Showgirls - Genuinely sexy, good story, funny scenes, and Elizabeth Berkley, with her somewhat maximal way of acting, was really not bad at all. - But above all, the ballet scenes were exhilarating!

Stop calling bad movies you like underrated. There's no shame in liking a few bad movies.
EDIT: Also, don't call movies that aren't underrated underrated. Once Upon A Time In The West is NOT underrated.

So I can finally admit I liked Titanic! Thank You!
Most under rated movie by the way is In The Line of Fire. I still think it's a great thriller every time I see it.

Paris, Texas
When people remember 80's cinema, this should appear alongside Raging Bull and Ran. (actually, it should appear above them both)

The Godfather Part III is pretty underrated.
but Barry Lyndon is even more underrated.

Mr. Adrenaline, your nick name seems very well chosen indeed. Now I strongly suggest you take some good pill and cool down. IMO Showgirls is badly underrated entirely regardless of your eventual heart failures, and I will certainly continue exercising my civil right telling people my opinions about just anything with or without your permission for it, because this is not the Soviet Union, and you are not God.

Good choice, Frank. Jacob's Ladder is an extaordinary film. But I think I have never had a more painful and depressing cinematic experience, and that may explain why many of us somehow prefer forgetting about it.

Well considering how viciously attacked Gigli was, I would probably call that the most underrated movie of all time. I'm saying it was a great movie but it certainly didn't deserve all the horrible reviews it got.
Also I loved Waterworld and The Postman as well. And some people actually consider them to be among the worst of all time. Pfffft! They are SO wrong!

And don't call them "Guilty pleasures", either, please. There's nothing wrong with liking junk, as long as it's not all you like.
Nice calls on Barry Lyndon and Paris, Texas.
The Hill. It's respected, but not as much as it should be.

Who is talking to who here. If I considered it junk I would hardly uprate it in the first place, would I. Now, each one his own Pope, fine with me, but I see no obligation accepting the arbitrary dogma of other people as mine, and you will have to live with that, and if Showgirls is "junk" in your opinion, the fact it's yours does does not necessarily render it status of Basic Truth to be accepted as normative premise of any discussion.
But I feel the real problem involved here is the collectivistic terror rule of Majority: when some people dare give voice to an opinion running somehow contrary to the official prejudice of the Crips and the Bloods, not a few members of these honorable collective bodies goes instantly diarrhoeic - but this their ailment, and there is no reason whatsoever for the environment to adopt it as their own.
Now let's talk some sense.
There are many a good movie in need of rehabilitation; but Paris, Texas is certainly not one of them, since this very respected film had good criticism. I have however not seen it myself. - Other good movies somehow original and deviating from expectations, and therefore misunderstood, would be Troublebound, Cat People and Romeo Is Bleeding. All three of these have considerable qualities the critics never saw since they were off genre and simply not expected to be there.
A particularly sad case is Salute of the Juggers. This is one of the very best post-disaster films I have seen; and I never saw Rutger Hauer better. Still, nobody seems to know about it even. I have no idea about what went wong in the market procedure.

Okay, a couple of things: one, I wasn't aiming that at you or Showgirls, a film I have some fondness for. So, no need to get mad about it.
Two, I wasn't really using the term "junk" as that much of a pejorative, in that case. Like I said, if you (and I mean a general 'you', not specifically you, Kraxpelax), like it and you can defend it, cool. Even if you don't want to defend it, it's still cool to you if you like it.
I just hate the smug, trite, weasel word term "guilty pleasure". Reading it overused by that sickening asshole Matt Roush has killed the term for me, for good. That was the main point I was trying to make.

As it also happens, I like Romeo Is Bleeding and I fucking adore Cat People, and always have, and I have gnashed my teeth at plenty of clueless and ignorant dismissive reviews of it, then and since.
(Siskel and Ebert both liked it, by the way, a major feather for them in my eyes back then...)

Those first three are globally considered classics, and Amores Perros is pretty well-liked too, so I wouldn't call them underrated. The Battle of Algiers is a good pick though.
Here are some movies that I love that don't seem to get much love or attention:
After Hours
Frantic
The Muppet Christmas Carol
Parenthood
Sweet and Lowdown
Three Colors: White (unfairly outshined by the other two in the trilogy)

What comes to mind for me might be a wierd choice to some of you. Seven (1995) because even though I know alot of people that really love it, critics just never recognized it as what it is, a masterpiece. They always talk about The Silence of the Lambs, and I never hear anything about Seven.

I would have to agree with Thursdy, Jackie Brown, and Barry Lyndon as all being overrated. I would have to add to that list though Hudson Hawk, great action comedy movie that deserves credit and respect.
Also I would like to add how you could think that La Dolce Vita is underrated, and Ikiru. Those movies are not only considered Great Movies by Roger Ebert, but also theyve won countless awards on many levels. Doesnt sound like an underrated movie to me.

Tom Stoppard's ROZENCRANTZ & GUILDERSTERN ARE DEAD with Gary Oldman and Tim Roth
John Frankenheimer's SECONDS with Rock Hudson
John Huston's THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER with George C Scott
Micheal Mann's THIEF
Sidney Lumet's EQUUS
Thats just a few off the top of my head that I believe deserve more appreciation and credit.

My first post, yeehaw. Here goes.
EXCELLENT two choices right there. I remember watching R & G with my Dad when I was just a kid and just loving it. The verbal tennis volley, brilliant! And Clive Owen can do no wrong in my opinion. Ok, King Arthur was weak, but still...
Ok, my addtions:
Life as a House-a brilliant Kevin Kline and a pre-Darth Hayden Christensen bring me to tears every time, girly yes but hey, I'm a girl so whatever.
The Long Kiss Goodnight-Purely for badass chick (Geena Davis) factor.
Iron Giant-A kid movie with an adult-sized heart.
Legend-Okay, okay, Tom Cruise was years away from Oscar nods but still, I loved and still love this movie. Tim Curry-The Lord of Darkness-holy cow...that headpiece supposedly weight like 50 lbs all by itself.

Heh. Good stuff.
I'm drawing a blank, so these are all I have for now. Remember, its my 1st time. Be gentle.

Yup. I disagree about Equus though, it's bloody barmy...and Dicky Burton goes way OTT with his to-camera monologues, the old ham!
I'd say...
Made In Britain
Roth plays Trevor, an articulate racist and product of Thatcher's Britain, bless it. He is STUNNING, the story is simple yet gripping (it's more window than plot) and the script is superb. It's as good as American History X and The Believer - better in my opinion, and far superior to the likes of Romper Stomper.

Enigma Top-notch performances, and the historical facts weren't fucked with.
Hideous Kinky Hey, if it was about licking arse, it's a good title. Beautiful film, though.
Return To Paradise Fucks me up a smidge, every time.
The Contender Oldman and Bridges. Decent writing.
Spider Ralphy should do more of this, and leave the fluff to the less gifted.
Van Helsing The tributes morph, not just the characters. Done well.

I wouldn't call these "most underrated films ever"
but movies I thought were good that I figured not too many people saw.
A Walk on The Moon
Tape-YES!
Hollywood North-Alan Bates is the reason to see this film.
In The Company of Wolves-Neil Jordan's take on Little Red Riding Hood-more of an adult take. Our fairy tales were a lot better before Disney sanitized them. To the person above who liked Legend, if you haven't seen it-check this out.
I tuned into Equus on TV about half way through it-had never heard of it and started watching because Richard Burton was in it and just couldn't stop watching because it was so bizarre, anyway, the last half, I liked.
Out of Sight.
It's pretty strange for a hip crime-themed movie to be not universally loved and praised, but this one definitely is, and it is by far
READ NEXT PART VERY CLOSELY

I agree with this. A lot of people thought that the movie was terrible, thinking it was lacking in action or excitement, but I thought it was a really interesting movie with good characters. It wasn't a traditional comic book adaptation and it was nice to see someone take that story and do something different wiith because a Hulk movie where he is just smashing everything would only be exciting for 20 mintues i think.
