View Full Version : Is there a classic horror movie that you're just not into?

There very well could be a similar thread out there but alas my search wasn't coming up with anything. Anyway, I was just wondering which otherwise highly regarded horror flicks that some of my fellow schmoes just aren't that into. These movies should be ones that the majority of genre fans think are swell, but that you personally just really aren't a fan of. In my case, I would have to go with Suspiria. Blasphemy, I know. I'd only heard good things about it, so I picked up and prepared to have my socks blown clean off, and I've gotta say I was thoroughly unimpressed. That's all, happy posting, mofos.

Dawn of the Dead
John Carpenter's The Thing
Hellraiser
The Last House on the Left

Heard so many incredible reviews and opinions before actually sitting down to view this quadruplet. Wasn't impressed in the least. As a matter of fact, was mostly bored off my ass.

Cabin Fever- This movie is too cheesey for it's own good IMO.

Puppet Master and its legion of sequels.

Halloween movies- all except the first two.

THE SHINING. Creepy, but doesn't make that leap into downright scary.

THE EXORCIST. I know a lot of people say this to brag, but I first saw it around 16, and I thought it was a comedy. A little girl jacking off with a crucifix, throwing up on doors and spider-crawling down stairs? I thought it was fuckin' hilarious -- in the good way.

Every "classic" horror movie from the 70's. I know how that sounds. But TCM, Changeling, Halloween, the whole lot.

Phantasm - I may have to give this another chance, but I thought it was incredibly weak.

The Haunting - Most people rave over this one, but I was bored out of my skull for most of it.

Rosemary's Baby - It may be that I can't stand anything Roman Polanski has done, but this one took me four tries to get through. Not a mark of a great film.

I never could get into Phantasm, The Exorcist, or The Howling.
I appreciate them for what they are, but I could just never really get into them.

As far as oldschool is concerned, I never was much of a Mummy fan. Although I love Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, Creature, and The Invisable Man. Just not a Mummy fan I suppose.

Alien- I just couldn't believe how boring this movie was. Didn't think it was scary either; just.... boring.

I cant get into anything Argento or Fulci. I found the Exorcist, Rosemarys baby, and the Omen very dull. I never made it through The Shining in just one sitting, its to long for what it is.

Phantasm - Just plain boring and not scary at all. I dunno, I never found interdimensional travel to be scary in the horror movie sense. Plus those midgets just annoyed me.

The Exorcist - Scary when you're trying to fall asleep. Otherwise, it just didn't work for me. Nice camera work in some places, but not enough to blow me away. I didn't get lost in the story and I didn't care about the characters.

The Fearless Vampire Killers - I heard nothing but good reviews of this movie, so I said thought "What the hell, Roman Polanski seems like a cool director and it's a low budget vampire flick...I'll buy it!" Two weeks later I sold it to a used DVD shop. I can't even begin to explain why I hated this movie. Everyone said it was atmospheric and creepy as well as funny. A) It was about as atmospheric as my grandmother's attic. And B) It was as funny as my grandmother's jokes. (I love ya grandma)

Suspiria - good score, has its moments, but for the most part, nothing happens.

Inferno - just like Suspiria, absolutely overrated.

*when it comes to Argento, I prefer is straightforward slasher giallo films, not his supernatural crap, like the above two. Opera, Deep Red, The Bird With The Crystal Plummage and Phenomena are much better films.

Dressed To Kill - Despite that I'm a big fan of Michael Caine's work, I have a hard time getting into this movie. Maybe because it feels dated, I'm not sure. All I know is, it has its moments, but I can't help but feel "blah" when I watch it. Not to mention the incredibly unnecessary final shock sequence; it felt tacked on for no other reason than to add one more cheap shock. Poor, Michael Caine.

The Evil Dead - this movie gets so much overrated praise, its amazing. All I know is the gory possession nonsense is kind of fun to watch, but it gets redundant by the hour mark.

Army of Darkness - I like my horror to be cheesy, but not chedder cheesy. This film is incredibly overrated.

*of Evil Dead films, I prefer "Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn." Much better film the either of the above.

To tell you the truth, I thought Bram Stoker's Dracula was a little too dramatic and not horror. I could sit through it, but I don't think I could enjoy it like I do with other vampire flicks. Plus, it didn't have Bela Lugosi in it.

I'm with TheAxeGrinder on Bram Stoker's Dracula. Neo as Jonothan Harker? Eeeew. I've kept the Dvd for Tom Wait's incredible performance as Renfield. He totally owns every frame he's in.

I'm also not the biggest Ringu fan. Come to think of it, I have yet to find ay Asian horror film to truly live up to its hype, barring the love-lily Battle Royale. And don't get me going on the remakes.

Same goes for Tenebre (very predictable).

Alien and Aliens

Fulci's Zombie

Lugosi's Dracula

Suspiria (Granted I enjoyed it, and it had amazing music and murders but it dragged way too much and had too many throwaway characters for me to consider it one of the best horror movies ever.)

Opera and Inferno weren't that great either. I think the only Argento film I've enjoyed so far is Tenebre, but I still need to see Deep Red among others.

Final Destination (Might not be considered a classic, but what the fuck is the big deal. That movie bored me to death. The sequel was much better, but still not great.)

White Zombie and plenty of other 30's and 40's movies.

I enjoyed SUSPIRIA, but I don't really see how it deserves the "classic" status. I was a bit disappointed with Night of the Living Dead, but I loved Dawn, both the original and the remake

Suspiria, after seeing it for a second time i dont see what the big deal is

The Bela Lugosi DRACULA. Ace atmosphere, but the pacing was dreadfully slow and filled with stilted moments where I was damn near screaming, "GET ON WITH IT!"

I admire the sequel, DRACULA'S DAUGHTER, eons more so.

I'm not crazy about the original "Dracula" either. It starts off well with great atmosphere, but when it comes down to it, it goes nowhere and nothing really happens. The movie loses its way halfway through.

The first half developed the main story concerning Dracula with the main characters and Dr. Van Helsing well enough. It's halfway in when Van Helsing doesn't see Dracula's reflection in a mirror and realizes he's a vampire... but nothing happens during the rest of the movie.

It's all talk, talk and talk with only a few good confrontations between Dracula and Van Helsing. They should have tried for more suspense in the last part, but they don't.

What was especially a waste was the one thing that does happen in the last half - Dracula "feeds" the heroine his everlasting blood, so that he she can live etertanally on with him as his bride. This added a potential element of danger for the characters, but the overall execution of it was disappointing.

I'm not trying to make this thread all about "Dracula," I'm just discussing my disappointments with it. I don't hate, it's just not the classic its made out to be. I can only give it a ** or **1/2 out of 4 stars.

The direct follow ups to this, "Dracula's Daughter" and "Son of Dracula" were pointless. They killed off Dracula in the original, so they created offspring for him along as his decendents in history. I didn't like "Daughter," it was boring and felt tacky as a "Dracula" sequel. "Son of Dracula" was a little better with Lon Chaney Jr. as his blood-sucking son. That was better film with some good action, but it also felt tacky. Back then, it was big to have sequels to "Frankenstein," "The Invisible Man," etc., but I think they should have left "Dracula" alone.

For me, SON OF DRACULA came off as goofy more than frightening, thanks to Chaney being seriously miscast as Alucard. But I thought the story of DRACULA'S DAUGHTER was actually rather interesting, the story moved at a better pace, and I especially enjoyed the mystique of the lead actress playing the title character.

A couple of winters ago, I was on a classic horror movie kick and tore through nearly all of these series (I've still yet to see the latter three in the INVISIBLE MAN legacy). DRACULA was decent but a disappointment, and SON OF DRACULA was hard to take seriously, but DRACULA'S DAUGHTER stood out for me as the smoothest and most atmospheric of that series.

Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Any of the Friday the 13th movies.

Final Destination a classic?
Great idea made into forgetable teen bullshit. If it is a classic, it's overrated, but I don't think it's considered a classic.

The original Halloween does it for me, I've heard nothing but good reviews for it as well and was shocked to find myself not actually liking the movie that much, I think I might have to re-watch it.
