I've seen a few, although I'm sure there's many out there I've yet to watch. My favorite of the ones I've seen is Apocalypse Now.
What about you?

Without any hesitation I'd say Full Metal Jacket - 10/10:

I've yet to see FMJ. I'd say Platoon is a good contender; it's on my TV right now.

I like all those films, but "Hanoi Hilton" is my personal favourite.

Every Vietnam vet I talk to, including my father-in-law says that The Deer Hunter is the most realistic movie ever made about the war. That has to count for something.
My money is on Full Metal Jacket. Easily the most entertaining of the bunch.

Platoon is often lauded on the same score.
Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, The Deer Hunter, Coming Home (if you want to stretch the parameters a bit)...all well regarded classics.
I always like to mention a small film called 84 Charlie MoPic in these discussions. Worth seeking out.

While I think that Apocalypse Now was very well done, I think that We Were Soldiers has to be my favorite.

My favs are Hamburger Hill, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, We Were Soldiers, and Casualties of War.
I will say though, that We Were Soldiers and Platoon I liked more for entertainment value. We Were Soldiers especially was not very accurate, but pretty well done for Hollywood.

The Deer Hunter, Platoon, Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket . . . .
they're all remarkable films.
But my personal favorite is BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY.
I know most of the film we the audience are not in the shit, but I believe this film does a remakable job at displaying the after-effects of war.

Apocalypse Now is the best, but The Deer Hunter isn't far behind in my mind.

From the ones I've seen, I'd have to say either Full Metal Jacket or Apocalypse Now

They're all so different. I love them all, but I'd say PLATOON.

One movie that hasn't been mentioned is Tigerland. I love that movie!
But my favorite has to be Forrest Gump. That movie has scenes that are in the Vietnam so I think that counts.
But Platoon and Born on the Fourth of July are extraordinary films too!

Apocalypse Now!
You propably gonna kill me for this... but I think that Deer Hunter was booooring. Only good scene was that Russian rulette scene. Otherwise it got Oscars only 'cos it had a marvellous epic soundtrack with 10 minutes of symbolic deer hunting...
-maybe I just don't get it-

The only thing that pissed me off about The Deer Hunter was...those aren't actual deer, they're elk.
/actually IS a deer hunter

Apocalypse Now, Platoon and Full Metal Jacket are all excellent but my favourite would have to be We Were Soldiers

Agreed-- while I dug the film, some scenes go on for way too long. Of course, when they get to Nam the film is fantatsic.
And while I love Apocalypse Now for what it is, it tends to stray too far into the realm of bullshit for me to vote it as my favorite Nam movie. It is an excellent descent into madness though....
and horror.....

Gotta go with Platoon, but I confess I've never seen Full Metal Jacket. Apocalypse Now (Redux) is a close second.

Apocolypse Now is defentley the best one. Its the only movie mention that shows how it was like being in a PT boat during the war. Thats why its my favorite.

The Deer Hunter
I just...love this movie.
"APOCALYPSE NOW is Vietnam"
You're more than entitled to that opinion, but 90% of Vietnam vets disagree with you. Good movie, but not realistic of how it was.
"Every Vietnam vet I talk to, including my father-in-law says that The Deer Hunter is the most realistic movie ever made about the war. That has to count for something."
I think it counts for the most, if we're talking THE Vietnam movie. I would agree with you, but there was an HBO film called A BRIGHT SHINING LIE that every Vietnam vet that I know that has seen it have called EASILY the most realistic about how the war really was and what it was about.

I think it depends on the vets experience in vietnam to determine whats the most accurate description. I think a Green Beret would somewhat relate to Cononel Kurtz training the Cambodians to be guerialla fighters in Apocolypse Now, because thats what they did. I don't think any medium can depict a war perfectly to the point everyone would agree thats how it was.

I totally agree. I hope I didn't sound like I was saying BRIGHT SHINING LIE was the definitive film, all I was saying is that those I know who have aseen it and served said it was. As you said, everyone's experience was different, so there will never be a concensus. The only thing they would agree in is that a film can't capture what is was really like.
