Hmmm....not one mention of Thora Birch's amazing performance....? Or Wes Bentley? To me, those two carried this flick, gave it soul and depth, and served as the emotional epicenter of the whole production.
In my opinion, any mention of "AB" must include Jane and Ricky.
Don't misconstrue...I enjoyed everything you mentioned...I just fail to see how those two (especially Thora) miss the "Top Ten" cut...

...well, I was going to use DD, but nevermind. I'll go with Fellowship of the Ring.

10. The amazing opening. The history of the Ring, the gigantic battle, Gollum, and Cate Blanchett's narration.

9. Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Elija Wood, Sean Astine, Dominic Mohaganan, Billy Boyd, Orlando Bloom, Liv Tyler, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Sean Bean, John Rhys-Davies, Cate Blanchett, ect., ect.,...

8. The amazing locations, and sets. Attention to detail here, is very important in showing the history of the specific culture, and race - and they did an amazing job showing this. More detail than anyone will ever see on the screen was put into the sets, and it shows.

7. Excellent action sequences. I think the Mines of Moria is one of the best action set pieces ever. And the battle of the Last Alliance, and Amon Hen were great, as well.

6. The death of Gandalf. Very well-acted. Very exciting. And very emotional. The acting, music, and the scenes outside of the mines, make this a favorite moment in the film.

5. The excellent representation of evil. The Ring-wraiths, Orcs, Uruk-Hai, the Watcher in the Water, the Cave Troll, the Balrog, Sauron, Saruman, ect. And lets not forget evils strongholds - Bara-Dur, and Orthanc.

4. The beautiful cinematography, showcasing the amazing locations of Middle-Earth. The vastness, its beauty, its grandeur.

3. The scene with the Argonath. You know, those two giant statues, that are the entrance into the realm of Gondor. It truly was one of my favorite moments from a film. Epic, beautiful, the music was great, and it was an all-around awesome scene.

2. The death of Boromir. One of the best deaths in film. Very emotional, and very resonant of many of the films themes. The subsequent speech with Aragorn is also amazing.

1. The evident love for what they are doing. Everyone involved wanted to be, and it is evident. They loved what they were doing, and they would rather not be doing anything else, and that shows on film.

4. the soundtrack is great with The Kinks, The Who, John Lennon, and Cat Stevens
5. Olivia Williams (i think that's her name. my memory seems to be slipping) is beautiful in her own way.
6. THEY REPRODUCED SERPICO!

Yi-Yi AKA A One and A Two

1. It's the the most sincere and externally beautiful film I've ever seen.

2. It has the most sincere and real performances I've ever seen.

3. Mr. Ota

4. Ting-Ting is most well written and might I say cute, young, female character I've seen in years.

5. The scenes with Yang-Yang are very fun and bring back memories.

6. Min-Min's monologe about telling her Mom (who is in a coma) how her day is, even though she is tortured by how it's the same every day. So sad....

7. It felt like a visual novel, with it's little details and the unspoken observations of the characters.

8. This is the best example of a film that shows how beautiful life can be and makes you want to live it.

9. It's a strong reminder of why I love film.

10. I loved the setting

Mulholland Drive

1. "Camilla, you came back!" That line reading, along with the heartbreaking reaction shot of Naomi Watts going from bliss to fear to an utterly shaking wreck is an indelible image in a scene filled with many of them.

2. Club Silencio. Roy Orbison's "Crying" sung in Spanish never sounded so beautiful...it reached out to me, as an audience member.

3. Camilla leading Diane up the stairs to the party. For once, you think, Diane is happy...that is, until it all comes crashing down.

4. The entire dream/reality subtext of the film gives it a staggering depth. What seems goofy, comical or just plain weird in the early stages gives way to a deeper understanding.

5. "Don't drink all the Coke!" I don't know why, but that line is the most quotable (and hilarious) in the film.

6. The audition sequence. Betty, at first sight, seems to be a mediocre actress; once she hits it off with the older actor, she sizzles and becomes an entirely different person.

7. Regarding the above, credit must go to Naomi Watts, who is chamelonlike and was simply robbed of an Oscar nom for her great performance.

8. When Diane asks the hitman what the mysterious blue key opens, he just laughs, and Lynch does a slow dissolve on her face. Beautiful. I don't know why, but that shot is beautiful.

9. The winding, endless shot of the limo driving up the titular road, highlighted by Angelo Badalamenti's haunting score.

10. Finally, a lesbian love scene that isn't so much about eroticism or animal lust as it is about unrequited love from one person to another, albeit all exisiting in the grip of Diane's fractured mental state.

Ashes of Time

1. Maggie Cheung's 8 minutes torwards the end. The most sad stuff I've ever seen in a film.

2. Leslie Cheung's performance

3. Bridgitte Lin's performance. She actually made us believe she was two people, when she was really just a schkitso.

4. Wong Kar-wai's directing style, how he cut the scenes together, the blurriness in the fight scenes. He's one of my favorites. And how he put the film together in the editing room is pure genius.

5. It's literally like visual poetry.

6. Though the characters were all alienating. That's what made them sad. You felt for them, sometimes sympathetic, sometimes empathetic, their lonliness and their needing to be loved. They are ashes of time...

7. Chris Doyle's camera work.

8. The haunting score that really fit the film.

9. Hong Qi (Jacky Cheung), I feel is a great character and hero at that.

10. The film is an emotional experience for me. Some scenes are so powerful, that they are shocking, and it makes the blood in my head rush. No other film has done that to me.

1. Wong Kar-wai's directing

2. Michelle Reis's heartbreaking performance. Most guys who see this movie go ga-ga over her masturbation scene, but it was more deep than most comprehended

3. Takeshi Kaneshiro's performance, he had no dialouge, but his performance was brilliant in so many ways

4. The fact that all these characters are lowlifes, the film appears to be cold, yet you have both sympathy and empathy for these characters and in the center, the film is very warm.

5. The beautiful ending

6. The score and wacky music choice.

7. Chris Doyle's camera work.

8. The films fun sense of humor

9. The scene where He Quiwu (Takeshi Kaneshiro) and his dad are playing around with the video camera

10. It's depiction of lonliness, that WKW does so well.

10 reasons I love GONE WITH THE WIND

1. Vivien Leigh's incredible performance, the best I've ever seen.
2. The character of Scarlett O'Hara - selfish, spoiled, jealous, petty, but also full of life, strongminded, determined, optimistic - one of the most complex characters ever created and an inspiration to me personally.
3. Olivia de Havilland's Melanie - a beautiful, sensitive performance from a brilliant actress, that makes this "too good to be true" character come to life
4. Clark Gable's suave antihero and the witty banter between him and Vivien Leigh.
5. Brilliant screenplay, that stays close to the book, but makes just enough changes to actually improve on it. The many, many memorable scenes and lines.
6. Its ability to entertain through its entire gargantuan runtime of 224 minutes and the great emotional impact it has no matter how many times I watch it.
7. The nostalgia it makes me feel for a time and a place I've never even known
8. The technical aspects which couldn't be improved on even today and Max Steiner's powerful score.
9. The ending that perfectly sums up the movie and is one of the most memorable scenes ever.
10. The fact that it is larger than life, melodramatic and, at times, a soap opera of epic proportions - I wouldn't have it any other way.

Ten Reasons I Love OLDBOY

1) The general premise and idea: "seek vengenace, or seek the truth?"
2) The mind-blowing 3+ minute hammer fighting corridoor tracking shot.
3) The fact that after hating it and citing it the "most dissapointing film I'd ever seen" the first time, the 2nd time was a revelation. It propelled full force into my favorite films of all time.
4) The clever, "no uneeded humor here", and intelligent screenplay.
5) The quote: "Remember be it a rock or a grain of sand, in water they sink as the same." An act of evil, or wrong against someone is still bad no matter how small or large it may be.
6) The fact that it made me feel like it had taken a completely different approach on the revnege film though it has all the common elements of a revenge flick.
7) Incredible, believeable performances by Min-sik Choi, Ji-tae Yu, and Hye-jeong Kang as Oh Dae-su, Lee Wook Jin, and Mido respectively.
8) "Very lonely people that I met... they all hallucinated ants at one time." What an interesting quote, and strangely a scene that I'd usually see as "weird" and "stupid" becomes one that always entrances me in deep thought.
9) Oh Dae-su's devestating revelation, and the ending itself.
10) The final shot...haunting.

Ten reasons why I love Eyes Wide Shut:

1. Nicole Kidman takes most of it off and shows us her stunning assets
2. Deals with the darker side of marriage that most other directors shy away from
3. Film is about Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman experiencing a marital breakdown. In this case life imitated art a few years later.
4. Beautiful naked women in most of the scenes
5. Makes me wonder if and where these elitist underground orgy parties are happening.
6. Georgous cinemtography from beginning to end
7. Tom Cruise goes to see a prostitute
8. Risque subject matter that starts out tame and gets progressively weirder
9. Kubrick's swan song
10. Kubrick can do no wrong

Some Like it Hot
-Consistently funny from beginning to end, no movie has ever made me laugh so hard (well, except for maybe 'Bringing Up Baby'), and it really takes a lot to make me laugh.
-Marilyn Monroe. The role is not really a stretch for her acting abilities, but it does feature her at her finest hour. Just her presence alone in this film will convince you of her legendary movie star status, and Tony Curtis fell for her.
-Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, what a pairing! And it's even more delightful seeing them in drag! Perfect timing, perfect delivery, they were just flawless.
-Tony Curtis' impeccable impersonation of a Cary Grant type role with 'Junior'.
-In what is probably the film's funniest moment, a still dazed Osgood's (Joe E. Brown) response to a cross dressing Jack Lemmon revealing himself as a man: "Well, nobody's perfect!"
-Speaking of which, Joe E. Brown is nothing short of superb and is responsible for a lot of scene stealing that went on in the movie.
-All of Sugar's (Marilyn Monroe) songs are magical, especially the touching, beautiful moment of her singing "I'm through with love", prompting Joe/Josephine (Tony Curtis), who is still in love with her, to kiss her and reveal who he is.
-The smart, spirited, fast paced, and absolutely delightful dialogue. One of the key things to making this film a successful comedy.
-A hilarious George Raft in a memorable supporting role as the antagonist of the film.
-The situations are unexpected and always catches me off guard. Just when I think the film is going to go one way, it goes the other. And yet, at the end, it all comes together perfectly.

Rushmore
-It could always bring out the optimism in me even when I'm down in a way that most films are not capable of, and I'm mostly a pessimistic person to begin with,
-Bill Murray. Need I say more? The man has given so many wonderful performances but this one remains to be his greatest achievement. One of the finest examples of subtle acting.
-Every image is so perfectly framed, with much credit to Wes Anderson's superb direction.
-Jason Schwartzman. Despite the fact that his films after this one have all been pretty much crap, he will always go down as a cool guy in my book for his characterization of Max Fischer.
-There is always something I can to relate to in Max and Herman J. Blume through all the disappointments and unsatisfactions they have with their lives.
-Unforgettable scenes. Special mentioning goes out to the plays and all the montages (especially "Here comes my baby", my favorite scene in the entire movie. Max is finally settling down and it's nice to see his life going smoothly..............until the affair between Herman and Miss Cross begins. The music and mood captures his state so perfectly that I always find myself praying that the small moments of success he has found will never end.)
-Olivia Williams' intelligent, heartfelt performance as Miss Cross.
-The outstanding supporting cast. Brian Cox, Mason Gamble, Seymour Cassel, Sara Tanaka, Stephen McCole and Luke Wilson are all pitch perfect in their respective roles.
-The impeccable pitting of 60's-70's rock music against certain scenes (most notably the use of Cat Stevens' "The Wind" in the 'kite flying society' scene and "Ooh-la-la" by the film's conclusion), contributing to conveying such rich, longlasting emotions.
-The appropriate use of tragedy and human drama alongside the deadpan, quriky humor to create an indelible cast of characters, in the process immersing them into basic every day life themes that one could relate to, thus making the film accessible.

. . . Unforgiven:
-The underlying theme of redemption
-the stylistic violence portrayed in the film
-the discussions on gunfighting
-the symbolic characters: the gunfighter-wannabe kid, the writer/author of dime-novels (which idolize and exaggerate real stories), the aging gunfighter, the brutal (but honest) sheriff
-the great portrayals of said characters, including the Oscar winning turn by Gene Hackman. Cast includes Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, and Richard Harris
-the underexaggerations of William Munny's past
-it's a Western
-the excellent production value: Eastwood's Oscar winning direction, Joel Cox's Oscar winning editing, and Jack Green's beautiful cinematography
-great lines like "He shoulda armed himself, if he's going to decorate his saloon with my friend," "Deserve's got nothing to do with," "We all have it coming, kid," and the best: "Helluva thing killing a man; take away all he's got, and all he's ever gonna have."
-the finale when William Munny shows his badass side

Ten Reasons I love Last Action Hero

1 - Explaining why all phone numbers begin with 555: "That's why we have area codes..."

2 - Arnold in arguably his best role/performance.

3 - Hilarious lampooning of action movie cliches - cars explode in massive fireballs with just a few shots.

4 - Awesome villain performed by Charles Dance.

5 - The preposterous rooftop funeral for Leo the Fart - who has a nerve gas bomb inside him which is armed by pulling his finger.

6 - The Hamlet trailer: "To be, or not to be? ... Not to be."

7 - The genuinely touching story about a boy without a father figure and finds one in Jack Slater - all brought on because of the boy's love of movies.

8 - The love of movie theaters expressed in the movie.

9 - The knockout cast with major actors in every role giving wonderful performances, particularly Mercedes Ruehl.

10 - Arnold driving into the sunset, waving goodbye to Danny.
