View Full Version : House of 1000 Corpses: A Snuff Film? (some spoilers)

I watched House of 1000 Corpses on Halloween (one of the craziest horror flicks I've seen), and I just have a question about one part. Early on they're taken through the museum of serial killers by the psycho clown. During these scene there are flashes of footage of these various serial killers. Then the clown uttered the name "Ed Gein", a killer I'm fairly familiar with. Now the killer footage flashed by a bit too quick for me to tell for sure, but did they use legit footage of these serial killers for that portion of the movie?!

I'm not sure on how legit the footage was, but even if it was, it wouldn't make it a snuff film by any means.

I'm pretty sure that the footage was made specifically for the film. Gein and Fish never videotaped their exploits.

There are, however, photos of Gein's work (or atleast the aftermath.)

Having just recently listened to Rob Zombie's commentary on the "House" disc, I'm 99% sure that the footage was created specifically by Zombie and Co.
If I'm correct, Bill Moseley (Otis) played Ed Gein in the flashbacks.

You are indeed correct, they were very realistic looking flashes of film, that's for certain, but Rob Zombie never fails to impress. Bill Moseley was the actor behind Ed Gein.

He failed to impress with the entire movie IMO. HOTC is the biggest copycat film in a long, long time, showing that when it comes to horror, Rob Zombie has no originality in his entire body. I wonder what films he'll rip off in the sequel?

I didn't see any reason as to why to call it a copy cat of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Pretty far off in my opinion.

Ok, then another nasty analogy:
"Don't look so deep..." you don't go looking what somebody ate when they throw up all over your shoes.
Those two comments sum up what I think this film is.

personally, i liked the movie, i'm still so disappointed with it because we waited how long? and everybody kept rejecting it because it was "too bad" and all that so i'm expecting something like really bad ass or something to those means...

I don't share your appreciation for the movie, but I do share your disappointment. I thought HOTC was going to be this new innovation in the horror genre, and all we got was some tired rehashings of better films that came before.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, HOTC was a peice of shiot. Didn't like this film at all. Felt like one long music video. Blah.
Oh and I LOVE Bill Moseley.

I found the first three quarters of the film engaging, unique and well-done. The last quarter (IMO) went a little over the top and tried too hard. I lost interest. Overall, tho, a great effort by Zombie. I'm interested in seeing his future ventures into the industry.

I would definatly say what ruined this film was not a lack of creativity, but basically the lack of direction of the film and bad music video type editing, even bad for a B-movie... JMHFO

I don't see why people are bashing this movie.
It's his first movie and he's pretty much said it's an homage...or whatever you like to call it....to his favorite Horror movies, including The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
I think we should save judgment on his film making skills until The Devil's Rejects which, judging by the trailer, looks kick ass.
And I also loved House Of 1000 Corpses.

I never saw the connection that people made between House of 1000 Corspes and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The two films look and feel completely different in execution and style. If you're going off the "kids meet up with backwood psychotics" then yeah, there's a TCM similarity for you but that's about it.

Then again, it'd also be similar to: Last House on The Left, LHOTL2, TCM2, TCM3, TCM:TNG, TCM:2004, A Crack in The Floor, I Spit On Your Grave, and Deliverance amongst others.
Point is no movie, or form of art lives in a vaccuum, if something works than someone else is going to use it. HO1KC is no more of a rip off of TCM than TCM was of LHOTL (or was that the other way around? Oh well, you get the point.)
And The Devil's Rejects looks very Near Dark/ From Dusk 'Till Dawn-ish.

Yes, it is, it was a piece of shit!
But I would much rather forget the fucker than have to keep thinking of it and insulting it.
The day it disappears from my memory is the day I will see it again and whine some more.

I too wonder why some people say it's a rip of TCM. Just because of the kids get lost in backwoods and run into bad people. Again this has happened in more then just TCM. I love the movie, thought it was very orginal can't wait for the sequel.

That is not the only similarity. I can point out quite a few:
1. Takes place in the seventies
2. Just about the entire ending was taken from TCM (the girl runs onto the highway, trying to escape, is covered in blood, is hysterical, is nearly run over and then gets picked up.)
3. The fact that the house is a very old, secluded two story with a wide porch.
4. Wearing the girl's father's skin as a costume.
There are probably more, but my recollection of the movie is not great. I saw it once and was sickened. I didn't even think that that kind of shit could be expressed in a visual medium. I was with the movie up until the kids got to the house, then I totally lost track of the film. I thought Captain Spalding was hilarious, but the family was...truly horrific.
I had actually been anticipating this film, on the trailers it looked pretty friggin' cool. And I know its horror and meant to terrify you, but I found I just couldn't handle all the stuff in the film. That and I really couldn't figure out what the hell was going on half the time.**POSSIBLE SPOILERS** I would be like, "Okay, crazy psycho hillbilly family are ruthless murderers - I kinda get it." Then, BAM! you see this gruesome thing (Dr. Satan?) underground doing something to some thing thats puking up puss and starts chasing some chick thats in schoolgirl clothes. What the hell? **END SPOILERS**

No offense Red Whisper, but those aren't very strong comparisons. Many of the expoiltation horror films were set in the 70's and took place in old, secluded two story houses.
Also, I never remember anybody wearing somebody's father's skin in TCM at all. The only thing somewhat similar is Leatherface dolling himself up with makeup to take on personalities of other people.
Also, Denise at the end of HO1KC was not hysterical, not in a rush to escape, nor is she nearly run over. She was disoriented yes, but not hysterical. Also, Denise thought she already escaped so she wasn't worried. Not to mention the Cpatain Spaulding just comes to a stop when Denise waves him down to do so. Not very similar to the TCM ending in the long run.
Sorry!

THis movie admittedly wasnt all that great, and does however have similarities with a certain classic (TCM) but give Rob Zombie credit for at least attempting to capture that sick twisted feel of the 70s horror..... House of 100 Corpses was still better then half those shitty slashers we've been seeing lately.....

yeah thats what I was thinking, none of those things you mentioned really make HO1C a rip off of TCM again its stuff that tons of movies have used, and like Jaywolf said that ending that you said didn't even happen.

Personally, I liked the film, although I'm still waiting for that unrated version that Zombie says was filmed but was somehow 'lost'. Apparently, a version shown at film festivals used some of this supposedly 'lost' footage not present in the theatrical cut. Plus, the DVD Lion's Gate released is hardly what I would want in my collection, despite the great commentary by Zombie himself.

Well I enjoyed seeing what Rob Zombie could do. I mean he isn't Raimi or Romero but he made a decent film. But on the note of musicians making films I saw an article or an interview, can't remember which sorry, that Marilyn Manson was hoping to make a film too while in Germany. I wonder if like Zombie, who used his girl, Sheri Moon, Manson will use the delightful Dita von Teese.
