I recently finished watching this film (first time I ever saw it).... and I was wondering if anyone could explain the ending to me.

I've seen it but I didn't totally understand it either. Good film though that is very underrated in my opinion.

Okay, spoilers.

The house seems to feed on lives to keep itself looking young. Apparently the more the better, and it especially likes children according to the brother and sister who own it. When they are talking about taking care of their mother, they mean the house. Whenever someone gets injured, or dies, the house rejuvenates a part of itself. The strongest life force it seems to need is someone who betrays those people they love (Karen Black's character) to stay with the house (becoming "mother"). That's my interpretation anyway. The photo collection is a collection of the victims.
