So I saw this baby at Specs. It was the original Night of the Living Dead but with a new colored transfer and a commentary by Mike Nelson (Mystery Science Theater 3000). Anyone see this? It's like 15 bucks at Specs, I didn't know if it would be worth it or not.

Haven't seen this version but I have seen the old colorization of it and it was total garbage. Films that are shot in B&W should stay that way. Due to B&W's inherent differences to color, directors tend to utilize different cinematography techniques. By colorizing NOTLD all of Romero's use of contrasts and shadow that were used to such dramatic effect are ruined. I say if you must see NOTLD in color check out Tom Savini's remake that was actually shot in color.

Put it this way: grab Elite's NOTLD Millennium Edition DVD and stay away from everything else. Elite has the great extras and commentaries that matter, with none of the added scenes (which equal shit on a stick) and none of the coloured crap. See for yourself:

All this shows is that FOX discovered how to use Photoshop's tinting feature.

I love Night of the Living Dead and it's remake. But after seeing those captures I have to own this DVD simply as a companion piece to the Millenium Edition (whenever I buy it, at least). It looks like shit, yeah, but at the same time I just fall in love with the cheesiness of it. Plus Mike Nelson does a commentary and I love that guy. It'd be MST3K doing Night of the Living Dead...without Servo or Crow, though...

Well I own the Millenium Edition and must agree with Axe Grinder that it is the definitive version of NOTLD on DVD. It has the best transfer possible from the original 35 mm negatives and THX sound along with tons of extras. And more importantly, it is officially endorsed by George Romero himself.

Man those captures really look like ass! Did anyone else notice that Johnny's tie is the same color as the drapes behind Ben in the fourth capture? Good Lord that is fucking lame. Did they only have the 24 pack of Crayolas to work with?

You know they can't afford the 24 pack. They bought the 12 pack. They just had to mix and match.

It's just another example of pandering to dumb-ass, mainstream audiences.

"Oh, I don't like films with subtitles like Ringu."

Okay little Jimmy, we'll remake it so it's nice and American for you.

"Gee, thanks mister! Now how about fixin' them films that are in pesky black-and-white? My small, 21st century brain can't handle the dullness!"

Well, Night Of The Living Dead already has a remake to deal with that problem, Jimmy.

"Awww, shucks. And here I am with a big box full of different tinted piles of MONKEY SHIT™, and I've got nothing to cover with it."

Now don't go saying that Jimmy. After all, the original Night Of The Living Dead has no copyright so we can just release our own version, painted over with your monkey shit™! Now, you see that flame on the end of the torch? Gimme some of that yellow shit, and a little bit of orange shit, and let's roll it up into a big ball then smear it over the flame.

"Golly mister! It looks nothing like flame, but it sure is mighty pretty!"

That's right Jimmy! It's called MIXING! And it's a poor substitute for the original black-and-white composition! But who cares!

"I love you, mister."

Hold on now Jimmy.

And so was created a classic.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why FOX, Paramount and Warner Bros. should be barred from producing their own DVDs.

The sad part is that Anchor Bay's Special Edition of NOTLD is just as worse, adding in 'new scenes' which totally destroy the film and make it darker than it has to be (read: a new scene involving the first zombie in the film makes him into a pedophile). Totally uncalled for.

I agree with the 1st part...

In regards to the 'New Scenes', you're talking about John Russos version of "Night of the Living Dead 30th Anniversary Edition" this is an abomination!!! Romero had NOTHING to do with it!!!

Russo will ride Romero's coat tails because NOTLD is the only thing that he was ever involved with that was a major deal. Unlike Russo's own work like "The Majorettes", Santa Claws" and "Midnight"!!! Romero is a true filmmaker!!! John Russo is a talentless HACK!!!

I got the b&w and coloured versions on DVD free last Halloween when I bought a sunday newspaper (News Of The World, I think). I don't like the coloured version in the slightest.

That would be the only reason to buy it. For another Mike Nelson commentary track, pick up the Special Addiction of Reefer Madness. It's also colorized, but it doesn't matter. Hilarious stuff.

Sweet. I wanted to get that movie. Now that I know Mike does the commentary for that I'll be picking that up too.

Being that NOTLD is my favorite movie, I'll be damned if I ever own this. I can't add anythign else to what people on here have already said. That looks like complete shit. Looks like that colored it then had a homeless person piss all over it. I absolutly will never own or watch this. I am very very happy with my Milliennium version.
