I dont realyl know why this popped into my head, but lately i've been checking out The Fog every night, and I realyl wajnt to see more films with atmosphere as awesome as this.

Movies like The Others, The Ring, to an extent, and Dead End all have that really great, foggy, kind of creepy ass atmosphere that I want more of!

So, to the schmoes what other films can you think of kick as much ass in this way?? I just want to behold more movies with that kind of great, subtle atmosphere that doesnt rely on 'boo' scares and quick cutting to get its job done for it. I want oldschool dammit!

:D

Halloween 4 has outstanding atmosphere. So much in a sense, that the Haddonfield town itself is practially a character in the film. The best atmosphere the H-series has to offer.

Cube pops into my head because of the claustrophobic and repetetive nature of the different rooms. It eventually drives all the characters to the brink of insanity.

I definitely agree with Session 9, The Fog, Black Christmas, and Silent Night, Bloody Night. The atmosphere alone gives you the creeps.

Tourist Trap is another one, with the isolated, desert setting. No wonder so many movies in the 70s, even non-horror, were into filming in the desert.

Also:

My Bloody Valentine (great town setting and music)
Visiting Hours (for making a big, crowded hospital so scary)
Dagon (another creepy seaside setting)
The Howling
Silver Bullet
Prom Night (mostly for the night school scenes)
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
NOTLD
NOES #1
When a Stranger Calls (the house scenes)

The Overlook Hotel from Kubrick's version of The Shining was a perfect horror atmosphere. Old and isolated by arctic-like weather conditions for six months out of the year, it really was a creepy place. And it had those awful little girls running around in it. It also had the ghost of some guy who liked to give fellatio in bear costume. Scary place!

It's contemporary, but I'll go with "The Mothman Prophecies".

Underrated film, creepy-as-hell atmosphere.

I'd have to say that those films taking place in isolated areas are king when it comes to horror, and no film does it better than Alien. There's something about being stuck in space, having an alien munching on the crew and no way to get help, leaving Ripley to take down the Xenomorph herself. How friggin' creepy is that?

The farm-house from Night of the Living Dead.

Actually, Romero and his crew found a house on the cheap. It was condemned so it gave George free reign to do what ever they wanted to it. Where that old glorious edifice once stood is now a turf farm...

"Night of the Living Dead" a CLASSIC in every sense of the word!

Phantasm - That morgue....that graveyard!

The Beyond - Lots of atmosphere...specially those scenes in the blind girls house. Spooky shit.

Horror of Dracula - Atmosphere is a character here...specially those scenes in the graveyard with Lucy running around with that little girl.

Friday the 13th part 6 - I love those final scenes in Crystal Lake...the wind is always blowing making the trees leaves move back and forth constantly and theres always shadows on the walls. Excellent example of atmosphere!

Atmosphere is what makes horror movies enjoyable. So there is nothing more that I love than an atmospheric horror movie

Just Before Dawn--great shots of the Oregon wilderness. Made the protagonists that much more believable

The Shining--I agree with everyone above, the Overlook is simply stunning

My Bloody Valentine---the mines were perfect for a slasher movie. Plus I agree that the music was pretty campy here

The Changeling--that mansion is probably the scariest house I have seen

Halloween 4--I agree with Nukem that the whole town of Haddonfield was probably the best portrayed since the original

Halloween 6---I loved the old strode house and the college campus here

Squirm--Lieberman does such an awesome job of portraying the typical small town in georgia.

The Final Terror---I need to see these thick woods for myself. Man the california redwoods seem so isolated from the world

Final Exam---best portrayal of a college campus. Reminded me of my old college which makes this nostalgic for all the right reasons

Friday pt 2----I feel the best camp setting along with Part 1. This one picks up seemlessly from the first one. Too many movies use totally different locales from the other sequals. This one is a perfect transition.

I would like to make a vote as well for the most un atmospheric movie around.

Eaten Alive...proves that movie on soundstages should be illegal. This one is painful to watch
