View Full Version : Why does Eric Bana keep getting work in Hollywood?

Because i watched Hulk a little while ago, i figured i'd see his imdb movie listing, and much to my surprise, there are two upcoming movies with him, one directed by none other than Curtis Hanson, and the other by Steven Spielberg. I mean geez! This guy can't act worth shit judging by Black Hawk Down and Hulk and he was the worse thing about Troy, so - WHY my god WHY - do talented people keep hiring him?!? Seriously, are people in Hollywood really that blind? God, he's worse than Orlando Bloom in the acting department, and i still see his name mentioned alongside so many talented actors and directors. People have truly gone nuts, and i KNOW i must not be the only one on this?

I thought he was the best thing about Troy.

I really couldn't disagree with you more. His acting in Chopper, Black Hawk Down, and Troy was very respectable. With the exception of Hulk, he has picked very good projects. Also, given the fact that excellent directors like Ridley Scott, Curtis Hanson, and Steven Spielberg want to work with him should tell you something.

I thought he was phenomenal in Chopper and impressive in subsequent projects. He doesn't get enough work in Hollywood.

His performance in Chopper is one of my favorites of this decade...

He single handedly MADE Troy for me.

RE:
Bana gave the best performance in Troy. A very good performance. He was AMAZING in Chopper. The script for Hulk didn't always serve him, but he was still at least adequate in that. (Personally I think he was very good).
People in Hollywood hire him, because they realize that he is a very talented actor with star potential. It's as simple as that. I agree with them.

Bana turned Troy from shit and into something fairly average. He blew Brad Pitt out of the water.
He was exellent in the Hulk as well.

He was very good in the vastly underrated Hulk. I didn't like Troy much at all, but he entertained me throughout(much better than Orlando Bloom, who everytime I saw on screen I wanted to choke him). I'm glad he keeps getting work. It keeps jobs away from guys like Orlando Bloom, and he's also very talented so that helps.

Well said. I agree completely.

I disagree with this thread quite a bit. I think he's improved every film he's acted in, and yes, saved Troy from being terrible. He was even decent in Hulk, if nothing else was.
He'll have a breakout role soon enough that will really give him high Hollywood status.

I'll have to disagree with you as well my friend. Bana may not be an amazing actor but I find him to be very consistent and actually improving somewhat. Although, he hasn't topped his performance in Chopper, which was great, I think he's doing very well. In Troy, he was one of the only people that actually seemed to be acting rather than posing for the cover of GQ. And Hulk wasn't great, but he did give a pretty solid performeance in that movie as well along with Black Hawk Down.
Now, the real question is how you could believe anyone is worse than Orlando Bloom at this point. He has no acting chops what so ever (was it just me or was there anyone else that watched Troy and was waiting for him to put back on the pointed ears recite lines from Lord Of the Rings?). So, I think this thread should be changed to ask why Orlando Bloom is getting work in Hollywood.

Ditto my man, he was a strong highlight, and would be the only reason to watch it again (along with Brian Cox).
I'm looking forward to his upcoming films, although the one with Spielberg probobly wont happen for a while (Indy 4 is" shooting in a year and a half" - SS, and the untitled Abe Lincoln project with Leam Neelson might be next).

I wouldn't subject myself to Troy, but what the hell was wrong with his work in the Hulk? Even for a summer blockbuster, he was a pretty well rounded character and a great physical actor.
I like him in Chopper too, I don't know what your problem is with the guy, but what am I gonna do.
Take just one acting class and you'll realize how much better actors you think are no good really are.

I haven't seen Chopper, but i doubt it's one of the best of the decade...
You seem to agree with me though, it's a shame he's fooled so many people into thinking he can act.

I don't think that's the case at all. I think it's pretty obvious when you see him onscreen that he's a talented individual.

And I agree with them too. To me, it's blatantly obvious that he's an extremely gifted actor. He was great in CHOPPER, the best thing about TROY (terrific acting there), arguably the best actor in BLACK HAWK DOWN, and definitely did a great job with what was given to him in HULK.
I'd keep hiring him too. He's a good looking guy, and he's talented as hell. He deserves the jobs he gets.

Bana was the shit in Chopper, and gave the best main performance in Troy.
In Hulk and Black Hawk Down, on the other hand...no. He's good until he tries to Americanize himself. That was not the only problem with his performance in Hulk, though, he just confused stoic with dull.

or maybe, just maybe he can actually act. I know that's a big maybe, but with me here.
I too thought he was the best thing in Troy. After seeing his great performance in Black Hawk Down I rented Chopper and was blown away. Eric Bana is a great "new" talent, and I'm glad Hollywood seems to be using more now.

Bashing Bana without seeing Chopper is about like bashing DeNiro having only seen Meet The Fokers.

No one is going to be liked by everyone. I'm sure Meryl Streep and Bobby De Niro have their detractors as well.

As an Australian who has seen most of his 'before-Hollywood' work, I can say that he has worked his arse off to get this far. From a semi-known comedian to widely known, he has come a long way. I hope he continues to wow and amaze us Australians further.

The better question is: Why am I seeing this thread on so many different websites?
He's hot and a good actor. Saying he's worse than Orlando Bloom is just wrong

Totally agree. And he is such a fantastic comedian (Ray Martin's hair has never looked better), I only hope he gets a chance to do a few projects that allow him to get into back-to-my-comedic-roots mode. And Chopper? Brilliant. (Cheers, Poiter.)
TROY - He had some good scenes in the film where his acting was strong, but for the majority of the film I thought his performance was laughable.
In the HULK he almost bored me to tears.
As for CHOPPER - Amazing performance. Can't say much more than that really.

I agree and I actually like Orlando Bloom. To me Bloom gets too much flack on these boards when I think he's a decent actor who chooses great movies.
But Bana is really fantastic. He was solid in Black Hawk Down but fantastic in Hulk and Troy. I liked Troy a LOT but he is the best thing about that movie.
I definately eagerly await his upcoming movies.

Bana is one of the best actors out there...period. He even out acted Pitt under the table and Pitt is one of my favorite actors.
