:D

I seriously am pissed with all the negative word. I'm going to link you all to a review of Dogville that really sums up all my feelings towards the critics hating it because of it's anti-americanism.

A lot of the critics simply are whiny about it(Waaa he's making fun of America waaaaa)or don't get the point(it's more about human nature than America)

I agree with everybody complaining about it's anti-American sentiments...yet at the same time it's in my top ten of the year.

So does that SESSION 9 .gif apply to me as well?

Well, fuck me then.

The anti-Americanism, which is cheap and uncalled for, is the least of Dogville's negative qualities. It's poorly acted by everyone, Kidman and Caan in particular. The pretentiousness of Lars von Trier goes through the roof on this one. I knew he was a pompous asshole ever since Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark, but at least those had good scripts and excellent performances by Emily Watson and Bjork. Here, he just decided to forget all that and wallow in his shit like the pathetic swine that he is. He's a lazy, arrogant sonofawhore. The script is puerile and misogynist and the final product is a bore. A gigantic, ostentatious bore of epic proportions.. and THE worst movie ever made.

Oh, I thought you meant critics of the movie in general. Anyway, Dogville blows.

I thought Kidman and Caan did great performances in the movie. I will admit though that Trier is one pretentious fucking asshole, and this is the only movie from him I've liked.

Rent THE FIVE OBSTRUCTIONS, and you'll see von Trier in a state of mind that makes him look like a Bond villain. One of the good ones, like Blofeld, not a shit one like Louis Jourdan in OCTOPUSSY.

I find critics who say dogville is anti american bizarre. The movie, monster was WAY more critical of america than dogville, but no one moans about that. If I was being controversial I could suggest if dogville was made in the USA and not europe no one would be moaning. But I'm too nice for that ;)

Besides, every TV station in the world pumps out crap like friends and the OC every day which show how great and wonderful the USA is, so is a counterpoint once in a while that hard to take? Really?

This is one of those times I have no choice but to concur with you, JCR.

I absolutely love the film, it's just stupid that all these critics don't like it.

Forget the anti-Americanism from someone who's never stepped foot on our soil, forget everything that makes von Trier the punk that he is....I still hated hated hated this movie. It bored me to tears, had terrible acting and awful direction. As a movie, I just hated the thing, so I don't disagree with most of the critics who concur.

Calling Dogville anti-American is completely off the mark. Nobody would call it anti-Danish if it was set in Denmark, where von Trier lives. Plus, the characters in the movie have very Danish characteristics. It's a skewering of humanity, not Americans.

It's still not a great movie, though. It's decent, but it's pretentious and kind of tedious. It's brilliantly acted and with a realist message and a chilling ending, but I couldn't get sucked into it like I did with the two Riget miniseries, or Breaking the Waves, or Dancer in the Dark. 6/10.

The message I got from DOGVILLE: "America can be a cool place, but some Americans can be real bastards."
