Hi. Before I start the subject let me point out that if any moderator feels this thread is out of place, by all means move it. I didn't know if I should place this on the Best and Worst, DVD Discussion, LOTR or Rant boards.
So, my point is this:
Many of you have by now seen lots of movie documentaries. There are some bad ones, others the basic stuff, and just a few really excellent. The ones from the extended editions of LOTR, "Indiana Jones" or "Empire Of Dreams" of the "Star Wars" trilogy come to mind. They are wonderfully done, don't you agree?
Recently I watched the extras from "The Return Of The King" EE DVD, and in the end, after literally crying (a first in a doc!!!) in the last sections ("The End Of All Things" and "The Passing Of An Age"), I thought: "Man, it would be awesome if this ROTK:EE documentary could be nominated for Best Documentary at the Oscars!!"
I ask: could this be possible? Nominate a movie documentary to "Best Documentary"? I know there are rules and all, and I remember that controversy about Fahrenheit 9/11 not being elligible to best documentary because it was aired on TV.
The ROTK EE documentary is quite big (What, four or five hours? Maybe more...). If they could somehow cut it to two hours, maybe then...
So, what's your take on this? Could a movie documentary be nominated for "Best Documentary" at the Oscars (or even other awards ceremonies) if they were good enough?
