View Full Version : You're going to have to give Tom Hanks that third oscar. Get the fuck over it.

Seriously, folks. Tom Hanks deserved the oscar for Cast Away. But of course, he's not going to get the oscar for Cast Away, because that'd mean he'd have 3 oscars, and you can't have that too young or some other absurd nonsense, I guess. I will bet you $10 that if Hanks makes another movie in which he deserves the Best Actor oscar, they won't give that shit to him because he already has 2. Hollywood politics: teh suck.

Hollywood politics do suck. Thats the reason he won for Forrest Gump.

Do you think he should get it for The Terminal or something?

Agreed, the politics do suck. But the silver linings are that:
A) Hanks is still young enough to pull an undeniable ace out of his sleeve and
B) Spielberg LOVES him and come on, when these two work together they're a force to be reckoned with. Eventually they'll hit the jackpot and get Hanks that #3 he deserves.
I have faith that it'll happen!

Tom Hanks is probably my favorite actor alive today, that said i dont think his Gump win was fully deserved.
He will get a third one day, but not this year.

Hanks gets slighted way too much for his Forrest Gump performance. It was a great performance IMO.
I've heard this mentioned before which has always puzzled me. If you want to talk about people winning undeserving Oscars, how about Russell Crowe in Gladiator? Or this year, when Jamie Foxx wins for Ray. Please, Ray was one of the most boring movies of the year. I guess I couldn't notice Foxx's perfomance over all the sounds of people snoring around me.

Those statements just aren't true. Russell Crowe deserved his Oscar for Gladiator without question. It was, quite simply, the best performance of the year and that's why the academy gave him the award.
As for Jamie Foxx and Ray. When I watched that movie I literally thought I was watching Ray Charles onscreen. Jamie Foxx walked, talked, sang, and imitated his mannerisms without fault. It was jawdropping. The movie was a bit disappointing, but his performance kept me entertained throughout the flick. It will be a crying shame if he doesn't win the Oscar.

That was Russell Crowe's least deserving oscar NOMINATION, let alone win.
Tom Hanks was superb in Cast Away. I mean c'mon. He made audiences cry over THE LOSS OF A VOLLEYBALL. THE LOSS OF A FUCKING VOLLEYBALL. That, gentlemen, is ACTING.
Was there anything to Gladiator? I'm not going to say it's a BAD PERFORMANCE, because it isn't. But it's hardly a complicated character and there's hardly any complicated scenes acting-wise.
Crowe was way, way, way better in both The Insider and A Beautiful Mind. In fact, not winning over A Beautiful Mind was absurd in itself. The fucking movie IS John Nash and you award everyone except the guy who played John Nash? For fuck's sake.

My thoughts exactly. Their was absolutely nothing impressive about Crowe's performance in Gladiator.

I appreciated Russell Crowe's performance a lot more than Hanks,' obviously the academy felt the same way. I found the grief carried by Maximus wonderfully played by Crowe. He was a man possessed to getting his vengeance without once going overthetop and overacting scenes.

Castaway I felt was one of Hanks' more lacklustre performances... Yea, he made people cry over a fuckin volleyball, he was cryin over it, etc. but come on... Really, I mean the whole fuckin middle of the movie contains no dialogue, and him acting like a fuckin caveman for christ's sake... I honestly think people way over-rate the flick and his performance, and it baffles me as to why... Ah well, whatever, nevermind. :p

Oh boo fucking hoo. The guy already got 2 Oscars, one for a shit film I might add. Having 2 Oscars(and back to back)is rare enough as it is, it won't kill you if he doesn't get a 3rd.
I hate FORREST GUMP. It was a fucking stupid movie about a semi-lucky retard with all the right friends who was in the right place all the time and not much else. The more I see it, the more I fucking hate it. That Hanks won an Oscar for this performance is bewildering enough. That it kept pulling away with trophy after trophy only proves my theory about how stupid the academy really can be on occasion.
I also agree that Crowe not getting another nod for best actor for A BEAUTIFUL MIND was a huge brainfart.
I also agree that Jamie Foxx is not only Oscar bound, but I believe he deserves it hands down.
If you want to give the Oscar to Tom Hanks for anything, it should have been for ROAD TO PERDITION. If not that, then at least APOLLO 13 or SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. All three of these are better than FORREST GUMP.

I liked Cast Away alot. Hanks did a very good job, but who cares if he didn't win the Oscar? There have been plenty of actors robbed of Oscars IMO. That's just what happens sometimes. Come on, they gave the Oscar to Robert Redford in "Ordinary People" over De Niro's best performane in "Raging Bull". Sometimes the academy just doesn't make the right choice. Instead they go for the more popular choice of the bunch. For instance, Gladiator. I liked the movie, thought Russel Crowe did a good job but I don't think it's his best performance out there.
Anyway, enough of my ranting. I like Hanks but I find that he can very inconsistent in these times. He went from Cast Away to crap like The Terminal, Polar Express and Lady Killers.... kind of a step down if you ask me.

And rightfully so, as Ordinary People is a much better movie.
Neither of his winning performances are his best. Big and Saving Private Ryan (havent seen Castaway) were much better than his winning ones.
Philadelphia is just a crap movie, but atleast he was good in Gump. Meh.

But that was partially the original point of the rant. You're supposed to give Oscars to deserving people. No one here has argued Philadelphia, and while some argue Forrest Gump, theirs a lot of people out there who like the movie and the performance.
The point is their shouldn't be a limit on the number of Oscars one should receive in a lifetime. That'd be like telling the Patriots that since they've won 3 Super Bowls, they're no longer eligible to win another.
Hanks should already have three. Apollo 13, Road to Perdition, Castaway, Saving Private Ryan...take your pick.

What the fuck? Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese are not the same person.
ROBERT REDFORD did not win an Oscar for acting but for directing Ordinary People, and he won over the Great Scorsese. DeNiro got his Oscar rightfully for a truly great performence.
I really don't understand all the hate towards Forrest Gump. It was and still is simply A GREAT FILM in every aspect. But what upsets people is that it won over The Shawshank Redemption & Pulp Fiction, both Great Films in my book as well but that doesn't make Forrest any less impressive. Plus is the Oscar kind of movie. If it were up to me, Quiz Show should've won, not that it is better but the best Oscar film.

If it were up to me, Forrest Gump would still win, and anyone who thought ontherwise would be lined up and shot.

I don't have to do anything but pay taxes and die, much less give Tom Hanks anything. :D
I don't think Tom Hanks will ever win a third Best Actor Oscar. No actor has ever won three Best Acting Oscars (though, a few have Supporting Actor wins). Since that precedent has been established, it won't happen.

Hey, there's gotta be a first time for anything.
And I'm confident Hanks can do it. I personally think both his first Oscars were deserved, and there's still some time ahead of him for him to get a third one. It'd take a nice turn from what he's used to, maybe even sharper than a ROAD TO PERDITION, but why not? He's a curious actor, he takes chances, he's worked with a fair share of the Best, and if he keeps working with great directors (and keeps that collaboration with Spielberg going), I say he can get a third one.

Agreed, completely. I love that film.
Hanks has @ 3 too many Oscars as it is. Another one would just add a little insult to the injury.

Hanks is a great actor. His win for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump were both well deserved. He was excellent in Saving Private Ryan, and maybe should've gotten an Oscar for that...
HOWEVER...I saw Castaway, a few times, and I found this very long and very boring. If it was shorter, I would've enjoyed it more. This is probably the one film I don't think he should've won the Oscar for.
He'll get his third one eventually, and I'm glad it wasn't for Castaway.

I would agree, something about a lead character mooning the president of the united states is awesome.
