaps I am, but instead of cheap exploitation of the victims, I'd rather see something more optimistic that give all of us hope to stop mourning and start rebuilding.

That would seriously piss me off also. My heartfelt sympathies go out to you and anyone you know who's been affected by this tradgedy. It will take time, but things will get better. Hang in there bro!

So you're not going to watch the inevitable Tsunami TV movie starring Rob Lowe and Ming-Na from ER? (guranteed it will be on within the next year or 2...sadly:( )
I agree with most of your rant.

Thanks MrBlonde. Fortunately I live nowhere near the disaster area and none of my friends and family was affected directly by the tragedy.

Jeo4, you an' me, my man. I'm with you all the way.
Tsunami - I heard about it from my bro and decided right then and there that I was NOT going to watch anything on TV about it, and instead, went into NOAA's website and checked it out. I learned my lesson about "tragedy overdosing" after 9/11. No thanks. Oh, and about 9/11, those coins that were "minted from actual silver recovered from Ground Zero" made me wanna puke. My fiance and I donated money to the tsunami victims via Red Cross and pretty much dropped the topic after that.
Re: Amber Frey. In my opinion, and the Modesto Police's as well, the case would not have broken had she not come forward. She did everything right, abided by the law, and spoke up so that the tabloids wouldn't have control of the story. She hired a powerhouse attorney and respected the law. She, too, is a victim of Scott Peterson, and has a right to tell her story. As she put it, Scott Peterson had the affair, she thought she was in a relationship. I say leave the girl alone.
I think the biggest example of whoring on behalf of a tragedy would have to be the deluge of trash that followed the OJ Simpson trial.

The part about her aiding the prosecution may be true , maybe , but i have a hard time believing she had no clue S Peterson wasn't married . How long was she involved with him , either she is totally clueless , which should have negated any sort of testimony , or she is a cold , calculating bastard .
I go with the latter , who is coming out ahead after all the dust settles , this conninving gimp who portrays this victim facade in public , but who is reaping all the spoils now because of what happened . She saw an opportunity to cash out , and she took it . The other woman and man are out of the way , and she can scam all the money and publicity she wants now . Not saying she planned the murder in any way , but she def saw a way to rake in the millions when it did happen , and like i said , i don't think she's as innocent as she's making it seem , freak , i wouldn't be suprised if maybe she did have something to do with it , and she found a way to pin all the blame on S Peterson , but i don't want to get all conspiracy theory on everyone .
