View Full Version : People who just can't believe you haven't seen a movie

My brother is a big culprit for doing this kind of thing.

You see, judging from my DVD collection one would probably think that I don't watch a variety of movies. I have little in the way of comedy or drama, but a hell of a lot in the way of horror. This doesn't mean that I don't like a bunch of different movies though.

Hell, some of my favorite movies include The Godfather I and II, Network, Office Space, Raging Bull, Forrest Gump...you know those kind of movies. I just haven't gotten around to buying them.

Now, my brother will often ask me something like, "Have you seen (for example) The Firm?" My answer is generally either "no" or "bits and pieces". His reaction is something to the effect of that I need to watch more than that "horror crap".

So finally I get tired of it. I don't care for the court dramas he watches and probably won't ever watch them. Finally, I ask him, "Well have you seen the Godfather? Or how about Goodfellas?" His answer is no of course, and finally I tell him to leave me alone about the movies I watch if he hasn't even seen those.

It just pisses me off. I can't stand it when people judge my taste in movies. I like the movies I like, and my DVD collection isn't exactly complete in terms of every movie I want on the shelf.

My best friend is also a culprit of this. He told me that I had a bad taste in movies, so being the person I am (that being someone who will attack back after being attacked) I kindly remind him of telling me in the 11th grade that his favorite movie OF ALL TIME was The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser (not that I dislike the movie or anything, but of all time?).

Arg. Just felt the need to get that out there.

Well this just goes to proove that no one really respects anyone(I'm sorry if that came out confusing). I mean everyone always seems to be questioning people's taste in films.

I do understand where you are coming from, Mr. Blonde. Half my collection of tapes and DVDS are horror. Admittedly, my favorite genre is horror and I probably tend to buy more horror DVD's. But, I still like Comedy, Drama, Action and the like. It just so happens that horror films are a big part of my life.

My brother isn't as much of a nuisance as the sound of yours, but at times he does question my tastes needlessly. You see, even though I watch my horror collection a little more often, I go the movies every week to see the new releases, whether its horror, comedy, drama, action, whatever, anything that looks good. I go the movies a little less now, becase I am on a budget.

My brother irks me on the fact that I haven't bothered to rent out or buy more non-horror movies. I can't see everything and can't see movies all the time, I'd go broke quick, give me a break. But, I am very knowledgable with movies, even if I haven't seen what is supposed to be a classic movie or a great Robert De Niro movie like Heat, I'll know what its about and who's in it.

I never understood why people gave a damn about what movies you've seen or haven't seen. Does it somehow affect them if you haven't seen such and such a movie?

Screw em.

I have to disagree with you. I was enthralled throughout.

I haven't seen The Firm. Have read the book though, and the book was very good. I was told the movie didn't compare so I didn't bother.

I am suprised at people who haven't seen Star Wars. That just shocks the hell out of me.

I, too, am a huge fan of horror, and am always on the prowl for the next great movie that will make me shit my draws, however, I don't limit the genres I indulge in. I am pretty picky tho, and instinctively tend to steer away from movies/shows that generate a lot of hype. I've found that 99.9% of the time that I follow the pack, I get disappointed, so I don't do it very often.

That being said, it took me 9 years to finally see ET the Extraterrestrial. Yep, 9 years after it was released. And guess what, it was good, but I don't regret the wait. I get so much crap from people when I tell them that I've never seen a full episode of "Friends" or "Frasier," or heaven forbid, the latest Tom Cruise movie.

Yeah, people that give people shit for not doing what everyone else is are definitely worth ranting about!

I don't listen to what other people say. Least of all my relatives. Although my brother and I both have very similar taste anyway. I guess I got lucky.

Just last week one of my coworkers asked me why I had no interest seeing some of her DVDs she bought, one which was A Cinderella Story. I think that would explain it all. She thinks I'm weird because as a woman, I don't like romantic comedies and chick flicks. Now, I like some dramas and comedies, but not ones that look like they've had Mrs. Butterworth's poured all over them. Give me exploding heads, psychos on the prowl, and cops going crazy.

I used to get that all the time at my last job: it's like people assume since I'm a chick and I'm in my 30's that I like artsy-fartsy films, romantic comedies, or 'chick flicks'. While I don't hate them, I prefer sci-fi, action and horror. (One way to look at it is this: think of just about any movie geared towards males from ages 15-25 that is testosterone-soaked. The more explosions, car chases, supernatural happenings, or space ships the better!) I would get all jazzed about a movie and they would look at me like I was nuts. (One in particular I remember is Blade II. I was SO STOKED for that movie!! Boy did I get crap for that!) Or they would come in after the weekend talking about whatever prissy film they had seen (like The English Patient) and would ask me "Did you see it?" So I'd ask them "Did anything blow up? Was anyone abducted by aliens? No? then of course not!"

Luckily at my new job I have co-workers who 'get' me. I even got my boss to watch Shaun Of The Dead. Now she walks around saying "You got red on you" all day. :D

Some are a little taken aback when I say I haven't seen a certain movie, but no one's really bashed the sort of movies I've seen in the meantime instead of them. I'll get around to BRAVEHEART eventually, it's just that HOLLA! IF I KILL YOU was more convenient to watch first.

Ditto.

I've seen a lot of movies in my life, and my friends know that, but if there is one movie that they've seen that I haven't, they freak out at me. It doesn't matter that much to me though, I still have a huge list of movies that I need to see...

Sister of my soul.

I've always hated chick flicks and romantic comedies.
I feel that Brad Pitt is a handsome man, but if he doesn't start to make sci.fi, I'm not going to watch him ever.
I made the mistake to watch part of Wind of Passion (that should have been called Wind of Jinx) and I wanted to suicide.
I like action movies, sci-fi and ACTION.
I did love The Chronicles of Riddick because it was sci-fi. it was big, it was loud and Vin Diesel just kept flying around shooting at everything and everyone moving.
I've always been regarded as the "strange one" for this but I don't care.
As regards relatives, I never agree with my sister, safe for a few movies, but the solution is not talking about movies and going on merrily this way.

I'm one of those peole that is kinda well rounded and has seen pretty much all the latest and most of known oldies as well as some foreign...most cult stuff... 8x out of 10 if someone asks me if I seen it I have.

On the other hand, I am ALSO one of those who gets incredulous when someone hasnt seen something that at (I) feel they should have. Now I aint talking about me asking someone if they ever seen Seventh Seal and act all hity toity when most of the time I know they'll say no, or wont even have heard of it....example of what recently blew my mind:

Soemone I know in their 30s made a comment a few holidays ago during the ..XMAS season... when they seen I had on the dvd of Its a Wonderful Life...they said they NEVER seen it..."gotta get around to it some day" he said...I said..well watch it with me..he said...naw, I aint crazy about B&W movies and besides theres a football game on...I said..dude..its xmastime, this is a seasonal classic..he said he'll pass...then went to watch his stupid ass football game... my mind is blown just recalling it. Call me prtentious...I think its insane to be in you 30s and never have seen that movie or even had passing interest in it! I know atheists who love this flick!

In my freshman year I had my religion teacher sit me down and tell me that maybe the reason I wasn't connecting with God like I should was because mostly all I watch is horror. She had the entire class make up a list of movies that were "motivational" and get me on the right track. My hairdresser does the same thing to me as well, as well as the fact that I don't watch black films. 9 times out of ten I go to the movies alone because no one is interested in what i like and then I have no one to tell about of great a movie is.

That's why you come here! You can be who you are; like what you like - and no one will judge you...

... Besides, I sincerely doubt that God really cares what movies you watch. It's kinda trivial in the grand scheme of things... But that's just me...

I haven't seen...

Star Wars
The Lord of the Rings
The Godfather

And I don't give a shit. The only downside to this is that I can't go to the local coffeehouse because it's full of pretentious people in their late '20s/early '30s who talk about Star Wars and LOTR ad infinitum (oh, and Dungeons and Dragons). That's not such a bad downside. I appreciate all genres, but 90-95% of my video/DVD collection is horror. My room looks like a miniature haunted house attraction. I'm happy in my own little world, and that's all that matters. So be happy in your own little world.

The Firm is a great flick. It isnt really a court movie, there is no court case and no time spent in a court room. It is a thriller.

Having said that, your brother needs a punch in the throat.

i second shaydes opinion on the punch to the throat, but just to add to the the "whatever" i once worked with a guy who was like this, he asked me if ever saw movies like "interview with a vampire" or "mulholland drive" and whenver i said no he acted like i told him i raped small children and ate babies, i hate when people do shit like that

One holiday, some of my pretentious fucking relatives were in from out of town, and the convo' started on movies.... I asked them if they watched Everybody Loves Raymond...the reply was an air of indignancy..."we dont watch "TV" in our home, we read books".....so, knowing they wanted me to take the bait and ask what books, I figured fuck em, and instead said, oh, I bet thats stimulating.....so what movies have ya watched lately? They said, well we rarely go to the show and even rent movies, but we are currently enjoying the "Cirque de Solei series"...and we tell everyone we know to watch the movie "Chocolat"... when they asked for the gravy to be passed, I had all I can do to keep from throwing the entire fucking bowl of steaming giblet gravy at them... now, I havent seen Chocolat and could give a rats ass about it...I have seen a few CDS's and they were like.."eh"...not bad, but after about 30 minutes I see it repeating itself and cant fucking believe there's like sequels to that shit.... the best thing I can say about it is when those skinny chicks bend over in those tights, i can see their hot little camel toes bursting thru their crotches. :D

Tell me about it. I have a coworker who's like that. He's this major film buff/film student, which I am as well. But, since he has a lot of free time on his hands, he gets to see a lot more movies than I do. So everytime he mentions a movie I haven't seen, he freaks out on me. It gets on my nerves, especially since not a day goes by that he doesn't say the word 'oscar.' Because of him, I didn't watch any oscar movies, or even bother to watch the oscars. Sheesh! I'll be glad when I leave and I'll be the ultimate film expert again.:D
