View Full Version : The first time you felt the Thrill
James Logan

You're sitting and watching a movie. Your whole being is into it. And then something happens on the screen, and you feel it. The Thrill -- that chill up and down your spine, your brain going "Dude!", the hair on your arms rising straight, and a big smile cracks your face.
We're movie fans, we all know the feeling. My question is: when was the first time you remember feeling it? Watching what movie and at which moment?
Of course I'll go first -- the first time, or at least the oldest I remember, would be watching RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK for the first time. The Nazis have just been searching Katanga's boat, and you get that historic moment between Katanga and his first mate...
"Look again."
(beat) "I found him."
"Where?"
"There!"
And cue the booming Raiders Theme. That's the first time I felt it, and I've been in love with movies ever since.
Now it's your turn to share....if you got what I'm talking about. If not, make stuff up. Either way -- don't forget to include SPOILER WARNINGS.

From what I remember, it was watching the bike sore up into the sky in E.T. Elliot's scream of delight in that scene perfectly reflects the same emotion I was feeling during that moment, I was about 8 back then.

Jurrasic Park, when it showed the first dinosaurs grazing in the feilds.
It wasnt an action scene, it wasnt horror, and it wasnt a teary eyed moment, it was just a scene of awe for me.
The music was perfect, the expressions on the actors faces were perfect, the score was perfect, everything about the damn scene was perfect....and it was just the beginning of one of the greatest "adventure" movies ive ever seen.
Heh, i just realized that the 3 movies listed so far are from Spielberg.

I can't say that I cracked a big smile, but I definetely got the chill up my spine and was awe-struck. The scene...
Star Wars - Return Of The Jedi
Vader: You cannot hide forever Luke.
Luke (offscreen): I will not fight you.
Vader: Give yourself to the Dark Side. It is the only way you can save your friends. Yes...your thoughts betray you. Your feelings for them are strong. Especially for...your sister! So, you have a twin sister. Your feelings have now betrayed her too. Obi-Wan was wise to hide her from me. Now his failure is complete. If you will not turn to the Dark Side, then perhaps she will!
Luke screams and ignites his Lightsaber and charges at Vader.
I fucking love this scene. The first time I saw it when I was so little was awesome. I still get the thrill. The music, the way the camera follows the two duelling, the flashing of the green and red lightsabers. And most importantly the fact that these two people are Father and Son, but one is so completely evil and the other so good. It is just fucking spectacular!

Spoilers For The Movies in Bold
Shawshank Redemption when the warden pulls the poster off the wall.
Field of Dreams when his father takes of the catchers mask and they play catch.
Those are the two earlier ones I remember. The most recent one was the ending to SAW . For some reason that movie just had me smiling, and feeling great at the end.

The end of the movie Gladiator. At that moment, I decided that filmmaking is something I should seriously consider as a career for the rest of my life.

The music in that scene fucking owns, i agree. I think its the best music in all the movies.

I know this sounds pretty fucking ridiculous, but I think my first thrill happened in A Goofy Movie. At the end, when Max goes on the stage of the rock show and sings the song. I just wanted to be rock star and look like him on that stage. I was only 8 or 9, I think. That story is pathetic.

I was eight years old when I saw Back to the Future. I was on the edge of my seat for the whole movie. There are many memorable scenes in that movie: The scene where the Lybians chanse Marty to 1955, or when Marty meets his mother, or when Marty stands up to a two-generation bully in Biff, or when Biff, with his Oldsmobile, chases Marty on a skateboard around the city square and biff finally crashes into a manure truck, or when George McFly finally stands up to Biff by laying him out and wins the heart of his sweetheart, or when Marty gets to go on stage and plays Johnny B. Good, but the best part is the whole sequence with the clock tower and the disconnected cable and the car that won't start and the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity for the fluxcapacitor! It is fucking awsome, even now! Where's my dvd? I'm watching it again!

I dunno. I've loved movies for a long time.
I think the Wizard of Oz, actually was when I felt that chill. The first time I saw it, The witch that morpger from riding a bike to a broom scared me and I hid my face. When everything got quiet I looked up and watched her walk to the door and open it. In that First glimpse of Oz I fell in love with movies. I watched everthing I could and threw fits when I couldn't, after that. I was like six
I was 11 when American Beauty Came out and I wanted to watch it, my mom wouldn't let me, so I freaked out, and convinced a friend to rent it at a sleepover. He hated it and fell asleep. I watched with my mouth hanging open. If felt the shiver again with the "bag scene.
Those two stick out for me, although I get it alot. The movies you've all said gave me the same chill. JP in particular.
I knew I wanted to make movies and write movies when I finished watching Clerks, Christmas day in 2003. I have'nt stopped writing since.

If I absolutely had to pinpoint, I'd go with 3 times in my life, various ages:
Phase 1: (Age 5 or so)
-The nazi's melting at the end of "Raiders" (I used to make everyone in the house watch it when it came on, I think I was 4)
-Ghostbusters, esp when the go into the hotel and trap slimer
-R2 shooting Luke's lightsabre on Jabba's barge and him catching the fucker and swinging it like an angry drunk at his wife.
-the opening shot and then the whole movie of Mad Max Beyond T Dome
Phase 2: (Age 13 or so, 7th grade)
-Hoffa, the showdown with Bobby Kennedy at the senate hearing. I never realized how great dialogue and acting could be.
Phase 3: (Age 19, right off the deep end...)
-DeNiro dragging Ginger through the house and throwing her ass out. And then Nicky getting baseball-batted at the end, that was it for me. Movie dork for life. It was all down hill from there.

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Batman 1989 : The ending, with Batman overlooking the city. With the bat signal looking beautiful against the night sky. The music really captivated me, and left me wanting more.
Ghostbusters : Again, it was the ending. The New York crowd cheering on the Ghostbusters for a job well done. Just a great movie. And who doesnt love the "Ghostbusters" song?
Pulp Fiction : Mainly the dance sequence between Uma Thurman, and John Travolta. The soundtrack was awesome. Great movie, with equally great music.
Jurassic Park : The scene where the T Rex opens a can of whoop ass on the raptors. Proving he was "The King". The score at the end of the movie still sends chills up and down my spine.
E.T. : Same as Hannibal21's.
Back to the Future : The prom scene with Fox playing guitar. I remember getting much chills when Fox recovered from apparently disappearing while "Earth Angel" played on. Perfect song for that scene. Love that movie.
T2 : Where Arnold decides to self terminate. Especially the part where just before Arnold disappears, he gives John and Sarah a thumbs up. Sounds cheesy when you type it out, but it really works in the movie.
END OF SPOILERS!!!!!
There's probably other movies, but thats all I can think of right now.

THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY-Tuco running through the cementary looking for the grave. I was 12 years old when I first saw that scene.

Probably The Wizard of Oz. I was absolutely obsessed with it, I know that I have seen it more than any other film, by far. I don't know if it is one moment so much as it is many, wonderful moments in a truely magical film.
8 years old, watching Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade. I think it was the tank chase that really got me. Indy fighting the Nazi officer on the tank tracks. Still my favourite of those films.

I know it sounds kind of dumb, but for me it was probably Revenge of the Nerds (1984)
At that time I had a real fascination with University life. It is also one of the best underdog movies IMO. To this day if Revenge of the Nerds is on TV, I feel obligated to watch it.
Plus It is one of the very first times that I got to see boobies on screen.

Jaws. I used to watch it all of the time when I was younger, and it still gets to me. Whole lot of thrills in this one. Just thrills one after the other. It's still one of my favorite movies.

Same here, only this happened to me a year or two ago when I finally got around to seeing it. It's never too late to get knocked on your ass by the brilliance that is The Usual Suspects.

It was while watching The Empire Strikes Back during it's initial run at the theaters at age five and seeing Darth Vader's first appearance on the screen. It opened with a long-distance shot of the miles long Super Star Destroyer, the flagship of the Imperial fleet surrounded by an armada of ships. Then it cut to Darth Vader staring out into space from the main bridge with that respirator breathing noise. All the while John William's wonderful score (The Imperial March) was playing in the background.
I've been hooked on movies ever since! ;)

Let's see shall we? What 'wowed' the No Life Queen...
'Jurassic Park'. Enter Brachiosaurus, stage left and the living Hell demon noises hiding under the greenery in the raptor pen as the steer is lowered in.
'Aliens'. "Get away from her, you BITCH!"
"Hellsing: Order 13: Hellfire" A battle of epic proportions between evil and... well... EVIL.
'The Terminator' The slo-mo in Tech Noir between the protagonists and that trigger-happy cyborg complete with "Burnin' in the Third Degree" playing disjointedly in the background.
'T2': When the T-1000 rises from the black and white tiled floor behind the cop in the sanitarium.
Basically all of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark"
'The Abyss': When Ed Harris has basically given up on living, he sees an Angel who shows him there is more to live for still.

Spoilers Below:
The scene in Se7en where a bloody John Doe reveals himself in the police station, and the confrontation between him, Mills, and Somerset in the desert.
Hannibal attacking the guards and escaping in Silence of the Lambs.
"Luke---I AM YOUR FATHER!" in The Empire Strikes Back
The lightsaber battle between Qui Gon, Obi-Wan, and Darth Maul in TPM as Duel of the Fates plays.
Mary Hobbes' final tape playing in Session 9. "Simon's" voice gave me the creeps.
Everyone screaming and running for the shore in Jaws.
Ghostbusters: Slimer, Staypuff, and the scene where Zuul and The Gatekeeper wreak havoc before returning to the apartment complex.
And, almost everything in The Neverending Story.

Definitely my first viewing of Jurassic Park. I was always a dinosaur nut as a kid, and to see the first brachiosaur (sp?) on the big screen was the best moment I've ever had watching a movie.
