All right, all right... Tom Hanks is a good actor and a star - one out of a plethora. He is not in any way exceptional. - Deserving two consecutive Oscars? - I think not. There are many above him.
I saw Forrest Gump and Philadelphia and I didn't like any of them. The former was too sentimental and artificial, and the latter an all too politically contrived cliché of the most predictable kind. - Competent manufactures, no doubt, both of them - but that is very far from good enough.

I don't think Tom Hanks is overrated at all, but I do agree that he didn't deserve back to back Best Actor Oscars. I didn't really think either movie was that good, and I think there were more deserving people in 1993. However he was very good in Forrest Gump and IMO he definately deserved his award for that. Also he was amazing in Cast Away (maybe his best performance), Saving Private Ryan and Road to Perdition, all three of those are great movies. So to me Tom Hanks is a hell of an actor, and not to mention one of the best movie stars on the planet.

Good he is alright, and I think in Saving Private Ryan he was at his best. I havent seen Cast Away, but I will be glad to do it.

I thought Cast Away was actually pretty shitty... It was really nothing special at all (Same thing here with "The Terminal") and they get more acclaim then they should I think... Hell, there's hardly any dialogue through the better half of Cast Away... It got boring a bit I thought....

He is an OK actor, probably a bit overrated. I'd have to say his best work is in Saving Private Ryan.

I definitely don't think Tom Hanks is overrated.....he is an amazing versatile actor, with many great films under his belt. I love most of his movies.

Jerry McGuire is over rated. I know he is not in it but i always felt it was. Still good, but not as great as JoBlo thinks.

The thing about Hanks is he has that Jack Nicholson thing, he's so natural when he acts, he's just him being another character. And he's so damn likeable you forget he's not exactly Dustin Hoffman in the 60s, but he pulls it off just by being himself in someone else's shoes.
I think he is a bit overrated, and I didn't care much for The Terminal but I thought he was really good and the probably the best thing about it.
And God do I LOVE Joe Vs The Volcano, probably my favorite Tom Hanks movie next to Road To Perdition. He is so fuckin funny in that movie: "I can just feel...the lights, sucking the life out of me, suck SUCK SUCK SUCK.."
I'd rate his top 3 best:
1.Road to Perdition
2.Punchline
3.Big (which was supposed to originally star De Niro, if you can believe that.)
*Now you want to talk about overrated: JULIA ROBERTS. Oh my God. I mean she's good, but they talk about her like she's Jesus' kid or something.

Same here. He's one of my favs. And he most DEFINATELY deserved the oscars he won for Forrest Gump and Philadelphia! Two AMAZING performances! And he's been wonderful in Saving Private Ryan, Cast Away, Road to Perdition and The Terminal. And don't forget Big as well.

Tom Hanks is definitely a gifted actor. He will be remembered as one of the great ones. I haven't seen Philadelphia so I can't comment on it, but his performance in Forrest Gump was a great one, but I think the Oscar that year should've gone to Morgan Freeman. Cast Away, now that was the movie he should've won Best Actor for, and Russell Crowe should've won for A Beautiful Mind, not Den-Zel. You can't hate Tom Hanks' roles, and you can never say he's ever given a bad performance. He is an exceptional actor.

Who hates Tom Hanks? Indeed, he never made a bad performance, and personally I think he is even better in Philadelphia than in Forrest Gump where he was certainly good enough. - Maybe the title of the thread is a bit misleading after all, and it should for my part be taken as referring primarily to the films. - Hanks is great, but not unique, and IMO those two movies were rather bad ones.

Forrest Gump is greatly overrated. But it is still a pretty good movie in my opinion.
I give it a 7/10.

I hate Tom Hanks.
If I elaborate further, Sev will have me killed in a contract hit, so...I'll just let the original statement stand.
