People will always misquote movies. It's natural to forget the way a line is spoken, but it's when the offending party insist that their version is the correct one.

I spent an hour convincing a fool that Humphrey Bogart doesn't once say "Play It Again, Sam" in Casablanca. The line is "Play It, Play "As Time Goes By"".

What other misquoted lines get on your tits?

But it's accepted wisdom that it's "Play it again, Sam".

Much like James Cagney is famous for the line "You dirty rat". Words he never uttered on screen.

I guess it's that old agage about printing the truth or printing the legend.

James Cagney is always being misquoted. Another fine example is in White Heat:

"Made it, Ma! Top Of The World!"

"Luke, I am your father." has been misquoted to death.

its actually "No, I am your father." Vader/Empire Strikes Back

It doesn't bug me much, but it would if someone argued that it was the actual version.

I have argued with people about the Star Wars line.

I usually correct people when they misquote, but they don't usually argue it. I don't feel like a know-it-all, I just want people to be right.

These don't bother me so much, but on a similar topic, I do get a little irritated by the customers who come into work and (meaning WITHOUT A PADDLE), ask, "You got that UP A CREEK movie?"

A lot of this stems from the rather un-official 'sequel' "Play it again, Sam"

So... there we are.

People I know would often misquote the famous Mae West line from She Done Him Wrong as "Why don't you come up and see me sometime?" when it is actually "Why don't you come up sometime and see me."

It doesn't bother me though, as long as one doesn't argue over it.

Before I saw Sunset Boulevard, I thought for years that the last line of the movie is "I'm ready for my close up, Mr. DeMille.", and to this day I still get it wrong at times, with the actual quote being "All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close up." and all.

I wonder if this is a product of people watching 70's and 80's TV.

I misquote movies a lot.
"I'm the queen of the world!"

God, was that embarrassing.

Yeah, the Star Wars shit is awful. My name is Luke, so my whole life I hear: "Luuuke, I am your father!" followed by laughter. Like I haven't heard that one before. Or "Luuke, use the force", in Darth Vader voice, even though Darth Vader would never tell Luke to use the force.

But the *worst* and one of the most common is Taxi Driver. Its always (in thick Brooklyn accent" Eh, you talkin to me?" Or even worse, they get fucking Scarface and Taxi Driver mixed up and say "You talkin to me" in a Cuban accent. Hrrrr.

9 times out of 10 no even knows that quote is from Taxi Driver, nor have they ever even heard of the film. Great.

I've seen The Life Aquatic four times already, and have still found people arguring with me over whether or not it's "stipper" or "script girl"

It drives me nuts, because it's always people who've seen it only once, and they'll never answer why a stripper would always be taking notes, and engaging in filmmaking aspects.

All of this happens at IMDb, though -- I had one guy tell me he was friends with Wes Anderson, and his signature was a misquote from Rushmore: "I've been married to the sea for a long time."
