View Full Version : Chris Rock: Oscars a fashion show only watched by homosexuals

Oscar bosses are standing behind Chris Rock as their choice to host this year's 77th Annual Academy Awards ceremony - despite the comedian calling the event a "fashion show" that is only watched by homosexuals. Head Of State star Rock made his controversial remarks to US magazine Entertainment Weekly, just two weeks before he presents the glitzy bash later this month. In the interview, Rock told the publication that Oscar ceremonies never hold his concentration for the duration, before deriding the annual event as "idiotic" and a pointless fashion parade. Rock said, "I never watched the Oscars, except the Halle Berry / Denzel Washington year. But even then, I went back and forth to other channels. Come on, it's a fashion show. No one performs, it's not like a music show. Nothing against people who aren't straight, but what straight guy that you know really cares? Who gives a f**k? They're clothes. What straight black man sits there and watches the Oscars? Show me one. And they don't recognize comedy, and you don't see a lot of black people nominated, so why should I watch it?" But Oscar producer Gil Cates yesterday dismissed reports that Rock's comments had offended anyone at the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences. He said, "The Academy is excited about Chris Rock hosting this year's Oscar telecast and looking forward to a very funny evening with him. Chris's comments over the past few weeks are meant to be humorous digs at the show that some people, obviously including Chris himself, think may be a bit too stuffy."

He's black. He is allowed to say whatever he wants. As a white person I would be forced to "resign" my job as the oscars host if I said this. If I said nigger I also would get the boot. But it is a good thing that every minority can do whatever they want, but I have to watch my mouth every time I open it.

And don't you forget it you cracker! :-)
I noticed he didn't say that he watched the Oscars when Whoopi Goldberg hosted. I guess in terms of inducing nausea, Whoopi breaks thru all color barriers. Well good for her.

Heh. He's entitled to his opinion. And it's not like it's wrong -- the show is more of a "who wears what" and "see and be seen" thing that anything else.
But still, I'm a straight man, and I watch it. So either he's wrong, or I should rethink some things.

I am not saying he isn't entitled to his opinion. It's just if I expressed the opinion he did I would probably lose my job.

That's hilarious.
Not what he said. But the way words have been carefully extracted to seem like he made a blanket offensive statement, rather than a joke. Bravo.

For me, it wasn't the "gay" remarks that struck me, it was the "and you don't see a lot of black people nominated", comment. Okay then... and what the fuck does that really mean? He "only watched the Haley/Denzel" year, cause everyone knew it was a token year anyway. As for the not enough blacks.... uhm... 2 or 5 for best actor... ain't that bad really. And they got the noms cause they were GOOD, not some affirmative action bullshit.
I don't watch the NAACP awards, cause they don't nominate enough "white" people... there.... :p
I think it's simply out of context jokes, tossed out to add more "pop" or "buzz" to the affair. And yea, I agree with Rock on one thing... it's nothing but a fucking fashion show. The next day you get a really quick, "Here are the winners" followed by 10 minutes of what designer was being worn.
I think ALL awards shows are nothing more than masterbatory affairs, to see who's gonna suck who's dick the hardest. If the only reason you get into the "biz", is to have your dick sucked by the industry and handed a naked golden man, then... wait, that does sound gay doesn't it.
I watch every year, mostly cause I love to yell at the TV, in all it's stupidity, but partially cause I LOVE to yell at the TV, in all it's PC bullshit glory.

Just what the show needs. Controversy.
People might actually watch now.

I'm still wondering what the fuck this has to do with anything, other than you finding a covert way to insult black people.

call me crazy... but i def didnt see any dig/ insult at black people in Nikon's comment! I actually agree with what he said.. whats ok for some people to say, ,is not ok for others... its the truth, it shouldnt be but it is!
As for the Chris Rock thing... the credit was given to IMDB.com... and it was taken from ENtertainment Weekly.. it is quite obvious those comments were taken out of context!

It's an article about Chris Rock making fun of the oscars, and suddenly it becomes a "ohhh the poor white man is oppressed by political correctness". Shit, I'm surprised there wasn't an affirmative action comment thrown in.

You're right, I should have thrown in a affirmative action joke. Anyway...yes I know this quote was taken out of context. But you took my quote out of context. My post wasen't about black people as much as it was about me as a white person not being able to say anything I want, no matter whether or not it's true. Clearly you have proven my point.

In light of Chris Rocks comments, and his viewpoint on what type of person watches this show... I find myself compelled to ask Chris Rock.... "What straight black man would agree to host a show that he claims is watched primarily by homosexuals" ????
His comedy has been wearing thin over the last few years and when I heard he was hosting, I was underwhelmed..... is anyone else gonna admit that whats on their mind is how many racial cracks we're gonna have to sit thru, as well as some stabs at not enough Black people winning Oscars? I'll go first... I AM. :(
Anyone recall when Eddie Murphy hosted and pulled the same shit about Black people?
Give me the days when Johnny Carson hosted..damn..even Conan kicked ass a few years back...it was the Oscars he hosted right? He was funny as hell....Steve Martin.... fucking WAYNE BRADY..any other black person but Chris Rock...Denzel...Morgan Freeman...Will Smith...c'mon...Bill Cosby...he can have all his ho's on stage with him while he tells others how to live their lives... :D

What! You think we are going to hear jokes about white people!? Next thing your going to tell me is that Denzel Washington and Halle Berry only won best actor/actress because Sidney Poitier gave a speech about black people not winning enough! You are just unreal!

I do think the Oscars copped out that year. They both won for the wrong reasons.
Denzel had a great performance but Crowe(as much as i hate the guy) had it in the bag, and dont even get me started on Halle.

Agreed. Maybe it's because they can't change him two weeks before the show. Maybe they're afraid that if they do, they'll get al the "they fired a black man" talk. But it's true -- if anyone in a normal job insulted the hand that paid them, their ass'd be out.
The Academy got what it paid for. Chris Rock simply lives up to his reputation here. His act really hasn't changed for the show. Remember the MTV Awards about 8 years ago? He was busy shelling every star in the audience. And he actually was pretty funny.
I agree that the Oscars have become a dumb fashion show, but I disagree with the viewing audience. Movie fans are die-hards. Even if Rock has a point, he doesn't need to alienate an entire audience. Besides...Jamie Foxx could be walking home with two statues. Then how many straight black men do you think will watch??

Agreed. I'm beginning to hear that his statements have been spun to get ratings. I, for one, really am not planning on watching the Oscars anyway this year because I don't think that there are going to be any surprises.
Chris Rock seems like an intelligent, funny guy. He's worked long and hard to get to where he is. I seriously doubt that he'd be so stupid as to make (and mean) jabs like this.

I don't understand why the Academy allows "insult humor", just show the films and winners and eliminate the comic entirely.

Actually, fellow Schmoe ArtoJ just gave me this link...
Actual Full Interview (http://www.moviecitynews.com/Notepad/2005/050217_npd.html)
You'll see that the phrase about "straight men" concerns clothes and fashion, and not the Oscars, and was actually the answer to ANOTHER question. Someone just took that quote, squeezed it in with the answer of the previous question, and ta-da!, looks like Rock is bashing the Oscars and calling it a homosexual party.
And that fooled us all (and me the first). Ah, the power of the press...

Chris Rock knows exactly what to say in leading up to any kind of engagement, to make himself controversial, I like Chris Rock, he is one smart motherfucker.

I believe Chris Rock's comedy can be summed up with this (http://www.sumiarasu.com/imageboard/src/1108819641943.swf) flash loop.

Oh, that's funny. My sides are hurting here.
Tell me, do you look for these yourself, or do you feel you have an obligation to link to every website forwarded to you?
There's a marked difference between RACIST humor and RACIAL humor. Learn it.

Chris Rock is a genius. His comedy is not limited to "white" jokes like most black comedians. People copy him and other Super Stars just like white comedians copy Lenny Bruce, George Carlin and Jerry Seinfeld. As far as black comedians are concerned: Red Foxx-Richard Pryor-Eddie Murphy-Chris Rock. I'm not ranking them, I'm just showing their progression in the different generations.
As for the Oscars, I watch the show because I love movies. I do flip back and forth between channels though, maybe I'll watch the whole thing now, just to see what Rock has to say.
Alrato!
PS. Brown people make fun of white people because...well...white people are funny!

You miss my point. Chris Rock shows the differences with whites and blacks in his acts. Other than going into the whole race thing he's a really good comic. I just hate the comics who go on stage and are all "white people this black people that." It's annoying and unfunny. Just like that link I showed(which was not forwarded to me, I just thought it would show my point-annoying and stupid). Racial and Racist humour was funny for a time, now it's just bland and overused. Chris Rock has to stop with the racial humour and start showing the true potential he has. Bigger and Blacker is a hilarious concert, and the racial humour wasn't as blatant as some of his other sets.

Whenever I look at an article in the IMDb regarding who said what, I only look at the quotes. Seriously, it's much easier to tell if the media is manipulating the words that way and half of the time, they are, as in this case.
Looking at that Chris Rock interview though, one thing did catch my eye:
"Let's talk about your take on movies. Do you think they're better or worse than they used to be?
Definitely worse. Studios used to make visions. When a director has control, what you're seeing on the screen is a vision. Now what you see is a consensus. There's a big difference. Sideways is a vision. The Day After Tomorrow is a consensus. It's 30 people agreeing."
Beneath all the profanity and joking aside, this guy has some pretty articulate thoughts.
