Perfect Blue is an excellent (and violent) Thriller, Akira is great but incredible confusing. Metropolis is also great, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are 2 of the best animes i have seen. Blood: The Last Vampire is quite short (only 50 minutes) but is amazing
if you're interested in series, ill also highly recommend Neon Genesis Evangalion, Serial Experiments Lain, Macross Plus and X...also Outlaw Star is fun
hope these help
(im sure X-Nightcrawler with appear, raving about Wolf's Rain)

Vampire Hunter D and Vampire Hunter D II: Bloodlust, very cool movies about vampires.
Nausicaa of the valley of the wind, my favorite Studio Ghibli movie.
If you liked Ghost in the Shell, maybe you should check the sequel GITS 2: Innocence. Also there is a TV series called GITS: Stand alone Complex, that is good too.
FLCL. Fun and wacky anime by the creators of evangelion.
Cowboy Bebop, pretty cool series.
The ones that Cronos mentioned will be my first choice.

also if you can find it, Battle Angel Alita is pretty damn good with some nice animation (although it is only half the story)

*appears and raves about Wolf's Rain* :D
Ahoy, Wolf's Rain is the best damned anime series I have ever seen (watching it right now, in fact) it's perfect from every angle. Another series I would reccomend, of course is the famous and damned fantastic Neon Genesis Evangelion.
But if it's features (movies) what you want, here are some I reccomend:
-Perfect Blue
-Spirited Away (G-rated anime but fantastic nonetheless).
-Bounty Dog
-Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' On Heaven's Door
And of course, the Neon Genesis Evangelion movies once you've seen the series.
Other fantastic series I can reccomend are Blue Seed, Serial Experiments Lain (*questions existance of self), Silent Möbius, Geneshaft, Hellsing (the Wolf's Rain of Tagia_Romero) and a few more.

Have you reviewed Lain, X?
Lots of good suggestions here, I particularly liked "Spirited Away" and "Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind".
If you liked "Ghost in the Shell", you should check out "Mobile Police Patlabor" which is really good and by the same director.
But, if you like action and like a bit of humour, you should check out "Gunsmith Cats".
But my personal favorite of late is a gem called "GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka", if anyone else here has seen it, I'm sure they'll back me up that it is a must-see.

I know this is an old thread, but I just watched Ninja Scroll and would recommend it highly.

I second that, I really enjoyed Ninja Scroll.
Macross Plus has already been recommended, and rightfully so. Terrific animé, one of my all time favourites.
There's a small show known as Virus Buster Serge, I bought the DVD box set early last year, 3 DVDs, 12 episodes, maybe not to everyone's liking but I enjoyed it for what it was.

I just begun Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, I'm in episode 3 and really digging it. The song in the opening is bloody brilliant.
Seems like I will enjoy that one. You might want to give it a try. I also need to watch the Ghost In The Shell movies, which I'm pretty sure will explain what I'm lost in.

As the resident AKIRA expert, I've gotta recommend it. Yes, it is confusing, so watching it twice is necessesary for most people. But it's a kickass sci-fi thrill ride of apocalyptic proportions.
However, the manga source material is better and mindblowingly awesome as well.

GITS: SAC is an amazing series, i love the Tachikowa (sp?), the song is also great
the films have little in common with the series, it was produced as a seperate story to them (the first at least)

there isnt a show of this, its an amazing film, i recently got the Tin and had fogotten how beautiful the animation was, its also not as confusing as it is said to be, as long as you pay attention
also, i recommend Gungrave, although its heavily character driven when there is action its excellent and wonderful to watch

So I don't need the GITS movies to get the series? Because their technology is losing me from time to time.

FLCL is the best anime series ever.

There is a very strange piece of work entitled 'Dead Leaves'. I recommend this very strongly if the viewer is open minded, there aren't any children in the house (or within three blocks) and one's idea of what anime is remains fairly fluid.
If these conditions exist then Dead Leaves is exciting, daring in both subject matter and narrative form and downright good fun.

while i highly recommend seeing GITS (i have yet to see Innocence) the show was produced as a completely different story (hence the Stand Alone Complex sub-title), while using the same characters and general idea as the film it neither a follow on or a prequel to them
BTW what technology is losing you? apart from the invisibility suits and ability to jack into systems there isnt much in common technologically wise with the first film at least

Dammit. I made the mistake of watching the first episode of Full Metal Alchemist and now I can't stop. GITS will have to waste.
Warning to anyone who sees it though, prepare to have your heart snapped in half in episode 7. I almost died there.

Princess Mononoke, Akira, and Ghost in the Shell are the holy trinity of anime.
other than that Ninja Scroll is definitly worth recommending. Samurai Xis a series i haven't seen, but fans priase it highly. the fist of the north star series are alright. cowboy bebop is cool, battle star attila, ghost in the shell the series, perfect blue, spirited away, blood 1 and 2; these are all worth recommending. there are plenty others but just not clicking to mind right now.
