Plot:
The small village of Ong-Bak worships the god with the same name. After a drug dealer from Bangkok steals the head to sell it, they send out their "alpha male" in the town(the determine the top male by a competition seen at the opening)to go to Bangkok to get it. He teams up with a con man and his friend to go get the head.
I saw the Thai version of Ong-Bak and loved it(8/10). It was a fun action movie with some great fight scenes. Luckily, in Canada the release is getting a major push so I'll definitely be going to see it and dragging my friends along(they'll complain because the movie is Thai and they're a bunch stupid fuckers, but they'll love it) Either way I think that despite the plot holes and that 1 annoying character(you'll see when you watch it)you'll forgive it because all it wants to do is wow you and entertain you with fight scenes. You'll just have to wait for the action though because the first 35 minutes is introducing the plot and characters, but that follows up with over 90 minutes of pure action.

The movie is kind of dull until the action starts, then it's just amazing. It's a very good action film. Everyone--see it.

Yeah, too bad they had to spend the first half hour trying to set up some kind of storyline!
But it IS a good movie!
I give it a 7/10 (http://www.angelfire.com/film/kcmsterpce0/reviews/ongbak.html).

HUH?
You are giving it a lower score because it had awesome action? What did you want, Steven Seagal to make a cameo or something?

Review: Ong-Bak; Muay Thai Warrior
http://www.browntownjohnny.com/index.php
Jet Li....needs strings and wires!
Jackie Chan....makes funny faces and is getting too old.
Jeff Speakman...what the fuck happened to him?
Jean Claude Van Damme....Has a funny face and getting old (he wants to act).
Chuck Norris.....old and uses stunt men.
Bruce Lee......Dead!
Who is next? Step up and be our new martial arts hero! Who will step up and kick ass? (drum roll) Panom Yeerum!!!!! (Change the name quick).....I mean....Tony Jaa!!!!! WOW! It's Clobberin Time in Bangkok. Thai Boxing and Buddhist mayhem in "Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior", the best marital arts movie in some while. Where Jackie Chan is a legend for his bold stunt work (indeed great a few years ago) and Jet Li is a fantastic screen star, Tony Jaa is a pure 'bone crunching' top kicking machine. He also is a fantastic movie star, and wants you all to know that he is fast and nimble by giving the audience respect for his martial art. Jaa gives Chan a nod in "Ong-Bak" by showing that he also loves to do his stunts with danger in mind.
The story is so familiar... a young farm boy Ting (Tony Jaa) is chosen to go to the big city to retrieve a stolen Buddha Head, a symbol of the village's prosperity. He must find the head with the help of his cousin 'Dirty Balls' (who left years ago and is now a hustler). Next thing you know, Ting has to enter the world of underground fighting and the gangsters that run it are ruthless. So are his opponents. Director Prachya Pinkaew brings us to Bangkok, a city much like the Brazil movie classic "City Of God". The action is pretty damn good, foot chases and motor carts. But the real action is the head-kicking fight choreography that will have you wondering "can humans do that without wires?". Yes and it is very impressive. I can't recommend this movie enough, even though it is very familiar and relies on repeat 'slow-mo' action replay too much. The opening sequence explains where Tony Jaa is going...to the top of the heap!
The main villain smokes through his blowhole in his neck....Browntown loves Cancer Kazoo villains.

I actually saw the originl Thai version with Chinese and Engliush subtitles. And I echo most of the above statments! Apparently some things were changed for the worse between the original and trhe newly release US version.

What are you talking about? There were changes to the American release(?), because this is the first I heard of it. It's not a very graphic movie at all. Almost a PG-13 in fact, if not for a few moments of meanness.
And bad language.

6 / 10
slight spoilers:
when i saw this in a new york theatre, everyone was cracking up throughout. its ridiculously hilarious that they'd replay ong-bak sliding under two consecutive cars 3 times each (total of 6 replays in under 15 seconds). that , and the zappy voice guy was flat out hilarious. and whats up with the terrible acting and the little taxi car chase?
i love it just because it was sooo bad, and everytime ong-bak knocked someone out, this guy behind me would be saying "ooooo shit" with the same enthusiasm every time. gotta <3 it

Nothng to worry. All that was changed was the score by Besson, who replaced it with music that would follow to the fast-paced fights.
And about Ong-Bak being PG-13, the whole drug storyline along with the pretty graphic broken arm and leg would make it a very light R(although it got the PG-13 rating here in Canada).
Kung-Fu Hustle is another example of a pretty light movie having very cruel parts(family possibly being burned to death, chopped off foot, people getting shot, punched head that actually spins a 180). It was understandable though, but that will be for when I put up my review of Kung-Fu Hustle.

Haven't seen the American release. But the American rating for it is R, and it makes sense. Like I said, there's bad language and the violence is just strong enough to warrant an R here in America. Plus, the drug overdose scene was pretty harsh.

This movie was nuts. The fighting and the stunts are amazing. Go see it for that and forget that there is a poor excuse for a plot.

Really awesome fight scenes and stunts, but everything else was lacking. For instance . . . .
SPOILERS!!!!************************************** *****
The end scene when the throat cancer guy was getting crushed by the Buddha head was really cheesy and just awful to see.
END SPOILERS************************************
And then there was annoying girl and chubby loser guy and needle guy, the instant replays, etc. They all were built around the action.
But yes, Tony Jaa does kick total ass
6/10.

Wow, Tony Jaa is the man! I couldn't believe some of the stunts he could pull, all so perfectly timed and with such precision. Makes you wonder how many takes it took to do some of the scenes....
The action is relentless after the build up of the characters, and unlike some people who thought the storyline was not all that good, i kind of enjoyed it. I felt for Tony Jaa's cause of getting the Buddha head back and was genuinely willing him to win, which of course he does with STYLE!
Another aspect of his fighing style which i enjoyed apart from the clear ability to really kick anyone's ass, was the sheer speed of his movements, some of his attacks were like lighting, almost a blur.........and so the action replay feature was i feel a welcome benefit letting me gape in awe at just what he can do!
Definately reccomend the watch, full on action with great style and choreography. Plotline although not great is more than bareable, just a genuine thrill ride through underground Thai society.
9/10 >>> Just because i was that impressed by the action!
