It really depends where you live.
If you live in the UK (or can play Region 2 discs), this is easily your best bet: http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00013YQEW.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
If you live in the US though and had the money I'd buy this one off eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=617&item=6359463732&rd=1
It's got both films, plus the subtitles are in English.

Nice collection. Although I've heard that the 2 disc collector's edition has a grainy transfer and that the extra scenes don't really add that much to the story. So I just bought the regular version. I actually just recently ordered this from an import DVD shop and it just arrived today! I can hardly wait to watch it!
In regards to regions, I have a regionless DVD player and burner that can convert to region 1 so I'm all set there.

I've got the 2-disc tin and I have to say, I thought the transfer was very good. Granted, the extra scenes at the end of the film serve only to confuse (possibly due to something getting lost in translation), but the additional scenes throughout the rest of the movie are very interesting and add a lot of backstory to the characters (especially the basketball scenes and Mistuko's flashback).

If your TV/DVD has a NTSC signal, like mine, get the Battle Royale 2Disc Starmax Release (Korea). A fulload of Extras and a crisp transfer. It's this one:

That plus a carboardy covering.
Oh and these two are DVDs of the Special Version. Because, you know, that's the version of BR you want.

Crap, forgot to mention. The Starmax release (Korea) doesn't have english subtitles for the extras (but does for the movie).

Well I finally watched this badboy last night and it did not dissapoint. A biting social commentary on the insane competetiveness of Japanese culture full of gory and violent deaths. I loved it!
The weird thing was that I first tried to play this on my PC on a regionless player and it kept freezing up on me. However it worked like a charm on my PS2. Is it normal for a PS2 to play region 3 DVDs? I didn't think it was possible.

I'd try to go to DVD Basen (http://www.dvd-basen.dk) or DVD Beaver (http://www.dvdbeaver.com) to check out reviews and comparisons (DVD Beaver especially).

I myself am partial to the Tartan NTSC Region 0 version of Battle Royale. They're hard to get nowadays, though: if you're lucky, you might be able to pick one up here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000068LB5/202-3330629-1732658). Even if they aren't in stock, it's possible you could get one from a personal seller on the same site.
Oh, and for more information on the DVD options for BR, this site (http://www.battleroyalefilm.net/video/index.html) would also suit you well.
