View Full Version : Disney is NOT the root of all evil

I'm doing an introductory sociology course at an atlantic canadian university, and today my love for movies resulted in me telling off a professor and dropping said course... Sound incredibly dumb? You betcha'.
Anyways, the class starts off with the professor (a crotchety, old, man-hating commy pyscho-bitch) going on a tangent about how Disney "recruits" young children through their movies which contain "hidden messages" of racism and misogyny, so that the wealthy white american producers and executives can make more money and keep paying minority labourers pennies an hour for the animation, all the while bringing up racist, sexist children who will one day replace them in order to continue the market of socially unacceptable entertainment.
Examples used included "Beauty and the Beast", which apparently shows that if a woman is in an abusive relationship, she should not leave him or seek help, but instead wait it out in denial in hopes of changing the man... And Little Mermaid, which teaches girls that they should abandon their roots and true identity if it will help them win "prince charming"... And Mulan, which shows that the only way a woman can be strong is by pretending to be a man... And I'm not even going to mention Alladin and Pocahontos, for all of the supposed racial issues... I swear, I'm not making a word of this up.
Anyways, I thought this was so ridiculously absurd I ought to share it. I'm laughing at it now, but sitting through that class this morning, I was almost like Bruce Banner trying to not turn into the hulk... Hippies can suck the fun out of everything.

Thats hilariously obsurd. What exactly did you say as you were telling him off?
Yeah, XvoorheesX...she sounds like a fucking idiot.

Well, I watched Aladdin and it made me go buy a carpet: so maybe she's right... hahaha!!!!
I can't believe that woman is a teacher!! That is fucking scary... Especially when people buy into the crap she's teaching... Good for you for dropping it...

The feminazi that you had for an instructor sounds hilarious! I had a woman with the same proclivities as my sociology instructor. It often seemed like she blamed men for everything that went wrong in her life. She also came up with some pretty wacky stuff! I'm still not sure how I managed to pass her class.
IMO Disney should be made to answer for their sleazy practice of taking time-honored classic cartoon films and making shitty formulamatic DTV sequels. Well that and Britany Spears!
Regardless of whatever conspiracy theories about Disney that you are laughing about-- the fact remains that Disney still fucking sucks!

I'm gonna get completely fuckin crucified here, but I've gotta admit the old crotchety cunt has some VERY valid points! (no I'm not kidding) :p

Since they are the film and animation industry's center of sleazy greed and poor artistic decisions, yes, I consider them the root of all evil. Well, maybe not THE root of ALL evil, but certainly a contributing root.
But that hidden message conspiracy? Yeah, it's bullshit.

Everyone in the class, myself heavily included, started to outright disagree with her, with every logical explanation. I told her that Disney doesn't so much use racial stereotypes as they do stock characters that kids can easily recognize, I corrected her by informing her that the animation is done by highly skilled professionals, I mentioned that a lot of disney movies feature strong, independent woman who overcome social norms to do what they believe in (Alladin, Mulan, The Little Mermaid...). I asked her if she attended Klan meetings or visited the cells of sex offenders and hate-crime perpetrators in order to question them on their love of disney movies. She just rolled her eyes - my thoughts exactly.

.... Didn't Mulan freaking reveal herself as a woman in the end?
That was a pretty kickass movie, btw.

Nope. If you look closely, it's just his knees.

Oh, and while we're at it... The cloud of dust and leaves in The Lion King doesn't spell "sex", it spells "SFX", and there's no phallic symbols on the cover of the Little Mermaid, it's just the design of the castle. Damn perverts...

Disney has been known to be accused of sending hidden messages in their movies, though none have been towards racism or anything that heavy. It was more geared towards sex.
The first one (that I recall) was the original VHS video cassette holder for The Little Mermaid. There was a huge penis shown as one of the towers within the castle. I still have that cassette to this day.
Another was were you could hear the Genie say, "Children take off your clothes", in Aladdin, though you can no longer hear it in the new DVD release.
The last incident was where Simba plops down on the cliff and the dust spells out, "sex" when it flies in the air.
Hidden messages within a Disney movie doesn't surprise me, though I think that teacher was reading into everything a little too much. I probably would have dropped out of the class too. Did you happen to report her to the Dean?

Unless it hurts public relations, Deans rarely give a shit.:)

It maybe just a tower, but it's definitely a circumcised tower.

Nope, and I don't intend to. Ridiculous as I think they are, she's entitled to her opinions. Me reporting her to the dean would cause nothing but a waste of time and efforts of everyone involved, and I don't want to cause any unnecessary trouble.

I don't know about the genie, but the rumour is that Alladin whispers it when the tiger is growling at him. According to the script he says "good kitty, take off and go".
The last incident was where Simba plops down on the cliff and the dust spells out, "sex" when it flies in the air.
According to Disney, it says "SFX", a nod to the sound department.

That story is hilarious. :)
I've heard stuff like that over the years and it just makes me laugh. People have to see perversion in everything.
I will, however, confirm that the Disneyland and Disney World theme parks are PACKED with little sexual things. I've worked in two different attractions in Walt Disney World and, among their "hidden Mickeys", both had sexually-graphic designs or other stuff referring to sex.
The people who made Disney movies weren't pervs. The imagineers who built the theme parks were -- probably taking inspiration from all these urban legends to actually squeeze in a couple real ones here and there.

I would smile, but with the heavy congestion I have crusting up my face it would hurt.
And Miramax can burn in hell for chugging Oscar's cock so much and delaying certain films for years. They are owned by Disney. Nuff said.
