Francois Ozon's best film to date. Oscar worthy performances from stars Stephane Freiss and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi mark this cleverly structured look at a failed relationship utterly compelling from the hideous opening to the hopeful last frames.

Gorgeous, near silent, romance/...that'd be telling from Kim Ki-Duk, one of Korea's most versatile and impressive talents.

Another exceptional film from French auteur Francois Ozon. The second of a tilogy on the subject of mourning it features an exceptional leading performance from Melvil Poupaud and fine support from Ozon's 5 X 2 star Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi and Jeanne Moreau.

5: A Cock and Bull Story (5/5)

A return to form for British auteur Michael Winterbottom. Part adaptation of 'unfilmable' novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy and part mockumentary about the impossibility of making a film of The life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy it's laugh out loud funny and brilliantly clever.

6: In Your Hands (5/5)

The 50th, and last, official dogme film. A story about miracles happening in the most unlikely place (a women's prison). Yes there's shades of The Green Mile but this is a far better film, particularly impressive is a sensetive performance from Trine Dyrholm.

7: A Very Long Engagement (4/5)

Reteaming with his Amelie star Audrey Tautou Jean Pierre Jeunet uses her to much better effect in this charming romantic thriller set in World War One. Tautou is wonderful, funny and charming and there are excellent cameos from Marion Cottillard and Jodie Foster; proving that, even in a second language, she's one of the best actresses in the world.

Shamefully poor. In fact so bad that it defies attempts to encompass it's dreadfulness in mere words.

2: A Dirty Shame (1/5)
Title as review. Saves me a job. That being the only positive thing to say about this crashingly dull, stupid and painfully mirth free 'comedy'

3: Elizabethtown (1/5)
Mindbogglingly terrible on a level I didn't believe Cameron Crowe capable of. The most disappointing 2 hours I've ever spent at a cinema.

4: Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (1/5)
Laughably poorly acted, directed (if at all) by a computer and generally tedious 'climax' to modern cinema's most overrated series of film. Please God, never let George Lucas ner a pen or a camera again.

5: Somersault (2/5)
Beautifully shot but boring and exploitative coming of age drama. It swept the board at Australia's film awards, making me wonder if it was in fact the only film of its year produced there.

6: Don't Move (2/5)
Despicably poor and morally vomitous. Avoid

7: Robots (2/5)
Unremittingly tedious and unfunny children's film, why can't people learn from Pixar?

8: The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (2/5)
Awesomely miscast (MOS DEF?) adaptation of Douglas Adams that cuts alot of the best jokes (how the babel fish disproves God) in favour of a boring 'love tory'.

9: The Devil's Rejects (2/5)
Vile compilation of all the bits that Rob Zombie half remembers from other horror films, notable chiefly for Sheri Moon's lovely bottom.

10: Dear Frankie (2/5)
Worthy but dull family drama, beautifully shot though.

As Wong's 2046 is getting released in North America in 2005 and you are including it in your lists, I must clarify that it doesn't make the 2005 top 10 list because I already saw it last year. The same goes with the new Miyazaki.

It has been a strong year thus far, I have seen way more above average films than stinkers, but that could be because I'm picky, and the fact I've only seen about 50 movies in theaters.

Best of 2005

We've actually had a pretty good year so far. I just saw Wong Kar-Wai's 2046 last week and it's still resonating in my mind. A film hasn't stayed with me and moved me like this since EYES WIDE SHUT.

If you get a chance, check out THE BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY when it comes to DVD. Loved this film, and Sony Pictures Classics dropped the ball in marketing this film. It was a festival favorite at the Tribeca Film Festival this year, but was only out in theaters for about 3 weeks here in NYC. Barely any advertisements, and I think this film is great.

Caught an advanced screening of THE CONSTANT GARDENER a couple weeks ago up at Lincoln Center. Director of CITY GOD Fernando Mierelles was there for a Q&A afterwards. Tight, very well directed, intense thriller.

Also, NOBODY KNOWS comes out on DVD in Sept. Very depressing film about a mother who leaves here kids alone, and the older brother (who's only like 11) must raise them. Based on a true story, very moving. If you're in the city, you have to catch JUNEBUG. Satirical look at shallow big city dwellers vs. small town, red-neck America. (Because of the realism, this film pissed off my cousin so much he wanted to walk out). Judy Marte of RAISING VICTOR VARGAS gives another powerful performance in ON THE OUTS.

I don't have any runners-up quite simply because I don't feel comfortable with any of the choices from 6-10 on my top ten. None of them feel like top ten material for me and that could be due to my having not seen several movies still. Also, I haven't had a chance to see many independent or smaller films this year as you can probably notice by the fact that half of my list is probably made up of blockbusters. Saw A History of Violence (7/10) in theatres but it didn't do too much for me...am planning on a second viewing.

In the next week or two I'll be seeing Downfall, Transamerica, Chumscrubber, Brokeback Mountain, Walk the Line, Howl's Moving Castle, Mysterious Skin, Happy Endings, The Descent, Broken Flowers, Serenity, Mrs. Henderson Presents, Pretty Persuasion, Oliver Twist, The Great Raid, Syriana, Pride & Prejudice, Murderball, Corpse Bride, and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada so after that the list will probably be changed drastically. I'm probably gonna catch up on all my movie-watching in the next two months or so. And besides the ones I said above that I'd watch in the next week or two, there are many, many, many other movies I still have to get around to seeing - those above are just movies that I plan on seeing soon.

Like you said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, bullshit or not. Lately there has been a critical backlash against Crash, because while I do believe it to be a great film, it is particuarly heavy handded, convoluted, and, for lack of a better word, pretentious. What the film tries to acomplish, and I believe it does so successfully, is to show the absolute extremes of modern day racial conflict and the cathardic absolution that occurs after one does something completely opposite to what they've done in the past. For example, Matt Dillon molests the black womman (conflict), and then has to save her in the car on fire (absolution). On the flipside, Ryan Phillipe saves Terrence Howard from the police (absolution), and then flips around and shoots a black man because he automatically assumes he's taking a gun out of his pocket (conflict). Whether or not these characters would partake in both of their respective events in a one day period is up for argument, though the answer is probably not. The only truly "good" character in the film, who never does anything questionably, is the locksmith. My point is, though, that the way that the themes of racial conflict are presented in this film could very possibly entirely backfire in the mind of someone else, and they could, as Max did, end up hating the film. So stop with the bullshit talk.

First of all, I didn't bother to see those movies. They looked like crap to me. Even if I did see them and they lived down to my lowest expectations, why bother to include them in a "worst" list? Movies like those don't aspire to be anything more than what they are - crappy entertainment. Besides, crap CAN be fun. CRASH, on the other hand, isn't a crappy film. It's just full of crap and no fun to watch. It's the kind of sensitive and tolerant movie that tries so hard to flatter our sensitivity and tolerance. It would've been tolerable if it had anything new to say. But it said nothing new over and over. No movie annoyed, insulted, made me want to walk out more than CRASH.

You might not like Syriana since it's heavy on politics but you should give Munich a try. Sure, it may be a somewhat political movie but it also works as a really tight, intense and exciting thriller. Think of it more as a revenge thriller with some politcs instead of a political thriller.

My list has undoubtedly changed quite a bit over time as I saw films that I hadn't seen before and discovered new things about films that I had seen before. As far as I'm concerned, this is my absolute final list as I have seen everything that I wanted to from 2005, and plenty of films that, well, I didn't want to.

I will start with 5 honorable mentions, that just missed the list: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Sin City, Mysterious Skin, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Good Night, and Good Luck.
