SOME NOTABLE AND CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED FILMS in which gay characters and themes are central to the story, or have important supporting parts. Some of the earlier films contain characterizations that might be considered stereotypical or offensive today, but are important to gain an historical perspective on the changing perceptions toward gays. These films to a greater or lesser degree reflect our reality and help us see ourselves. Most of the films are in English, with some better known foreign-language films and TV movies represented.

Maybe the movies you mentioned had gay characters in them, but they weren't necessarily "about gays"

Love! Valour! Compassion! was well liked by a gay friend of mine. That seems to be a good measuring stick.

The best gay characters are the trio in PRISCILLA: QUEEN OF THE DESERT played by Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce.

The best lesbian/bisexual couples are the characters played by Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon in THE HUNGER, Naomi Watts and Laura Elena Harring in MULHOLLAND DRIVE, and Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon in BOUND.

Two really good movies of recent note are I Think I Do and All Over The Guy. Both are comedies with ensemble casts featuring gay characters as well as straights. (Watch the goodbye scene at the train station in I Think I Do and see if you don't feel all choked up.)

Excuse me, but Bob Fosse's Cabaret is not, and I repeat not "about gays". I'm sitting here thinking, "what is the logic in that choice?" Yeah it does feature gay characters, especially Joel Gray's character, but it is not centered on him. It is centered on Sally Bowles and her relationship with an Englishman. The cabaret is merely a backdrop for their romance together. No way....

Probably a little too light, but I enjoyed BILLY'S HOLLYWOOD SCREEN KISS, with Sean Hayes from "Will & Grace" as a gay photographer re-creating classic Hollywood scenes.

Lost and Delirious is a very well made film about two girls in love.

Chasing Amy is a great film with a great lesbian protagonist.

Fucking Åmål (aka Show Me Love) and Happy Together are both great films about gays. The former is a hilarious and heart-warming Swedish movie of two teenage girls who, gradually, fall for each other. The latter is a melancholy yet beautiful story about two Chinese guys trying to live together. It's set in Argentina and directed by the great Wong Kar-Wai.

Some of movies mentioned above (especially Bound) by movebum_20 and others, are also excellent, but I don't think such films as Four Weddings and a Funeral and Wonder Boys are actually "about gays".

A couple of years ago I saw a good and moving flick about gays on tv, but I can't remember its title. There was a gay man about to die of AIDS who had a kind of farewell party with his friends. Anybody know what this film is?

Movebum_20, "Boys don't cry" was not about homosexuals. It was about a woman who was a transsexual. It's really quite different.

Films about gay's. I thought "Cruising" was pretty accurate, from what I understand.

Move, I see. I think, Brandon's cousin was homosexual (and sympathetic to Brandon's plight) also, most people (the killers, in particular) misunderstood what and who Brandon was.

I'm guessing that's what you are driving at. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

Romero/Juliet...although SOME LIKE IT HOT is definitely gender-bending, I do not consider it a gay movie.

Zorro isn't gay, apparently his sword is. I can't say any movie I have seen that was about being gay, using it as a novelty was good, execpt Lesbian porno. I don't think that counts, but I wouldn't go see a movie only because it has gay characters. I'm straight and if I followed that sort of thing I actually would see Jason X and Clockstoppers.

There was a movie with Steve Buscemi that I believe was in the mid 1980's that I was tremendously moved by at the time. The title may have been Parting Glances. Anybody see it? Like it?

Of the movies listed above, I'd choose Dog Day Afternoon, but if As Good as it Gets (10/10) counts then I'd definitely go with that one. And Greg Kinnear's performance in that movie is my favorite performance of a homosexual character...
