Quite often, new thrillers are seen to be borrowing or ripping off the movie Se7en. Name some which you consider to fall into this category and tell which ones are good and bad. Here's mine...
GOOD:
Saw (2004)
BAD:
Taking Lives (2004)

Actually I like Taking Lives more than Saw. The twist at the end of Saw is kinda bogus.
There is this straight to video flick called Eye of the Killer (AKA After Alice) that I liked. It's kind of Seven-ish.
I love Suspect Zero and think it's one of the most underrated movies of the past 10 years or so.

Taking Lives was by far better than SAW... I liked SAW as well, don't get me wrong, but the hate towards Taking Lives is fucking baffling to me....

I have yet to see a good Se7en ripoff (or a good Pulp Fiction ripoff on that note).

Comparing Saw to Seven is a little like comparing Battlefield Earth to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Taking Lives is a lot better than SAW in many ways. And I liked SAW.

I saw a lot of similarities in Suicide Kings in Se7en (especially in the credits), not as good of course, but I still enjoyed it - and still bought it on DVD.

WOW!
Can someone explain to me how Taking Lives is better than Saw?

Well I haven't seen Saw, and I may never as much as Ebert and Roeper trashed it, but Taking Lives was a pretty good movie. I will watch Saw when it comes out on DVD if for no other reason than because I am curious. To me Seven and The Silence of the Lambs are the 2 great suspense thrillers in recent movie history.

I also thought Taking Lives was a pretty decent flick with some good, unpredictable twists. I also don't see how it's that derivative of Se7en. I haven't seen Saw yet but it looks good.

All serial killer thrillers are probably going to be compared to Se7en.

One kinda-sorta ripoff is called Ressurection, starring Christopher Lambert. The plot is:
A psychotic serial killer whose M.O. is unusual even by the standards of his deadly trade. Beginning shortly before Easter, he begins accumulating body parts for a bizarre, grisly religious ritual -- he intends to reassemble the body of Christ in time for his resurrection on Easter Sunday
It does sound cool though.

I hated, hated, hated that movie (to quote Ebert)

It's not just a sorta-ripoff, it's a straight-up, god's honest ripoff. They don't even try and hide it.
And yeah, it actually is pretty cool.
